Wow, Robin & Paz were passionate and engaging guides. We learned about Mayan Culture, Yucatan history, Jungle Medicines, Cenote Geology, Master Wood Carvers, Local Cuisine, and they taught us basic Mayan language so we could engage more with the local village hosts. Even more impressive is the community building they are doing. They built a beautiful local Swimming Club for the village using Cenote water. The Cenote, Chooj-ha, is a photographer’s paradise, and a geologist’s theme park. The giant stalagmite formations, millions of years old, rising out of the hypnotizing turquoise waters, looked like fine sculptures, as if Mayan spirits may have offered a hand in their creation. For snorkelers or free divers, the underwater cathedral is even better than above. Depth ranges between 20 - 50 feet depending on the season, with plenty of cave extensions to test your curiosity. Robin & I discovered a 40’ underwater cave, at around 20’ depth, fairly easy to navigate for a practiced free diver with a good dive light. Found 50 pesos and a few black catfish inside. Underwater camera a must, I wish I planned for. Lunch with Grandma in her traditional kitchen, was fun & delicious. Village kids swarmed us after offering hand drawings at fair prices. Overall, these day tours can be exhausting, but we arrived back in Puerto Morelos full of excitement for what we just experienced. If you want an inspiring tour away from the tourist traps to do more than selfie & splash in a cenote, here you can also connect with Mayan culture like a Werner Herzog expedition. Hats off to Robin & Paz for curating such a lively, joyful, and educational day. With great respect, thank you to the beautiful & friendly Mayans for welcoming us with open arms, sharing your unique history and magic lands. We were honored to be your guest’s for a day. Joon Botik!

The tour is guided by the very enthusiastic and knowledgable guide/tour company owner Robin. The tour is worth every penny ! its actually worth more than the fee charged ....This is a true gem in all the tours offered around the area. The knowledge on history, culture ,language Robin exhibits is remarkable and the excitement he has sharing his knowledge makes this experience superb. The transportation is comfortable, plenty of stops for clean rest areas:) always a plus in my book ! The stop at the wood carver was so interesting and his work is amazing. The walk to the dry cave was such a wonderful lesson on plant and tree species and their medicinal qualities. The dry cave was gorgeous and offered a greta adventure.Who doesn't like caves ,right? The cenotes is a breathtaking site:) Absolutely gorgeous, an underground palace. What a hidden gem.The dinner experience with the Mayan family was delicious and the visit with them was humbling.Thank you Robin for a tour we won't forget anytime soon !!!!!!!!!! Keep up the great work you do :)

Our guides, Robin and Pas were awesome. They imparted a ton of really interesting knowledge about the Mayan culture, the history of the area, the cenotes, and the medicinal qualities of many plants and trees. And they were both really nice guys to spend a day with! Robin is my kind of businessman, he works hard to make the experience top notch for the customer, while also investing in the community in which he lives and works, in very positive ways.
The Cenote we went to was absolutely magical. I felt like I was in a Disney movie! The Mayan woodcutters compound was very inspiring and an interesting stop along the way. The Mayan meal was delightful and the people were warm and friendly.
Transportation was comfortable, the drivers were great and we felt safe at all times.
There were 20 people in our group (all part of a singing retreat). I'd go on this tour again, for sure! Thanks guys!

Having Robin as an amazing tour guide and knowing so many things about the trees, the land, the mayan history made this tour really special.
This cenote was truly spectacular and a dream. We also went into a dark cave with flashlights. Then we had a moment where we turned off all the flashlights and just sat in silence it was beautiful. For lunch we went to a Mayan family’s house. They welcomed us by showing us how to make tortillas and fed us with delicious food that they made in their kitchen. They also had a few handmade items that we were able to purchase. Lil purses and hair ties. I would def recommend this tour. The ride is a bit long but the company is not to be forgotten. We also stopped at a wood carving spot

Thank you for sharing your review of our tour here...it is so helpful for everyone involved. We really appreciate your time ! As guests on the tour you do indeed learn a lot about the medicinal plants of the Maya...and our guide Paz not only comes from that tradition in his family...but also studied and studies a lot to share more with the visitors.... You are right, the lunch with the Mayan family in their home is unforgettable...both for taste as well experience. That cenote blows my mind every time I go there...now over 200 times.... !!! Thanks for the THUMBS UP !!

If you want an authentic full day out rather than following the masses then this the trip for you. Starting off from the beautiful, quirky, friendly Layla Guest House and in the company of Robin, the perfect, knowledgable and wonderful guide, this trip will take you through Mayan history as we know it and along the way will surprise and delight you. With visits to an incredible woodcarvers yard, showcasing generations of skilled carvers and ending with lunch ( a late lunch be warned) at an authentic Mayan family house.
Incredible as it is, that’s not the highlight by any means. During the day you will see typical Mexican villages and an insight into how Mexico is outside the tourist areas, all with a running commentary from Robin.
The highlight of the day without doubt is a short walk through the jungle and a visit to a ‘dry’ cave. Along the way you will learn all about the fauna and flora and the medicinal qualities of every plant! What can kill you and what can save you. But the best is kept to the end.
The cenote is absolutely jaw dropping. This isn’t a place where 200 people will pile into from coaches, this is a beautiful underground experience with few if any will share with you. This will take your breath away and the chance to swim in the waters is an opportunity not to be missed. An awe inspiring experience guided by a funny, likeable and incredibly interesting man.
Yes you stop at different sites but this isn’t the normal experience of people trying to wring you for money. You never feel under pressure to spend a single dollar/ peso/ pound. This isn’t your normal commercial sell. This is somebody guiding you around Mayan history and showcasing the most incredible geological history. Someone who cares and knows his stuff.
If you want to learn about the history of the area, about the Mayan culture, see awe inspiring natural geology ( nothing I say can get you ready for what you see) , have fun, feel safe, eat and be involved in the preparation of Mayan food and be in the company of a true font of knowledge, which is what Robin is, then this is the tour for you. I’m not uploading pics as I don’t want to spoil the surprises.
You will end the day looking back through your photos wondering if you actually experienced what you experienced. Oh and when you arrive back at ‘Layla’ spend some time there, eat the food, but that’s for another review!!

This adventure was seamless from start to finish.
Robin drove our small group and began giving us history lessons about the area and the original Mayan inhabitants right away. He made it truly fascinating and was open to all kinds of questions and knew so much! We even got tutored on the unique language! (Thank goodness because 80% of the people living in the Yucatan still speak a dialect of Maya.)
We stopped at a local wood-carving farm where we saw incredible furniture and decor being created on the site. From there we continued on to a "jungle hike." This was more of a walk through the native plant life on our way to the Cenote, all the while being offered information on types of trees, leaves, and also their medicinal uses.
After that, we climbed into a cave and learned about stalagmites and rock formations and a deluge of other incredible facts. This was really exciting—it was not claustrophobic for me at all —even though in the past I might have been trepidatious about entering a cave. Robin made us feel safe and it was truly mesmerizing and fun!
Then came the Cenote. There are tons of Cenotes in that area of the country. This one was called Cho Ha (meaning falling water); it was uncrowded and a secret gem. We snorkeled (the equipment was excellent), and saw amazing rock formations under the clear water as well as some catfish lol.
After our swim, we had the opportunity to take a quick outdoor shower and change into dry clothes for the next portion of our tour. We went to a local home where we were taught (and made!) our own tortillas from homemade masa. We then were seated in the yard and served about four courses of authentic Mayan dishes. Each one was more delicious than the next.
This was a day full of unforgettable experiences. Robin is so easy going and loves to laugh; this became contagious. For me, there's nothing better than learning with joy.
I HIGHLY recommend this tour!

Our group of 16 had such an incredible day with Robin and Paz. You know it's good when your 16 year old nephew tells you mid tour "Thank you so much for bringing me on this.". From start to finish, every experience (woodworking village, community pool, jungle walk, cave, cenote, lunch in a Mayan home) was unique, educational, and intentional. I was very concerned about all the driving, especially with 9 kids ages 10-18 in tow. It was a long day - more than 13 hours from start to finish, but I did not hear a single complaint. We were in 2 vans. Robin and Paz kept things interesting teaching us Mayan words, talking about the culture and our surroundings the entire time. We never felt rushed and they really helped look out for my 75 year old mother and 15 year old with special needs when we were on the cave tour and at the cenote. By the end of the trip, we felt more like family sharing hugs all around. I asked my 12 year old son - "What was the best part of your day?" Without hesitation, "Robin!". Seeing Robin interact with the locals, especially the children, you can tell how loved he is and how much he truly cares for this community. Afterwards, my 18 year old nephew was trying to figure out how to write his first Trip Advisor review he had such an amazing time. If you are looking for an off the beaten path opportunity to learn about the Mayan culture and experience the beautiful surroundings, look no further!

Many thanks for your review !! It was such fun to read about all the family reactions to the day, comments from all ages. I agree this is a wonderful family activity filled with amazing nature as a backdrop for timeless family memories.... Just to be clear about timing, the tour leaves Cafe Layla around 8:30am and returns about 6pm. Thanks again for your joyous group and kind support of the families along the way !

Where do I even begin? This was one of the best day trip/excursions I have ever been on. It was packed full of so many experiences! Our guide, Robin, was so knowledgeable about the environment and wildlife, it was quite amazing. Anyone can walk through the woods (actually the jungle) and admire it's beauty, but he told us so many names of the plants, trees, insects, etc. it was remarkable. We met with local wood working artists, learned all about stalagmites and stalactites in a dry cave, swam in a glorious cenote and had the pleasure of making home made corn tortillas right next to the sweetest little Mayan grandmother. We ate traditional Mayan food right in their home and had the delight of purchasing some of the local Mayan children's artwork/handicrafts. Robin taught us a little Mayan language which was fun during our trip to the Yucatan, but I actually used it throughout the rest of my trip. I highly recommend this tour, and I plan on doing the follow-up tour on my next trip to Puerto Morelos.

This has been the highlight of our trip to Puerto Morelos. It is a fun and varied experience that brings together culture, history, food, community involvement and a refreshing swim in a breathtakingly beautiful cenote. Robin has an immense knowledge of local history, healing plants and Mayan culture that he shares with enthusiasm and humor. His respect for and involvement with the Mayan people here offered us a lovely insight into the community and helped us feel welcome, especially with a few words of Mayan that he taught us. An unforgettable day that we will repeat on our next trip.

Robin sets up a wonderful multi-stop excursion covering local artistry, plant life, cenotes and a Mayan lunch. He is very knowledgeable about the many jungle plants used for medicinal and healing purposes as well as Mayan life in general. The cenote we visited is absolutely beautiful and unspoiled. Don't expect zip lines and ATVs. This is a natural history excursion, so if it is adrenalin you are looking for, do not sign up for this tour. It is small group tour for a very personal experience. The Mayan lunch provided might not appeal to everyone, but Robin does have water and snacks. There is a lot of driving involved, so be prepared for a long day. Robin and his partner are very much involved and giving back to the communities that they visit. Highly rcommend.

Thank you for your recommendation !! I suggest our Xcan Extreme tour on your next visit which includes entry to the Cenote by way of a 6-story ladder ! Not to worry - you are roped in....and the cave we visit was a Maya burial site with bones from...? There fist stop at a local charming Geological Cultural Museum with meteorites and million-year one rocks ! Fascinating.....

I have a bad knee. Stairs are difficult. I Really want to swim in a cenote! Does this one have alot of stairs? Thank you!
Written August 24, 2020
There are about 15 stairs down into the dry cave, and roughly 25 down into the cenote -- all with handrails. There is not rush so I think you would find it worth the difficulty to experience that incredible timeless beauty.

My wife and I have both have Celiac Disease (dietary restriction=no wheat, rye, barley). This experience looks amazing but we are concerned about the Yucatecan Lunch. Could I dietary restriction be accommodated?

HI and thanks for your question. The first course is all corn tortillas, cheese, pumpkin seed, tomato, and the second is onion, chick peas, garlic, pork and chicken..... I think we can say this is gluten-free..... For vegetarians, we can easily replace the second course meat with a yummy veggie soup..... Hope this helps all interested in the meal details....

Hola ! Thank you for your interest in our tour. The day includes a 1.5hour van ride....a 15-min walk in the jungle talking about medicinal plants - add another 15 min of talk time, a dry cave exploration, and then the swim in the big cathedral-like cenote....then lunch with a Mayan family. How do you see your kids experiencing all that ? The three-year old ...? Would you carry her on the walk ? Someone could wait with her at the cenote and skip the walk.....join the swim and the lunch is fun for all ages...so just the van-ride to consider.... You know them best...lemme know !

Hi there, NOW SAPPHIRE is about a 10-min taxi ride from Puerto Morelos main square. Layla is 300 yards south of that square along the beachfront road...across from the high school. It is possible we can drop you back after the tour for less than the taxi ride, we would just speak with the van driver who is with the union as well.... the taxi union prevents us from any pick-ups in the hotel. It is a great day off the coast and into the modern Mayan world....! Hope to see you on the tour !

This sounds wonderful! We will be there in JUne. How strenuous/physical is the tour? Thanks
Written February 6, 2016
It requires a fair amount of walking, some of it up and down rocky slopes into and out of the caves. The paths through the jungle are flat, but uneven. There were two of us on the tour that had some mobility issues, but we managed the caves with a little help. There were several locals in each cave who were there to assist, and that made a big difference.
