Big Creek Bridge is a 589 foot long spectacular concrete deck arch bridge located on the southern portion of the Big Sur coast of California, along State Route 1 near Lucia. Certainly worth driving southbound over it and taking a photo stop on it’s southern side after crossing over it.

We saw it coming from the South and noticed white tarp covering the supports below the highway so you can really see the bridge outside of that. The first big bridge you hit though and it is just outside of Gorda.

Visitors to this bridge tend to just throw their vehicles on the road... you have to be very careful while driving because the bridge is right after a curve and you just run across the wrongly parked vehicles.

This is the most beautiful bridge on RT1. Most people are much more aware of the Bixby bridge but this one is way better. Its south of Big Sur.

Your photo will look like you took it from a drone if you stop just south of the bridge--there is a great view.

No far away (further down South) from Bixby Creek Bridge is this Bridge. The best view is from South end which covers both bridge and surroundings. It’s gorgeous and very magnificent as well. Basically, there are countless great views and vista points on this Route to fully explore Big Sur

While the Bixby Bridge, just a short distance south of Carmel gets all the attention, the Big Creek Bridge, located another 31.4 miles (50.6k) south, near the midway point of the Big Sur Coast, gets little attention despite being similar in design and just as picturesque. From the pullout about 0.5 mile (0.8k) south of the bridge, one gets a view that is a bit more distant but unobstructed with the trace of the PCH clearly visible as winds around the headland hills and then across the bridge over the Big Creek.

As we are driving north on Highway 1, we always look forward to our first sighting of the concrete Big Creek Bridge because it looks to us like an integral part of the hills and coastline. Bends in the road afford several romantic aspects of the repeating arches of the bridge seemingly pressed into the rock of a similar color and the road which passes between the mountain and a giant pointed rock on the ocean side and then disappears around the side of the mountain. Like Hoover dam, the bridge was built as a public works project to generate jobs during the Great Depression. It is not as long or as high as the more popular Bixby Bridge, but it is our favorite because it seems a more graceful part of the lonely coast road.

Driving South we passed over Big Creek Bridge and then parked about half a mile past it. The combination of the view of the Bridge itself and the clear outline of the road beside the mountain really illustrates the marvel that is Highway 1
