We started the hike from the Cazevieille parking lot. The sign indicated a hike of 3 kilometers each way and about 2 hours walking round trip. It is a very steep and rocky climb so make sure you have good hiking boots if possible. Light-weight sneakers work too but not as well. Also, bring water. It took us about an hour to hike up and about 45 minutes to go back down. The view from the top is definately worth the effort especially on a clear day.

I went with my two daughters, aged 10 and 12, along with a friend and her two children of the same ages. I had no idea what kind of climb it would be but my climbing companion had said it was not overly difficult.
It turned out to be a marginally good workout. It is not a super steep climb, (just in the last 25-30mins of the climb to the summit), but the terrain of the trail is the challenge. It is a very gravelly path (rather than packed soil), with largish rocks and bigger than average gravel rocks. This gives an extra work to the ankles and feet, (of course to the overall body too), so be sure to have good sturdy footwear on.
We took about 2 hours to ascend and it was well worth it - despite some "are we there yet" complaints along the way. Lol.
We brought plenty of water, (which we consumed much of on the way up), and some fruit and small cakes for the summit.
The views are tremendous and well worth the climb, all along the way. Especially once you reach "Le Pic"!
It's a good afternoon hike for a family, and we passed several families with younger (little) kids than ours, so quite possible for a variety of ages. Plan for 4.5 to 5.5 hours overall, if you take your time along the way, and a snack rest at the top. Depending how long your ascent takes.
Not to mention this region is also a fine wine growing area. Living in Montpellier we are fortunate to have tried several Pic Saint-Loup varieties. Lucky us! :)

The information centre in Montpellier will tell you it is not possible to get there by public transport. This is not entirely true. Bus 115 goes in the required direction and the mountain can be accessed by either St Jean de-Cuculles or St Mathieu de-Treviers villages. The bus driver dropped us on the outskirts of St Mathieu but it was signposted on how to get to Pic St-Loup. It was apprix a 15min walk to the carpark and then another 1hr 15min to the summit (however we are fast walkers). Getting back to Montpellier proved to be difficult as the last bus from St Mathieu de-Treviers leaves at around 130pm. We ended up hitch-hiking back. We were quoted 35 euro for a taxi back.

In summary, easy to get there by public transport, not so easy to get back if your are later than 130pm

The track itself is very rugged so take some sturdy footwear!

I did this climb on a wet and windy day in late October after a Booking.com mix up left us in Cazevieille for 2 days - with no car. And no proper walking shoes. Got to the summit in an hour in my running trainers quite easily but beware. This is a steep and treacherous rocky trek over jagged, rutted, broken stone with few if any patches of flat ground. And so steep at the top you need to scramble up with your hands in places. You need to be very careful. Especially coming down. The descent was unpleasant and the risk of slipping, falling and breaking something was frankly high without proper footwear. The views at the top were spectacular but it was so windy and overcast I didn’t stay long there. There are rather minimal painted signs to ensure you stay on the right path and though I didn’t get lost I thought there could have been a few more obvious and clearer painted direction pointers on the rocks and trees. Pleased I did this but you need the right footwear. And a head for heights at the summit!

We tried to get there by public transport but found it impossible because there is only 2 hours between the first bus there and the last to leave!

Lucky for me, I registered on the OVS and joined someone to do this Pic St-Loup hiking. I wanted very much to do this after I checked “things to do in Montpellier”. It took a while to drive there.
With absolutely no idea about this hike, I had checked a lot on the internet and had got even more confused as some said it had been quite sportive while others had brushed it away like nothing.
Finally I did it, I would say it is NOT sportive at all for people who are used to doing hiking which involves roads leading up and up, leaving people breathing heavily and sweating profusely. The Pic Saint-Loup walk is quite flat and not very long. The most important thing is: RIGHT SHOES! robust sports shoes or sneakers are a MUST because the road is covered with small loose rocks which are actually annoying as sometime I had to focus a bit on my feet; this split my attention from enjoying the company and the walk itself. Second, bring the drinking water (in summer better bring two bottles) as there is NO SERVICE at all around the area. For people who are sensitive to the sun in the summer, there are no shades so you’d better be equipped with the sun block.
The fortress or rather the ruins of it at the top was quite interesting. We sat there relaxing enjoying the view eating snacks (no litter anywhere, take the garbage away with you) and contemplating how people had managed to build the fortress hundreds of years ago.

St Pic Loup
Our family whilst on a holiday decided to climb this. We choose a cool day and would advise you do the same or go very early, I can imagine doing it at the height of a hot day not being pleasant.

Our family consisted of an active couple with 16, 11 and 7 year old children. All managed the climb fine. I wore tracker sandals but if I was to do it again I would suggest shoes, trainers as a minimum. Nothing too tricky about the climb and the views at the top are very good.

We set off from the car park cazevielle which was very straight forward to find. You can also start from one of the other local villages which is a little longer and the trails met up about half way up.

The climb up took about 1 hour and the same down.

Getting there without a car is not impossible, as some say, but it's a bit of a challenge. The bus from Montpellier drops you "in the middle of nowhere", which is about an hour (brisk) walk from Cazevieille, the village at the foot of the mountain. The climb itself is a challenge, but doable, even for a moderately obese person such as myself. Don't expect a regular sort of 'path' either: the way up is very roughly hewn out of the rock, so most of it is very rough gravel/rock. Wear proper shoes! Remember that afterwards, you have to walk back to Mas de Londres (or you could try to hitch a ride from your fellow hikers) and catch the bus (only goes one way) to Saint Martin De Londres (beautiful village which you can also visit, if you still have the energy!) to get the last bus back to Montpellier around six. I'd say it was more than worth it!

This is a great hike up one of the most well known landmarks in the area. There is a church at the top with a description of the story behind the name of the Pic and why the locals have a special celebration every year. (no spoilers here - you have to climb to read it in French or English).
Depending on your fitness, tolerance for uneven ground, piercing Mediterranean sun, dry air, and ability to resist taking a photo every few yards, it will take you somewhere between 1 and 2 hours to climb. The path is uneven and strewn with scree and boulders. It is also very well marked.
It's about 1200 ft of vertical gain over 3km distance.
The first 1/2 has very little shade. The last .5km (past the big cairn pile) is steeper but no special equipment necessary.
Bring plenty of water as the is non on the route.
To get there, set your GPS for Cazevielle. The parking lot at the bottom of the hike is just past town (to the east). Do not depend on entering "Pic St Loup" in your GPS it will likely take you somewhere else.
We rented a scooter in Montpellier for about 60 euros and it took us about 45 minutes each way.

Most of the reviews mention the fact how hard it is to reach the Pic. And although it is the tallest thing in the whole area, it is. Public transport is a no no. You need a car, really. And even then, road signs to the Pic are leading nowhere. So here is the definitive tip to get there:drive to Cazevielle and THERE you can follow the signs for the Parking of Pic St. Loup. I must admit this will lead you to the less difficult and shorter path (and for some of you less challenging route) but for us, familiy of 4 (with two teenagers) this was just right.. A 90 minutes sometimes steep walk over rocks and on small pathways through the bushes without it ever being real climbing. It's tiring enough to make it a work out for the non sporty people out there (like us) but it's doable and the view is magnificent.
SOME TIPS:
- Don't were flip flops, go for hiking shoes or very sturdy sneakers (but really, go for hiking shoes)
- Bring a lot of water. There isn't any on top of the mountain
- At the top there are is a narrow pathway to the right. Follow that, you'll have stunning views of the north face which is the rock climbing part of the Pic and there are no people.
