Really great little beach town. Lots of great restaurants. Easy beach access and everything within a short walk. They have roll boats that take you to and from the beach. Lots of options for food at the beach and in town. It’s a 45 minute drive from Santarem. Lots of hotels and rentals in town. Great place to visit and a must see.

We stayed in Alter Do Chao for a week and wished we'd stayed longer. We'll definately go back some day. Fantastic beaches, warm water and great people. The music in the square at night and the restaurants were excellent. We even danced the local Carimbo!!

While we were in the square we met a guide called Ohad. He was brilliant. He took us upriver to the national forest and we spent a whole day exploring the lake ad river and hidden beaches with him too. His knowledge of the area was excellent and his English was good too. Later in the week, he invited us to his place for lunch and we stayed to watch the spectacular sunset over the river. Next time we plan to rent from him and see that view every night!

Excellent guide and host who made our visit extra special. Nothing was too much for him - he was always super helpful and polite.

His number is below for anyone who wants to have the same experience we did - wonderful!

While on an Amazon river cruise, we (6 adults) independently booked a guided tour with Gil Serique. This was our second time using Gil (we also booked him when in Santarem on same cruise). He lives in the area, is aware of the local sights to see, is extremely knowledgeable of area wildlife. Gil is very personable, eager to share his knowledge and his ecological concerns. He will fit the tour to your time lines and your interests, and if the tour is long, he will feed you as you travel. We had opportunity to climb a 14 story tower to view the forest canopy and we drove through (actually walked the streets of) the city of Belterra built by Ford in his failed attempt to set up a rubber factory. We would highly recommend him for his enthusiasm, knowledge and his ability to give you a feel for his country. His english was easily understood, he loves to tell you stories of the area and he is both charming and well read. He is quick to respond to requests through his web site.

Arriving to Alter do Chao and roaming around with no purpose whatsoever I stumbled upon Gil´s place and decided to ask him about the tours he offers. Being a backpacker as I am and running out of money in my seventh month of traveling I was looking for the cheapest option. Gil offered me a discount, an enlightening chat on environmentalist issues and a lunch to share. Straight away I was sure that this was the place to choose) I was not deceived. Next day Gil took me to a place most tourists rarely get a chance to see, introduced me to local people and showed lots of animals in a flooded forest. Gil is that excentric kind of person who can talk on all kinds of subjects making your stay really special. If when traveling you are looking for a unique experience, getting to know people and meeting excentric characters, Gil is the person to turn to. It´s something that you call off the beaten track and gives you a lot of things to remember later. You will have a lot of fun, guaranteed) In my opinion, the best place to look for your Amazon jungle tour.

A must not only for nature-lovers, especially in low season, to start next week, where way fewer people come over.
There are string rumours in the city that Asians have bought the area around the city to build a resort, so go see the place quickly!

Last year I had a chance to work on a brief documentary for a cool German producer which created the opportunity for taking a closer look at Saire Festival, a folk-religious...event that takes place at Alter doc chao in SeptemberI must say I had always neglected it since i dont like crowds much.
Despite the fact that the village gets a bit packed it is really nice to participate in moments that involve the real idea of the event.

If you like me, avoid the week ends, far too much people, amazing girls in tiny bikinis though. For most, the central of it is the colourful and enthusiastic presentation of the two "rival" dolphins. I would go for it!

Amazing setting!!!! You forget you are sitting smack bang in the middle of a river so wide you cant even see the sides!!! You think you are in the sea because of the beautiful beaches!!! Very Very little english here so brush up on your portuguese!! or be prepared for pointing and sign language!! :-) The people are amazing as is this little village - very quaint and homely!!! We stayed in hotel for part of trip and a pousada for the other part as we decided to stay longer!!! The food is delicious here!!! I found it to be very very safe with kids out in the streets playing by themselves - lovely lovely place!! Just another world!! A tip would be to take cash as sometimes due to the location - hotel visa machines can play up - as can the internet!!! The lightning here is SPECTACULAR!!! Like you would see is photos - think its like that the closer you are to the equator!! CRACKED right across the whole sky - first time it happened i thought it was guns and ran!!! A local girl saw me and came and took me and pointed to the sky!!! This went on for endless nights!! AMAZING!!! YOu could see planes flying through it!!! AND we actually flew through it en route to Brasillia!!! I was pertrified beforehand but once up and flying through it - it was UNBELIEVABLE!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!! That is one sight that will always stay with me!!! Anyway dosent really matter where you stay here as everything is bare minimum and basic but with all the homely touches of the people!! A wonderful experience!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Thank you the People of Alter do Chao for you hospitality!!! Hope to see you again one day!! xxx

We walked to the beach from our cruise ship early on the morning of the docking and the locals were already coming to the beach for the day. Very nice looking area with several boats just off the beach. Downtown is just a block away and lots of locals were seen going to an from downtown with their families. We were impressed by the town's cleanliness and the constant sweeping and cleaning that we saw taking place.

Alter do Chao, “alter of the church”, in Portuguese, because of the shape of the overlooking hill, is 20 km from downtown Santarem. It has spectacular white sand beaches with clear blue water that rivals some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. It is hard to believe that you are in afresh water river!

It is accessible by road or boat from Santarem, the former being the most cost effective and time efficient. Be aware that Brazilians refer to Reals as “dollars” and in tourist areas it can be quite confusing if the price is US dollars that are worth 2.2 times more or Brazilian “dollars.” When negotiating it is best to confirm that Reals is the number quoted or just produce reals and the vender will correct you if they were quoting in US$. We found that on the street venders would use two for one exchange when the official rate was 2.2 so using Reals saved 10%.

There are bars and restaurants on the mainland side of the beach but the most popular are situated on a sandspit bordering the lagoon. It is possible to wade most of the day when the river is low during the dry season (June to November) but there is a fleet of row boats that will ferry you across for a fee.

Be aware there are several young men whom speak English that will arrange the ride for you but you will end up paying more to cover their commission! Typically the fee is 2 Real with the boatman and 4 Real with the agent one way.

Alto do Chao caters mostly to locals so restaurant prices are very reasonable, we had two 24oz beer and a can of coke for 18 Real (US$ 8.50) on the beach listening to samba music.

We also arranged a boat trip for 6 adults to the lagoon that is free of development. The trip lasted over an hour and cost 120 Real (US$ 55). We saw wild life mainly birds but avoided the dense jungle where the jaguars roam. We chartered the “Veroboto”, the captain was a very nice man whom spoke no English but I would recommend using him - see picture.

The town of Santarem is safe to wander but there are few attractions there of major significance for tourists. I would suggest spending most of your time there at spectacular Alter do Chao, and consider a stop to see the animals at Zoofit for an hour. Zoofit is on the main road to the beach.

I went to this small town just 20 kilometers from Santarem, Brazil where I was visiting my in laws for Christmas. I thought "a beach on a river, that can't be too exciting". When I arrived there my preconceived notions were changed. Such a beautiful little relaxed town filled with interesting shops featuring crats from local artists. Just the pleasent walk up and down the narrow streets would have been enough but then the I discovered the beach. Perfect sand where the warm water even at the lowest level offers such a refreshing relief from th heat of the city. While there are waling vendors, they seemed much more respectful of your privacy than in other destinations. I spent hours relaxing on the beach then bobbing in the water, from which I could have a cold beer delivered to my spot or fresh hot seafood waiting when I came out again. I simply loved it!. It is well worth the stop if you are ver in that part of the state of Para in Brazil.
