This is where the people of nearby Santarem come for the weekend, as it is one of the few places on the Amazon with such an expanse of white sandy beach. It is a wide expanse of sand with all the things you would expect on a beach and is a good place to relax and sunbathe

You should go and see it yourself. You won't regret it, trust me. The only problem is getting there, avoid the boat from manaos or belem, is awful, take a plane.

The beach is lovely when I was there during the flood season. Sand, clean water, and lots of fun. Living near Cancun it would take a lot to impress me. The only drawback is the local custom of placing the tables and chairs right on the beach, making it impossible to walk along the beach with your toes in the... More

Great Beach for morning walks and watching the sunrise. Great also for watching the boats leave in the morning.

We visited many years ago on a cruise up as far as Manaus. This was one of the best port calls: a beautiful beach in the middle of the rainforest. But without the ability to swim safely! Check out the local lime drink caipirinha: lush!

The best time to go is between August and December, as the water level at the river is low. During weekends, the beach can be a bit busy. It offers some structure and services

Alter do Chao is easily accessible by bus (about 45 minutes from Santarem's porto), and definitely worth the trip. The river separates and rejoins, creating little islands that you can walk through the water to (or swim/boat to, depending how high the water is). There are several restaurants, kayak rentals, and the like along the beach. Trees grow near the... More

It is a great beach, however very busy. There are a lot of people during the weekend- but during the week it is amazing to go and not crowded. :)

Beautiful beach and community. Our first stop in the Amazon and we loved walking the streets, looking at the shops. We went to the shore in the lagoon area and contracted with a boat driver to take us around the lagoon. ($20!). I highly recommend this, we saw much birds, wildlife and locals fishing. It was near sunset so the... More
