We called in at Chateau Tahbilk for a cellar-door experience. We didn't dine at their restaurant nor undertake any other activities. We were quite familiar with their wines, which we liked ... a lot. We were certainly not to be disappointed. When we arrived we were surprised that the winery reminded us a wine chateau we had visited near Bordeaux a few years ago. Both the buildings and the grounds were very reminiscent. The winery dates from 1860 and has an impressive provenance. We sampled an array of whites and reds, including some vintage reds that aren't normally available for tasting, but the bottles had already been opened ... so our host invited us to try these too, which was must appreciated. And there no fee fo tasting at Tahbilk - unlike virtually any winery in NSW you go to these days.
We particularly liked their Cab Sav and the Cab Merlot, as well as some of the whites. Needless to say, we came away with a box of wine and also joined their wine club.
Don't miss the very impressive, evocative cellar under the tasting area. Also, the winery says it is carbon-neutral, another positive.

Tahbilk is one of Victoria's best known wineries. It has been producing estate grown and bottled wines since the 1860s.. It specializes in Rhone Valley varieties, such as Marsanne and Roussanne. The pre phyloxera reds are treasured and sell for premium prices.

Tahbilk Winery Estate, established in 1860, is the oldest family-owned winery and vineyard in Victoria. The Estate is owned by the Purbrick family for 5 generations since their purchase of the property in 1925.

Tahbilk is known for its Marsanne. Tahbilk has the world's largest single holding of Marsanne grapevines. Marsanne is a white wine grape variety from the RhĂ´ne Valley, perhaps best known for its role in the celebrated whites of Hermitage.

Tahbilk 1860 Vines Shiraz is produced from these plantings (some of the oldest in the world). After careful handpicking, fermentation takes place in century-old open oak vats followed by maturation in French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. An original label dating back to the 1870s has been adapted for this rare and unique wine.

My wife and I enjoyed visiting this winery and vineyard. We went hiking 6.3 km on the eco trail in this estate. During our visit on a Monday morning, there were no other visitors, which was very good for social distancing. Our car was the only car in the visitor's car park when we arrived and when we left.

This is a lovely heritage Australian style winery set in natural bushlands and wetlands. The wines are reasonable and quite reasonably priced and they do not charge for tasting. Marie gave us a very good wine tasting and lots of information about things to see and do locally!

Tahbilk is owned and managed by thr Purbick family, who are members of Australia's First Families of Wine, The famous chateau is the hallmark of Tahbilk, This well-known winery has a museum block that pre-dates the disastrous phylloxera plague of the 1860s, that almost wiped out the Australian wine industry. Tahbilk has extensive plantings of classic Rhone Valley grape varieties such as Marsanne. Marsanne is one of the few white wines that improve with age. Their Shiraz is a classic red that's full of flavour.

Thank you for your Review on Tahbilk Jeffry. We are truly passionate about our wine, and it's great to see that it shows in your review. Our 1860 Vine Shiraz block is a true testament to Australian wine history, and we're proud to have just a half hectare of plantings on the estate, it showcases the flavours of the Nagambie Lakes Wine region perfectly. We hope you'll get to try it someday soon!

Tahbilk has some of the world's oldest shiraz vines, dating from 1860. They survived the phylloxera plague that swept the world in the 19th century. One could say that the red wine from this block is unique. It has won many awards. Tabilk is also known for its uncommon Rhone Valley varieties. The vigneron is more than happy to introduce the Tabilk wines to visitors . The restaurant overlooks the wetlands; you can take in the vista while you dine.

If you go to one winery, go here. Tahbilk was the best and by far the most interesting winery we visited in Australia. Here you learn the history of wine in Australia and a family who worked hard to make it happen. Historic buildings, nature reserve open to public. Generous tastings of their better wines. Cafe. Dont miss it!!

What a great day we had at Tabilk! We started with the farmers market, lots of yummy local produce to take back to our BnB for dinner that night.
Then a private tasting with Michael, in the most amazing old building, just like stepping back in time!
We had lunch at the restaurant overlooking the lake, absolutely beautiful full of birds to watch whilst having our meal, the barramundi was delicious as was my partners Silverside.
Tiny criticism, the waitress saying you's when addressing us was a little grating.
We then went for a walk around the lake, couldn't have asked for a better day!!
Can't wait to return.

Thank you very much for visiting us, and for experiencing all the best parts of Tahbilk Winery, including the Wetlands View Restaurant, the Museum and the Eco-trails all in one day, it's fabulous to hear. We take your tiny criticism on board and whether "You's" is grating or endearing we'll certainly have a conversation about it within our team. Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Our tasting experience at Tahbilk was excellent. It is such an old winery and some of the old buildings are still being retained. It looks so attractive as you drive up. We were able to go downstairs into the cellar that dates back to 1860. Those attending to us were so helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. We really enjoyed the experience and the wines themselves. We joined their wine club (which, unusually, does not require a commitment to boxes of wine arriving on your door step regularly .) There was a very good variety of wines and at reasonable prices. This is certainly worth a visit.

The cellar door is a truly wonderful hidden gem! Slightly tucked away from the cafe, it is worth the walk over there. Plenty of on site history both in the grounds and the cellar door. A highlight was being able to go underground and still find that they use the barrells stored there in the current harvests. It was lovely to wander through and smell the oak and feel the tempturw difference then the somewhat warm day above ground. Being in the food industry ourselves we could imagine long tables running through the centre of it all and people sitting around enjoying lunch with matching wine amongst the barrels. The girls in the cellar door were very good at their job and made it comfortable to be there. They were very good at working out what sort of things we liked by asking a few questions and pointing us in the right direction, the sparkling shiraz even won me over (a general white wine drinker). We can not wait to sit back an enjoy the goodies we purchased.
