The trip to Haft-Kul/the Seven Lakes is out of this world.

Watch out that if you want to drive it is all dirt track, and often there is room for only one car to pass!

My hotel in Panjakent arranged a day trip with a taxi driver. i paid 870 TJS/€72 and the driver did everything calmly, with lots of photo breaks, from 9am to 4pm.

You need to hike, around an hour each way, from the sixth lake to the seventh.

Spectacular day.

We did a return day trip from the Panjakent border to Haft-Kul, seven lakes. Our driver Rohan (+992 931950008 on telegram) met us at the border and drove us for the day to each of the lakes, and to Mijgon homestay for lunch. He spoke English, and was helpful and informative. The lakes are breathtaking. Lake 7 is reached by hiking 40 minutes. The others you all pass by car. Highly recommended trip!

On October 9th my wife and I have made a daytrip along Haftkul, the seven lakes, starting in Penjikent. It was a perfect day, with a blue sky. We left our hotel in Penjikent at 8.30. Although we expected a very bad road, the unpaved road - the asphalt ended after about half an hour - was better than we expected. Our driver had a Toyota RAV4, but we also saw local people with normal cars driving uphill on this road.
To give an idea of the time you need, after an hour at about 9.30 we arrived at the first lake, at 10.00 at the second one which is very photogenic because of trees on the shore. The third lake, with a very blue color, we saw at 10.20. After number four, came the fifth lake, the smallest, at 11.00 and the sixth at 11.15. Finally we went in the direction of the 7th lake. Although it is said that you only can walk to the seventh lake, it would be possible to go by car because the unpaved road continues until the last one. We had the idea that we have walked the last part to support local people, because a local guide walked with us uphill. The last part, about half an hour, is not steep and easy to walk. We arrived at 12.20 at the seventh lake and at about 13.00 we were back at the car. We had lunch at 13.45 in a B&B in a village a little back on the road. We also had a little walk in this village with a lot of attention from the local children who liked to talk with us. After lunch we returned to Penjikent, where we arrived at about 16.30.
Summarized a nice daytrip in a very nice scenery, not only because of the lakes with – hopefully for everybody – a blue sky but also because of the villages you pass. It is possible to stay at night in a B&B in a village, but we saw it is rather basic (and there were no other guests). And, because it was rather chilly in the evening, we decided – and would advise in October and also if you like some comfort – to go back to Penjikent.

The legend says the seven daughters of a lost man came to look for him and since they couldn't find him, they sat and waited, crying for the loss. The tears became these 7 beautiful jewel lakes. From Penjikent you can ride a car till lake 5 or six, and then trek for an hour or two for lake number seven. There are homestays to spend a very local night. It's an easy trek and a wonderful experience.

I've been often to the Seven Lakes and visited all the ZTDA home-stays. The area is an extremely beautiful and tranquil place. The lakes are extraordinary although too cold for swimming. You can drive up to Nofin or Padrud Village, overnight at the home-stay and from there start hiking up to the 7th lake on a 4hs walk. For more hard core hikers, drive up to Shing and from there start hiking on a full-day hike. Definitely it's worth staying at the home-stays where people are so friendly and kind, food is delicious and you can really relax there!

If you don't have long in Tajikistan, for goodness sake put this at the top of your destination list. The joruney across Tajikistan from Khojand or Dushanbe is dramatic and a treat in itself. The Seven Lakes are idyllic, calming and stunningly beautiful. Each of the lakes is a different colour and named after body parts! In the evening, the area is filled with a rich aroma of mountain herbs and if you are lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, you will be blessed with some amazing photos! The villages around the Seven Lakes are picturesque and the people welcoming and if they will let you, make for some fantastic portraits.

Stay in Jumaboy's homestay near the third lake and you will not be disappointed. Jumaboy is an incredible host and makes you feel very much at home. His simple homestay is clean and you will be treated to traditional Tajik fare much better than anywhere else on your visit and made with organic produce from Jumaboy's garden. Seven Lakes for me is as much about sitting on Jumaboy's tabchan (day bed) as it is staring at the reflections in the mighty sixth lake.

We travelled to the Seven Lakes at the end of June. Stayed at the guest-house of Jumaboy at the 6th lake. The guest house is nice and very clean. The owner is really amazing - I have not seen such warm and sincere hospitality in any guesthouse in the world.
The lakes are magnificent: all of different colour, cold and tranquil.
My son (11 y.o.) enjoyed the trip and would like to come back to the lakes next summer.
If you take it, be prepared for a long drive by a mountanious road - need a 4-wheel drive. It might be very hot on the way, untill you reach the lakes, as they do not use climate-control in the vehicles here.

Hi, I've been traveling around Uzbekistan, then when I was in Samarkand I had this idea to go to Tadjikistan to see the amazing Iskanderkul lake.
So I met with Rohib at the border (2h by taxi from Samarkand), his Whatsapp number is +992931950008, he's friendly and speak english, you can't ask for more 🙂

Definitely one of the things you should see when in Tajikistan. The only con to this is that if you don't hike the whole way, which takes a day or to, you'd get to endure a really scary car ride on a steep slope of the mountain. I was really scared we're going to fall down the hill as the road is just cut into the mountain-slope and very narrow. Yeah, the views were definitely worth it.
