The surrounding area of the church has become very much urbanised. I can still recall the woodland like surroundings and the forest beyond when I last visited the holy shrine in early seventies. On this occasion, the time we visited the shrine was almost midday and it had less pilgrims thus providing us with an easy access.

No word to express how I feel about this location which is filled with all kind of blessings from our lady Madhu. We were lucky to visit and participate with feast held at Madhu shrine this time of the year and we are hoping to visit our lady Madhu on August. Thank you Amma.

This is a Powerful Church, and you feel very comfortable when you get there,,,, You must make the best of of your Pilgrimage by attending the mass and getting the blessing of our Lord and Holy Mother, You do get small houses or rooms and its your choice to get what you like,,,,, This time we did get a good guest house just at the entrance to Madhu ,, its just a short drive to the church,,, this place is just nice and comfortable as well,,A/C rooms etc,,, We just want to get the Blessing of our Lord and Blessed Holy Moth, which we do every year! My son and daughter [ in law ] take us every year ! God Bless them and our families,,,, I like to ask any of you who have not gone to this Hly place to make sure you do,,, Never mind what religion you are! You will get the Blessing of our Holy Mother! Miracles do work,! God bless you all.

I was able to pay a long standing vow to Our Blessed Mother and although the Mass was in Tamil/ Sinhala I was happy to participate , the Church was crowded , to see how so many people flock to this shrine from all corners of the Island says it all.

The toilet facilities were utterly horrible and soured my experience of the church, which I had wanted to visit for a very long time. Such a busy church to provide facilities so bad is totally demeaning to the worshippers.

So much peace and calm can be obtained here. Just sit in front of the shrine and meditate. Very miraculous, you must promise to return again to give thanks.
Sadly there is no mid day mass on week days, so if you deicide to visit on a weekday just for the day the mass is early morning only.

Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu is one of the en-route destinations in the north of Sri Lanka, between Mannar and Jaffna.
The history of this catholic church goes back for over 4 centuries. To safeguard the catholic mission this shring was kept in the jungle of Madhu. Now, it’s being a very popular church and a most visited pilgrim among the catholic population around Sri Lanka.
Also, visited by tourist regardless the religions, ethnics, nationalities and so on…
The services/mass are conducted in both the native languages (Tamil & Sinhalese) in the mornings and the evenings. The special festival season is in August and the final festival is on the 15th of August. During this period the area is crowed and the church is filled with pilgrims, which makes the visit of the church a highly busy.
So, better avoid this period to visit here.
Pilgrims can rent accommodation around the church for a very reasonable price. Eating around is a challenge. (The food available in the canteen adjoining the church is not up to the mark and a bit over priced for what you get. But, it’s a clean and comfortable place to sit and have something to eat.)
Having a dip in to the fresh water pond closer to the church is possible and something interesting to do.
NB: Im rating this land mark as excellent as Im a catholic and still believe and following the same.

Any coaches from Colombo to the shrine and how much
Written February 5, 2019
As far as I am aware, there is no regular ccoach service to Madhu. But, if you take a bus to Mannar from Colombo, you can get off at Madhu ajunction and take a tuk-tuk to the shrine. You can also take a train from Colombo to Madhu Junction. The bus will be faster, but the train should be more comfortable.
