Very Nice but not the Bahamas

The beach is very nice and pleasant. Bring your sun screen. It is a very earthy feel and not at all like the bahamas or Caribbean but worth the trip.

Alter do Chao is a secret gem. I never imagined it until some friends took me there while I was visiting Santarem. Wide expanses of sandy beaches during low water season. It's peaceful and quite amazing.

Great unpretentious Tapajos River Beach resort town without the annoying five, four and three-star hotels and their often snotty patrons. And everything is within walking distance. I will go back again.

Alter do Chao We were now in the Amazon tributary, the Rio Tapajos. We arrived at 7.00 am and tendering began at 8.00 am. This is within the administrative district of Santarem, and we were fortunate we had not arrived on a weekend, as it is then packed with visitors from there. It is situated on the right bank of... During the dry season when the Amazon is low, it recedes revealing a wide, clean beach. The water is clear and warm, great place to relax.

Spent 4 days in Alter. The beach is a paradise. The river water is clean and warm. The sand very fine and delicious to walk on. Highly recommended, but not on weekends when it is packed. The kiosks sell delicious finger food. The main square is nice, with many stands selling sweets.

this remarkable beach lies at the Tapajós river, which at north goes to the Amazonas. quite close to Santarém (remember, for us 200km is "quite close). meat the amazon turtles protection area - the biggest in the world. enjoy always warm water with no piranhas, crocodiles or similar, and make night tours to see what would frighten you by day.... It is a combination of warm water, no waves, white smooth sand, green nature, river and a lot of island to visit. When you get there, take a "Catraia" or small boach to get in the Love Island, just in front of the city and it takes only three minutes. Take your seat, order a very freeze beer, feets in... More

Great place. I arrived at a weekend and I was quite surprised there were quite a few people there. Mostly brazilians coming for the weekend. I paid a guy in a speed boat take me around for a couple of hours and turned out it ended up most part of the day which was great. We stopped off at another... More

I took a series of boats down the entire length of the Amazonas. The boat from Manaus stopped in Santarem at 10pm and a group of four (a German couple, a Frenchman and myself hopped into a taxi and went to Alter do Chao. I spent 4 days there before taking the boat to Belem. Alter do Chao, the beach,... More
