On this (our first) visit to “Caballos de la Ribera,” we were greeted warmly by a dozen or so cats that live on the farm run by owners Toñi and Jose. Jose is originally from Madrid and Toñi hails from nearby Salamanca, though she’s lived both in the UK and the USA. This is their 17th year running “Caballos de la Ribera”, a small, family-run enterprise, and it is clearly a labor of love for this no-nonsense, hard-working, salt-of-the-earth couple. Our party ranged in both age and level of horse riding skill (with a mix of both kids and adults, as well as those with moderate riding experience and those with none whatsoever). They adapted to the needs of our group with no problem. The youngest child rode on the same horse as one of the adults (sitting on a kid’s saddle), while a slightly older child rode alone on a horse (but the horse was pulled by Toñi). Toñi was especially helpful with the kids, teaching them proper behavior around horses and basic riding techniques. The ride itself was lovely. It was a guided ride that took us from their farm, along the wooded river bank, past the river beach, into the town of Huerta and back again. The spring foliage was thick, and we could hear a variety of birds along the way, though the easiest to spot were the ducks fishing on the river. On the way, we encountered a group of cyclists, some walkers and (in town) a couple of cars. In each instance, Toñi and Jose stopped our group, allowing the other party to pass, and always doing so in a polite, friendly way. Back on the farm once our ride had concluded, we were lucky to spend some time visiting the stables, where Toñi and Jose introduced us to their other horses (they have about a dozen and a half total). Jose then excused himself to go trim a few overgrown tree branches we encountered along the route. The farm cats were ubiquitous, and were almost as popular with the kids as the horses themselves. All in all, it was a wonderful experience – 100% recommendable. There is no doubt we will be back soon. Finally, here are a few additional tips you may want to consider: They don't accept credit cards at this time, so be sure to bring cash (and feel free to tip, of course!) During the warmer months, I would recommend booking an early morning ride or afternoon ride, to avoid the hottest time of day (with the high noon sun and the humidity of the nearby river). Ask to meet the other horses! If there is another reservation right after yours, they may not be able to accommodate your request. But in our case, we were able to see the stables, visit the rest of the horses and have a little extra time with the farm cats.

My family and I visited this wonderful place twice in the same week. We were so impressed and delighted with the experience, we simply had to do it again! The instructions are clearly provided in both Spanish and English and provided with some time to get to know the horse and what to do before venturing out. This excursion is so reasonable priced and they are very accommodating with numbers (we had 9 people!). Easy to contact too. There is a choice of two excursions- an hour and half or 2 hours with a picnic. We chose the hour and half and the time flew past- completely full of fun! Would definitely go again when back in the area!

While I was a summer student at the University of Salamanca, I tried in vain to ride with this outfit. Toñi, the head man, was quick to responde to emails, but make sure you verify and nail down full details from him before you go. We had arranged that he would pick me up the Casa Lis Museum to go for the ride with two other riders. The day before I looked for the museum and locals (including police) took me to the Casa Lis entrance. The next day, after a 45-minute wait at the entrance to the museum (a logical place to wait in the absence of any further detail), Toñi never showed up. I emailed him asking what happened. He said he came at the agreed time AT THE BACK OF THE MUSEUM which is near a street where a bus came by. Toñi never mentioned (1) that he wanted me at the back of the museum, (2) never mentioned that it should be on the street where a bus came by, and (3) had the temerity to tell me it was my fault and that I was just SOL. Apparently, if you can get this guy to be clear about where to meet him, the ride is OK. I will never know, for two reasons: (a) he never accepted his responsibility for screwing up and (b) refused to give me another opening, even though I was there for two more weeks. Oh yeah, one more thing: there is a minimum of four riders before they lift a finger. And they expect you to get the other riders! TOTAL LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM.

My friend and I had the absolute best time on this excursion....probably our favorite activity in Spain! The couple that runs this is beyond nice and they pick you up and drop you off in downtown Salamanca. It was just my friend and I on the tour this day and it was so personalized. The ride itself was gorgeous and so fun to go through the river, and then the picnic was perfect! Jose told us all about the history of Salamanca and Spain and we had so much fun talking with him!! (He only speaks Spanish, so that would be a plus for you if you do too!) The were so accommodating and if I am ever back in Salamanca I will be going back here again!!!

My friend and I decided we would like to do something outdoors in Salamanca and chose the 2-3 hour ride with a picnic at Caballos de la Ribera - it was the perfect choice! I am a fairly experienced rider and my friend had little to no experience, we both had great time despite our different levels. Toñi and Juan provided excellent service (pick up and drop off from town) and instructions. The horses are beautiful, obviously well cared for and very well behaved, The ride takes you through scenic farmland and forest across many (very safe) river crossings. When you stop for lunch there is an opportunity to swim in a beautiful and tranquil part of the river - after your swim you will enjoy a typical Spanish lunch of fresh bread, cheese, chorizo, salami and wine... delicious! We absolutely loved our time! (Also, if you are an animal lover like myself there may be a few barn kittens hanging around for a cuddled - added bonus!)
