My son and I had a wonderful hike through the redwoods. The hike starts along the river and then in about half a mile or so it turns and starts going up and up and up. Nothing very steep and lots of it is in the shade. You get beautiful vistas along the way.

This hike will take you through a redwood-lined canyon and up to a ridge overlooking the ocean, where you will find a rusty abandoned house made of sheet metal. It's a great place to stop and admire the spectacular views. You can then either return the way you came, or take a fire trail back to the Pacific Coast Highway, where you can walk a mile or so back up to the trailhead, 6.6 miles in all. If you search for "hiking big sur" you can find a website with more detailed information.

We hiked down the trail and the end of the trail was absolutely phenomenal. it felt that once we had gone through the tunnel we were in another world.
Absolutely amazing.

Knowing this area had a significant fire a few years ago, we were skeptical of this hike. The area has recovered wonderfully from the fire, and it’s in terrific shape . It’s a relatively easy and very beautiful creekside walk until you get to McLaughlin Grove (sign pictured), then the elevation gain starts and the hike becomes moderately strenuous if you maintain any pace. There are plenty of burned redwoods to tell the fire’s tale. The hike is mostly flat, soft surfaces, but it gets steep, wet, and is slippery in a few places. The trail sign is 100 paces from the road. We went up and turned-around, as the walk down Tin House would have included a lengthy walk-back North along 1 to our car. The Partington Cove Trail is worth the effort, too, and definitely go through the tunnel. The two trails together are a half day if you hustle.
