You'll begin by visiting a woodcarver's compound where generations of woodcarver's make impressive carvings both large and small. Here you will learn about the history of chicle (the sap gum is made of), see the trees that produce the sap, and learn about the rough and tumble chicleros who worked in the jungle collecting the sap. You will visit the community pool funded in part by funds from the tour, and hike through the woods where you will learn about the trees and plants used in healing and folk medicine. If you're lucky you may see the Toh birds with their beautiful, long tails who gather around the cenotes and were how the ancients knew a fresh water source was nearby. The cenote itself is breathtaking--an underground "fairyland" of ancient stalagmites that shimmer in the light and contain cool refreshing waters to swim in. Bring your camera! The day wraps up at a Mayan home where abuelita will teach you how to make fresh tortillas and where you will eat lunch. The children will steal your heart so bring pesos to buy the pictures they have made just for your visit. Other things to buy are wood carved items such mortars and pestles or wooden coasters from the wood carvers, and fresh honey or royal jelly face cream made from trees and plants from the region. This is a tour not to be missed. Highly recommended!…

The trip to the woodworker’s, walks in the jungle & cave were very interesting. The swim in the cenota was spectacular! We also enjoyed the meal prepared by Mayan families. Robin was not only knowledgeable, but made you feel like he was one of your best friends sharing what he loved about the area. We appreciated the snacks & water refills, but might have liked lunch a little earlier.…

So happy and grateful that we were able to experience this fantastic and unforgettable tour. Robin is fantastic and knows so much about Mexico and the Mayans. It's also so wonderful to see the bond he has with the Mayans and the way he helps them. If you want to experience the real Mexican and Mayan atmosphere, just do this tour. And the visit to the cenotes is breathtaking. If you don't have a place to stay yet, be sure to book a room at Layla Guesthouse. We had wonderful days there. I was with friends on a food tour, but this may have been one of the top experiences of that trip. We started our morning with breakfast at Layla then headed off with Robin for a day of learning about Mayan culture and their natural remedies before heading to a beautiful cenote, where we were provided with snorkels to explore. This is an amazing gem that you will not see when you travel to other parts of the world.…
