We took the fireflies tour.
The van came to pick us up on time, our guide was very nice and fun, very knowledgable and helpful. We saw at least 7 trees covered in fireflies, which was very romantic and poetic (except for the noisy motorised boat filled with fat people). The kayak are sturdy and safe, only 2km to paddle. I don't do any exercice at all and it was perfectly manageable!
All in all, a lovely tour. We just thought it was quite expensive (1950 php each) versus island hopping for example at 1400php, considering a kayak don't need fuel and the tour only last 2 hours.
The diner wasn't fantastic, as described by other review but pretty basic (soup rice 2 piece of chicken and one banana), in a room with neon lights. Not the most romantic way to end your evening. We would have prefered a "dinner less" option and to pick a nice restaurant ourselves for the tour than to stay there.
Staff is however very nice and efficient and the fireflies didn't disappoint!

Absolutely stunning experience!
This kayak trip was truly one of the two highlights of my trip to the Philippines.

The route we took was gorgeous and very quiet, with only my guide and myself kayaking into the mangrove and down the river. The night portion of the excursion was unique, being able to kayak so close to the fireflies (with some even landing on your hand) really made for a mesmerising evening.
The best part of the experience was probably the guide though, I was lucky enough to have the whole tour to myself and the guide was really knowledgeable about the mangrove, detailing all the different species and how each had it’s own benefits for the ecosystem and for the locals.
This brings me to the last portion of the excursion where motorised boats joined us in the river for firefly watching, these boats are causing massive erosion within the mangrove and slowly killing the flora and fauna alike.
It’s good to know that companies such as Kayak Asia are raising awareness about these issues with tourists and the authorities.

The last point I would like to mention is that my friend fell ill the day before the tour and KayakAsia very generously offered to refund his ticket, I can’t recommend this company enough!

We were a group of 4 friends who went on the Firefly Kayaking tour and we had a great time. It was a clear night so the stars were incredible, the fireflies were stunning and overall it was a lovely evening. We also found the dinner to be really delicious! The only downside was the price. For the Philippines, £30 per head is rather steep for a kayaking trip. If some of the money is going to support the local community then that would be great, however that was not made clear at any point so you are left wondering why it is so expensive.

We took the Mangrove+Firefly tour, and a few days later we took the Sunset Sandbar tour. (We were the only ones on the sandbar!) Please support KayakAsia and their environmentally sound tourism. Yes, it’s more expensive than motor boat tours, but you will not be guilty of destroying the environment.

I highly recommend Kayakasia Philippines for your firefly watching and guided kayak experience. Vince our Pro Kayak guide was very informative and enriching as he discuss the importance of Abatan river ecosystem and the fireflies. I highly suggest to avail and use kayak when you want to explore the river. On my personal view motorized boats are too disturbing for the ecosystem.

Dinner is served after the trip and the menu is outstanding Kudos to Derk and the kitchen team. They will ask you as you book if you do have food allergens, they will take care of you on that.👍👍👍

Arrived in Tagbilaran city later in the afternoon and was able to book this tour and not feel like I wasted a day just traveling. Highly recommend the kayak tour (you can be in a double or single kayak depending on your preference) as it is quiet and can avoid the other motorboats that have lots of people. My guide was amazing and told me all about local wildlife, conservation, and of course about the fireflies. Seeing them by the thousands in the trees are really something incredible. Pictures don’t do it justice so my memory photos will have to do. Ended the evening with a delicious home cooked meal.

We did the firefly night tour. This is an amazing evening, and the fireflies were putting on a great show. You get a good quality kayak, safety talk and a fantastic guide (more about him later). We set out as the sun was going down, paddling along the river, with the most incredible scenery by your side. Herons flying overhead and bats flapping about as it gets darker. We stopped at intervals so that our guide, Vince , could make sure we were ok and share his knowledge, and wow! what knowledge. Vince is very experienced and knows a lot about the local ecology and folk stories which he tells you about with enthusiasm and humour. And then of course there are the fireflies lighting up the trees like a magical Christmas extravaganza, absolutely stunning as you sit under the trees in the darkness. Then it's back to base for a great meal of local dishes, delicious!!

This trip was fantastic! I went with friends and my husband and our 9 and 11 years old. Our friends have a 13 year old. Everyone loved it! The kayaking equipment was well kept, the guide knowledgeable and the experience unforgettable! We learned about mangroves and the fireflies and area. If you’ve ever been out catching fireflies this is nothing like that experience! This is thousands of fireflies making trees look like living bioluminescence! The experience is a once in a lifetime experience!

We spent the whole afternoon and evening in delight. Very respectful of the beautiful nature with amazing sights of the mangrove and mesmerizing fireflies. Delicious food, home made and very kindly served to help us appreciate Philippines delicacies. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the fireflies as well as graciously sharing about the plants and daily lives there. Highly recommended experience! Was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
