magnificent cave of sculpture
Jul 2020
This is really amazing cave I ever seen in my life. So many mysteries inside the cave and with the sculptures. I was alone to get English guided tour and it was awesome. The sculptures really fascinate me. Tour was very very informative and details. Unfortunately sculptures are decaying due to weather condition. So, I will suggest everyone to visit as soon as possible before it gets worse. I hope there will be a way to preserve this beautiful sculpture cave. I really loved it.

Small but interesting
Aug 2018 • Family
The cave where the sculptures is located is quite small but still extremely fascinating since the sculptures have different stories and/or theories. The tour guide was extremely friendly and passionate about the sculptures which makes it way more interesting. The tour guide spoke at least French and German and had books with explanations in other languages such as Dutch. There was a small parking lot available next to the cave. The prices are very reasonable and include a tour. I would really recommend it although I normally dislike Museums I found it very interesting. The only unfortunate part of the museum is that they don't have a large budget for restoration so some of the sculptures are slowly decaying. (The tour guide has dedicated his life to the museum from a young age)

Small, weird, fascinating

So somebody, a loooong time ago (circa 1560) carved figures in the rock inside a secret cave, and those figures are erotic, and religious, and satirical, and plain mysterious.
And Laurent, the man who shows you the place is full of stories, full of theories, and full of mischievous fun !
Go, Laurent go ! : -)

Fascinating

The area where the sculptures are in is small, only one room but so fascinating. Take your time and look at each sculpture in detail then go round again as there is bound to be something you have missed. The sculptures are really good and detailed but its the story behind them that is so interesting. The lengths that the villagers went to to keep them hidden, ingenious. Such an unusual place to visit.

Part of our troglodyte day, very nice. Though small very fascinating and worth seeing, can see a video in French if you want too, and some rescued heads in that room. Reasonable price.

Watch this space?
May 2014 • Couples
If you blink, you'll miss the signs to this hidden gem as you drive through the village, even if you're looking for it. The entrance is up a narrow road off the main road through Deneze-sous-Doue, but well worth the detour.
We were lucky enough to be given a tour with only one other couple, who were French, but we were soon communicating, me with my somewhat stilting French. The pleasant young lady who took us tried hard to explain in both languages, but clearly we missed out somewhat, because her commentary took a lot longer in French than it did in English.
In our old guidebook, the caves were said to be thought to be from a sect with strange practices. This, of course is not true, and the sculptures actually were now believed to be carved out by protestants, in a time when it was counted as treason and heresy to be anything but Roman Catholic, hence the satirical and naughty substitution of the King, Queen and his mistress, for Jesus, Mary and Joseph. More research is being done, and it is thought that there are many more caves in the area, so a question of 'watch this space'.

Our visit to these caves was spontaneous, but most enlightening as we entered the small rooms and saw the many sculptures carved into the walls. Our guide spoke excellent English and was passionate about the restoration and importance of this site for future generations. We learned a great deal about the town, its history and these caves. It is truly worth the visit.

Troglodyte satirical sculptures
Jul 2013 • Friends
During the times in France of Catherine de Medici, Protestants were persecuted and hid in caves. The sculptures are satirical and well-worth seeing. The cave is small so the visit doesn't take long. The young lady who works there speaks very good English, is so enthusiastic and is trying to get the place on the tourist map.
The cave is down some stairs so not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. There is a small car park
