It is said that this tree was born by chance from a seed of imported goods centuries ago and, this be true or not, it’s a really impressing plant to admire. The trunk is huge, so are the branches and its bark is extremely interesting to touch and see. If you love plants, it’s a must!

This is only 500m away from the mannar city center and very easy to find. It's a very old bush type of a tree. Not that tall but with a huge circumference. There are other similar type of trees in mannar but not this big. It's worth seen this as it is a unique floral type.

This is one of the places of interests in Mannar. The baobabs in Sri Lanka is believed to have been brought by Arabian Traders. According to a study done in 2003, there are about 40 Baobab Trees surviving in Sri Lanka, out of which 34 has been identified and measured in Mannar. Most of the trees were calculated to be 300-400 years old. The oldest and the largest baobab is at Pallimunei which is said to be about 800 years old. This tree was calculated 723 years old in the 2003 study. The circumference of the tree is is 19.5 meters and its 7.5 meters tall.

If you are a Nature Lover, or even otherwise, you must make a visit to this extremely rare Giant plant located about 1.5 - 2km away from Mannar Town. There is a road in front of Mannar Dry Fish market, very close to Mannar Bridge, and you will have to travel a short distance on this road. The tree is located on your left side, near St. Lucia's Church when you travel from Mannar Town. The TRUNK of the plant is HUGE, may be 8-10 people on average are needed to make a circle around the trunk. You can imagine the size of the trunk of the plant. However, the plant is not so tall, may be 7-7.5m.
The plant has a very long life time; according to a very poorly legible descriptive notice board, it was planted by Arab sailors and may be planted in 1477.

Mahatirtha is the ancient name for Mannar. It means great port. Ancient coins and other items from east and west is found here. Baobab tree is a historic tree providing evidence of international relations. I have seen two other trees on thalimannar road.
