- Noelle GSan Jose, California61 contributionsOne of the Most Iconic Places on the West CoastThe reviewers seem to be treating Esalen just like any other luxury hotel. But it's not. If you attend the best workshop for you, meet and talk to people over meals, experience the baths etc. this can be a place for transformation. I know it has been for me, since I was a work scholar back in 1993 and from many return trips since. I do remember how good the food was in the past and will admit last time I was there not every food item was up to that high standard. Maybe after the Pandemic the food budget had to be cut? I also am not that thrilled with people "needing" to use their electronic devices and not going on digital detox. There is no other retreat center like Esalen and you need to be open to whatever happens.Visited December 2021Written November 27, 2022
- ScubbyHMillbrae, California57 contributionsGreat as usualSecond visit and still amazing. For some reason, I got to stay in the same room. Workshop is pretty fun as usual. I am more open this time and got to talk to a few amazing people. It was a wonderful yet a little different experience. I didn't pack my charger. Be warned. You need them. They start to offer premium wifi in premium locations. However, I didn't pack my charger, so I didn't use my devices except for time tracking .... A lot of planning involved in terms of using my phone/watch for time. It didn't bother me too much. It was a good time to do tech detox. But it was a bit difficult to track time. I tried message again. It was slightly better but still not as good. Last time, the message just didn't do much for me. This time, my therapist offered thai massage. I have to say that it is very awkward to do thai massage while fully naked. At least, I felt a bit tension relief this time around (v.s. felt nothing last time). The bath is beautiful as usual. I got to enjoy the full moon view (again) and did star gazing at night. Most of people I talked to have returned to campus many many times during many many years. This tells something. I thoroughly plan to come back for another visit. :) I do however hope Esalen could post some room photos online. They seem to have done a renovation recently but never shared it, making it a bit difficult to decide which room/type of accommodation to pick.Visited March 2022Written March 23, 2022
- Roam798278 contributionsI dream of Esalen, year-roundI've been to a number of retreats at Esalen, and it is hands-down one of my favorite places on the planet. The location is breathtakingly beautiful. The staff is friendly, warm, and helpful. The workshop/retreat offereings are unlimited and so full of wisdom, learning, and clarity to be gained. The hot springs-baths are wonderful. The massage therapists are world-class. The accomodations range from basic to fairly luxurious; take your pick based on preference and budget. There are places that have tried to imitate Esalen, but none can capture its magic.Visited July 2019Written March 5, 2020

Do a thorough research on what you really want before booking, because it's not for everyone, if you know what I mean. One thing for sure, Esalen relies heavily on its rich past glory, and today it doen't even hold a candle.
If you're part of the overstressed silicone rat race crowd and don't mind blowing 2 to 3 grand in a weekend, this may be your artificial relief valve, but true holistic people "play" smartly and won't touch this place with a ten foot pole.
And if you decide to come, please, don't bring your kids.
By now you get the point.

This is not about a stay at Esalen, which I have done several times. It is about an unfortunate experience that my adult son & daughter in-lave had last week. They were visiting Big Sur for the day and had driven from Pacific Grove. On their return their electric car was on reserve. Pulling into Esalen, they asked if they could charge the vehicle and pay any associated cost. They were vehemently denied this courtesy. Waiting for nearly 2 hours for AAA roadside side assistance to tow them back to Pacific Grove , they remained in the vehicle without exiting. Esalen was founded to expand human potential, create shared community and values which include empathy ,kindness and expanded consciousness. They had actually hoped to spend a future weekend at Esalen which certainly won't happen after this unplanned hostile contact.

A place with lots of history. Aside from the spectacular surroundings and scenery, few people know Esalenwas frequented by Charles Manson during the '60s, the last time on July 1969 driving the Hostess Twinkies van. I know this from a very, very close family member who was a direct witness to his visits. Spent a full day, which didn't convince me at all. Very poor customer service, mostly young scholars who try, but lack the concept and understanding of the specific crowd the Institute targets. This was the first impression I got at check-in, and during my entire stay.
Had two massages which were ok, but no different than the average parlor charging a lot less.
Mundane and indifferent crowd, more into taking pictures than experiencing a holistic experience. They were also quite loud at times, showing no respect for those seeking a quiet time. There was never a holistic connection, even the instructor/s lacked motivation.
Food quality is substandard, featuring a high school cafeteria environment with long lines and again, poor service.
I left with lots of questions and barely any exclamation marks. A shame

I can only describe my experience here as mendacious, thanks in great part to the rude and nefarious customer service the campground staff delivers, acting like they're doing you a favor. It's no wonder the Institute has been on a steadt nose dive in terms of quality and authenticity, having lost its holistic roots.
Housing accommodations still leave a lot to be desired, as it always has. But it becomes a concern when considering the astronomical prices charged for even the shortest retreat. I would not recommend to spend to spend the night here. Instead, you can either go camping nearby or get a superb room at any local hotel in Carmel.

I've been visiting the baths/massage at Esalen for years and love it, but had a very strange massage experience this last visit. Masseuse was friendly and kind but seemed untrained and inexperienced, took several breaks during the massage, just leaving me on the table, and then for some inexplicable reason, she ended the massage 15 minutes early by just disappearing. No explanation.

My first trip to California we spent two weeks, and week around Big Sur. We saw the sign and stopped in at Esalen, I had been looking into taking a two week module at Esalen. The woman at the gate said do you have a reservation, I said no, she replied this gate is as far as you go, you can turnaround and leave. She did not smile and was very cold. I explained I was from Canada and it was my first trip to California and had been looking at taking a 2 week module at Esalen, asked if I could take a couple minutes and just see the place. She stated coldly again, this gate is as far as you get you can turn around and leave. We have a website if you want to see the place. I felt like I had been assaulted. My whole trip in California and the only place I was treated rudely, and ignorantly was at a place that was supposed to be about kindness, love, peace and respect to one another. I felt really hurt. I understand if it is private but she could have been kind and explained this but she was rude. She made a mumbled comment to the person standing beside her at the gate and snickered. I am only thankful that I did not spend over $4000 US to take a two week intensive at a place that does not do what they teach. Maybe they only treat you well after they have your credit card payment. Extremely hurt and disappointed.

I visited Esalen in June of this year - on the strength of its reputation and the experiences of colleagues who had visited there over the years.I am a trainer, coach and author based in Ireland and working mainly in Europe. While the setting is stunning, the baths met expectations, and the workshop was satisfactory the rest of my Esalen experience left much to be desired. As I was visiting from Europe I had to rely on ZImride - which didn't work. I found the accomdation adequate and clean but not worth the price charged. The food was poor - I am familiar with good vegetarian cooking in other similar establishments in Europe. I had difficulties getting out of the place because nobody responed to my requests for transport and I had to resort to the direct approach to get off the campus. On making enquiries at the front desk about future workshops I was dealt with in a very dismissive way. When I went on-line to complain I was dealt with equally dismissively and after a protracted correspondence I am still no nearer getting resolution of my issues. They could not find my orginal complaint when I raised queries. A snail mail letter to the Chief Executive was not even acknowledged.
My message is to any potential visitor is: think carefully about going there. At one time Esalen was the gold standard, the one to aspire to but regrettably the rest of the world has caught up with it.Places like Chrysalis in Ireland and FIndhorn in Scotland have long passed it out.
I regret the carbon miles I spent getting to a place that is so disorganised and out of touch with the real world. I cannot justify the expense, inconvenience or effect on the planet in the effort of a return visit.

I am very ambivalent about writing this review. I've been going to Esalen regularly for over 20 years and this place has been a sanctuary to me and I've had life changing experiences there. I last went in March. The workshop leader was great (Dorthy Charles) as were the other participants, and that is why I went, but I feel compelled to write about the change in the "vibe" at Esalen; especially of late. It was always supposed to be a equitable community where pretenses were left outside. When I worked in the kitchen in 1994 as a monthly work scholar there used to be sign over the door that says "everyone's job is as important as everyone else's" - or something to that affect. That sign is no longer there.
Over the years they started making "premium rooms" and courting a more affluent bunch of people. It has never been cheap to go there, but it was a lottery of sorts before. You paid for a standard room and if you were lucky you got the Big House; if not Motel Row. First they took away staff housing and made expensive Pointe Houses. Now even the group space that was initially built for Fritz Perlz when he was a resident is part of a "premium room" set-up. So sad. That is where Gestalt Awareness Practice with Dick Price was born, and where the last group at Esalen with Christine Price was held. She no longer affiliates with Esalen and I suspect I am pointing out the reason why.
So the last time I was there I paid for a five-day workshop (over nine hundred dollars) and was in one of the bunk rooms. I've done this many times. While it was always very simple, it was at least clean. Not so this time. The carpet probably hasn't been replaced since the 70's. The furniture is worn and filthy. The door was literally falling apart.
It was also the first week of the new construction and overnight a wall of straw bales went up making my roommates and I have to walk a huge detour to get to the lodge. No apologies. No compensation. Nothing. Now on the emails I get from Esalen PR they brag how the construction has not been any disruption at all. I know they know that's not so. I wrote on the feedback form how unfair I felt the experience was and left it in the office. My name and number was on it. No response. I posted my thoughts on their Facebook page. It got deleted.
Oh...and the food used to be so great. Not so any more. I think they are cutting corners. More than once they ran out of things mid-meal time. Not near the variety or quality as in years past.
And lastly, as many people have said over the years, the staff/work scholars can often treat the seminarians rudely. NO reason for that. Case in point - one morning I got up early and went to the lodge for coffee and toast before the 7am yoga. I was rudely told to get out of the lodge because they were locking it for the morning mopping. So much for 24-hour service of coffee and fresh breads. But as I was leaving some guy in a bathrobe wandered in and the same person who told me to leave said to him; "Good morning! We have fresh coffee in the kitchen!" I think it was the dot.com guy who owns AirB&B and who "donated" a million dollars to the new renovation. I'm pretty sure he's not in one of the bunkhouses.
Esalen, I am very sad. I see what you have done to yourself be a microcosm of the culture at large. It seems Eslalen is aligning itself to the "1%", and sadly losing its soul and purpose in the process.

I have been coming here for years but now I am over it / it's dead - maybe that's why the place is covered in flies ? Feeding off the bones of what it used to be.
cheap food, sub standard workers, multiple sexual harassment lawsuits, and increasing prices... human potential has moved on.
A million dollar lodge remodel presumably by an inexperienced Murphy family friend has lead to a ridiculous guest experience (queues of over an hour some evenings to get dinner - usually pasta bake) and permanently reduced food budget to pay for the building overspend.
Staff are made up of 'work scholars', young people who pay to work here so they can be part of the 'magic'(and avoid work visas and general real life) an itinerant bunch of introspective privileged white kids with limited work ethic, leading to less than substandard service.
With an increasing amount of 'premium housing' being offered you can now pay thousands of dollars for a weekend of non service and frozen Costco food masking as homemade.
The tubs and scenery are still a draw but its Esalen's lawyers along with the cowboy builders that designed and built the new lodge that are the only people doing well out of esalen these days (and of course the few long termers that are still clinging on since the 60's - former gardeners now claiming to be intuitive gestalt therapists because they are old and once sat next to dick price at lunch).
It's definitely not serving it's guests, don't bother.

While the grounds are beautiful and the main buildings appear to be recently constructed or updated the actual place where you will stay is an abomination. While they work to be eco-friendly, I don't know that they are human friendly. For over 1k for 5 days you can stay in a room with 3 people. While I had indicated and particularly selected and paid the extra expense for a semi-private room because of a bulging disc it was anything but private. I was the last to arrive at what appears to be a shack of a room with a loft. Therefore as there were no other rooms available I had to haul my 40lb. Suitcase up to the loft that I cannot stand in upright and I am 5ft 7.5. The entire cottage smelled like cat urine. I don't know that it was actually cat urine or maybe human urine but it reeked such that my clothes etc. smelled. The bottom of the toilet did not appear to be sealed with caulk and was off set on the floor so perhaps I was inhaling sewer gasses? The shower was dirty and filled with mold. The caulk and grout were filled with mold, the sink had mold in the caulk and was dirty the window encasement mold, the sky light mold. It was also so damp that the condensation dripped off the sky light onto the floor. Everything was damp and despite hanging for 24 hours my towel
never dried.
For the first 4 days we froze at night and I put my coat on my bed because there didn't appear to be any heat. Well it appears the baseboard was on my roommates side of the room and she didn't see it there. Never the less to turn it on I had to reach behind a desk and the wall and couldn't see the thermostat or control etc. I'm guessing people don't bother because it was full of cobwebs. You get one set of sheets for the week. I change my sheets once a week at home so this shouldn't be a big deal but they were damp (because every damn thing was damp) and therefore it was not ideal. You are advised to bring your own towel which I did. There are no toiletries, but I never use them so I didn't care. The electricity is... I have no idea but when I did use a hairdryer which was twice it seemed like it was on low. The rug was full of stains. There were cob webs in the corners and did I mention it smelled like cat pee?!! I was attending an intensive program and subsequently the stress of my room made it very difficult to attend to learning from 9-6:30 daily. Because I was cold wet and smelled like urine.
The food was very good and the staff have to feed a large number or people daily so I give them a lot of credit. I do wish there were substantially more meat selections at meals. But perhaps this just goes with the territory. Never the less, it was a lot of carbs, rice, bread, gluten free bread, eggs and vegetables. There was fish one night I was there. I also had "chicken vegetable soup" one day and didn't find any chicken in the entire bowl. Maybe it was just chicken broth or chicken in spirit? The views of the ocean are beautiful and the meeting room was comfortable. Although you have to take your shoes off outside and if it is raining this is not ideal because your shoes get damp or wet outside and then you step on a wet mat going into and out of the room. Wet feet all day or for several days is very uncomfortable. You must have a flashlight. At night the grounds are minimally lit and you will be walking up and down a hill so unless you want to fall and crack your head open bring a flashlight. When it rains a river of water pours down the hill and you will want to avoid huge puddles and streams. There is zero cel phone service. ZERO. You can call no one. The wifi is limited and comes on during non-meal times in the lodge or dining hall. If you have anyone you need to be in touch with forget it. Despite wifi when I left town I had 15 phone calls that were missed and more text messages than I can count. There are no phones in the rooms. If you are dying or need help, I hope you have a whistle or can yell loudly because no one is coming to your aid. If you need any basic products, Motrin, tums, a tampon then you best be prepared to drive an hour to civilization or fashion something Macguyver style. There is a place to do laundry and you need quarters. If you aren't closely monitoring the dryer someone may take your clothes out throw them in a basket on the floor and use your time on the machine. If you need to do laundry do not go far from it. My things were taken out and thrown in a basket on the floor for a scarf and a thong that I imagine must have been in dire need of drying.
Be prepared for a lot of body odor. Bathing isn't a high priority for a lot of people staying at ESELAN or people who live there. I think that people who are visiting often wear the the same thing for multiple days, and in a damp environment, this just doesn't work.
While it may be worthwhile to visit for a specific workshop I would never stay on the premises again. The charge for the room considering the above is outrageous.

Dear Tilasmi,
I have wanted to be apart of Esalen Institute for over 25 years... and have a chance this next month! I will be in a 'work study' program... which means I pay $3000 for full accomodations for 4 weeks but in turn must work (kitchen, house cleaning, gardening) for 25 hours per week. What constructive advice would give me... since you had such a horrible experience I would like to be aware of the cracks
warmly Jacqueline R
have a blessed week
How much does a retreat or accommodation cost? Solo or for a couple? I am very interested
I am thinking about going to the hot springs 1 am - 3 am session. I am nervous on driving on HIghway 1 that late at night. I found a hotel that is 28 minutes north of the institute. Will it be safe to drive?

i only drove during the day... it was like the view of a roller coaster on sections.... night time may be easier without a moon glow on the ocean showing the roller coaster ride... following the highway lines in the dark with your headlights seems just as tantalizing as the day drive by my imagination... wish i could go on that drive with you and enjoy the 1 am hot spring.... mmmmmm

Hello Esalen staff,
After reading about mold and seeing the pictures, I am concerned. Is there reason to be concerned about mold or have you righted that situation?
Thank you,

Hi Christine,
I am not on staff at Esalen, but I did stay there. I booked a higher priced private room and it was mold free from what I could tell. It wasn't fancy but it was comfortable with a beautiful view of the ocean. Esalen is a very special place!

I'd check the reviews for all the Air BNB's, Bed and Breakfasts etc in the area. The area is magical - there are possibilities to stay in unexpected places.
