An incredible view for the pilgrims
Aug 2015
The Sanctuary is erected on Monte Figonia, approx 800 meter high and approx. 4km far from the coast of Genoa. Tanks to its position it is possible to enjoy an incredible view that spans from the Portofino Promontory on the East to Genoa to the western cost of Liguria. The Sanctuary was built by the Genoises to permanently witness their devotion to the Virgin Mary who is said to have appeared to a shepherd. During the years devoted Genoises used to ask the Virgin for health, for overcoming difficult times or for thanking her for their fortunes having escaped an incident, an illness or a terrible event. Stories of the Virgin protecting the Genoises are going back to beginning of 20 century and can be found in the ex voto rooms in the Sanctuary. Typically people willing to solicit the help or willing to thank Mary for the help received are going to the sanctuary walking the steep climb to the top, and, you can see also people having exceeded their 70s to walk up there via the old route in the woods taking even half a day to get up there. Recently the restaurants around the Sanctuary become a bit low quality, but you can find many others a bit below the top in the Ceranesi area. I went there by Mountain Bike via the old Guidovia, a dismissed tram road that was used to get to the top up to the sixties and now a Mtb paradise. Search on the web for Guidovia and Mtb , you will find it. A mystic place and great view of the Ligurian Sea. Go for it!

When I first visited this Shrine of the Nostra Senora Della Guardia , located at the mountaintop in Ceranesi Italy, I promised myself that I would return again, each time I am in Italy. I have visited this Church for about 5 times . My last visit here last May 2014. They have a mini museum where testimonials and pictures of all sorts of miracles and survivors of accidents and sickness are displayed. Unfortunately when we were there last May , the exhibit hall was beinbg renovated for the feast day in August. From the Genoa Principe main train station , one must take a local train to Bolzaneto, then get a taxi ride up to the shrine. It takes about 25 - 30 minutes to ascend, depending on the weather condition and speed . There are small restaurants in the cathedral . There is a souvenir shop outside of the church where one can buy the metal hearts. These metal hearts, as the legend goes, whenever possible , be returned to the church with the testimonial of the everyday miracles the faithful . Difficult to visit during winter, but it is lovely during autumn and spring. I have yet to visit during summer.
