Relaxing day on an Amazon river beach
Jan 2020
Tendered directly onto the beach from our cruise ship. Great to swim in the Amazon river - warm, calm and fresh water! There was a great little market across the bridge and a small cafe where we had a beer. We didn't walk through the town to the other beach as it was far too hot. We could have taken a local boat trip to the lake but were quite happy to sit under the shade of the trees on the beach in between swims. Wonderful day!

White sand and friendly locals
Dec 2019
Aneasy walk from the where the cruise ship tenders dock to "downtown and the beach". Note the quotation makke. Beer is cold and $3 U.S./liter...My favorite is ANTARTIC!! Beach is white sand with refreashing water!

It was a great location to be around other tourists and locals. My agenda was to have a drink and to enjoy the atmosphere.

Best excursion on the Amazon River with Gil Serique!
Mar 2019 • Friends
I took an excursion into the Amazonian rainforest while visiting Brazil. Gil Serique met the Veendam, a Holland America ship, at Santarem.

A large number of passengers boarded Gil's vessel and we headed into the rainforest. A brief squall passed overhead while Gil shared both local and his personal history. His grandfather first came to Brazil from Morocco, making a life for himself and his family. Gil took personal interest passenger comforts as the vessel went ever deeper into the thick jungle. At one point, Gil stopped, inviting passengers into speedboats. This remains the most memorable part of the trip, as the small boat made its way through thick, nearly impenetrable, trees, vines and growth. This forested growth emerges many feet from the waters. The speedboats driver pointed out birds and wildlife high above us.

The speedboat then made its way to wider passageways as the broad expanse of this enormous waterway became clear. After returning to the larger ship, Gil set out an amazing array of nuts and fruit, all native to the Amazonian River.

Thus trip remains the highlight of my 50-day voyage aboard the Veendam. My only regret was that I did not have a recording device and telephoto lens while on this fantastic excursion.

I immensely enjoyed this trip, and hope to again join Gil on a similar excursion to explore the secrets of the Amazon River. This is an unqualified 2 thumbs up for Gil and his outstanding excursions in this part of the world."

Beach was under water in March
Mar 2019 • Couples
When our cruise ship stopped here in March, the beaches were under water, so no beach. So, we took a river tour to the areas east of town.

An Amazing and beautiful village on the Tapajos river
Mar 2019 • Couples
A great place to relax or use as a start point to venture out to the numerous isolated, but beautiful beaches and rain forest that are in abundance here.

Three ladies on a beach..
Apr 2018 • Business
My husband attended a business meeting in Santarem and I went with another spouse and daughter to this picturesque beach. The multicolored boats were pretty, the sand fine and light but there were many tiny stinging insects.
I strongly recommend long sleeves and a thick blanket or towel to rest on the beach.
It was a beautiful evening and my camera caught got plenty of opportunity.
The many bars in the village were simple and hospitable. The beach huts are closed this time of year.

Bedroom town of santerem
Dec 2018 • Couples
Part of an stop from our cruise, no organized activities, just went by tender and visited he small town, nice beach, pretty poor, not much too see beside walking around the square and visit the little church, beach is nice .
Saw the biggest cricket, I thought it was a bird Firth’s, bright green, pretty but freaky when it comes right at you, I am not into bugs
Beats me why you would want to stop there unless you live in Santerem and want to spend day at the beach

The Caribbean of the Amazon?
Nov 2018 • Couples
if you had been dropped on Alter do Chao's beach without knowing where you were, you might not immediately think that you are about 500km up the river Amazon. The water is crystalline and warm, the sand is white and the pleasure boats and the deck chairs and parasols here and there make it feel like somewhere else. But taken with the temperature and the laid back feel to the place it's as relaxing a location to chill out as you care to find. But you are without doubt on the Amazon as the surrounding rain forest trees with its wildlife remind you. The town itself is quite small and seems to centre on a town square with a few bars, a mini supermarket and souvenir shops. You'll know you've reached the centre by the brightly (yellow) coloured church on one side. It's a fairly simple church but, apart from the beach and the tours out into the jungle, it's probably the other main attraction.

Sand beaches in a river !
Oct 2018 • Friends
I’d have never guessed we were in a river while visiting the Alter do Chao beaches. It’s nice sand and the water is quite clear. And warm. We took a boat to a near by hidden beach to what the sunset. The are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Many cabanas in a sand beach to use. Plenty of boats for hire from tiny to large charter boats.
