Being partly a local and yet partly a tourist I can highly recommend you downloading maps.me app in order to complete this hike safely. The mountain doesn't seem to be that high and tough to get to the top, however, the surrounding forest and an enormous number of misleading paths may bring you to some other places other than top. So navigation is a MUST have when going there without a local guide/ hiking experience/ clue about the place. You can start this hike as in Pyatigorsk as in some other towns nearby but whatever you choose make sure to bring some wind-proof jacket, a buff, and shoese with non-slippery soles. Hiking poles are optional but might be extremely helpful on the way down espesially when the ground is wet (spring/autumn). I definitely do not recommend you going there alone in winter time when it's all covered by snow because you can easily get lost there. Actually finding a local guide is always a great option so that you try different paths on the way up and down, get to know some cool facts about the area, and just feel confident. Good luck everyone!

Great day hike to the top - Amazing views
Mar 2018 • Friends
Definitely spend a day or 1/2 day hiking up Beshtau if you have the chance! The views from the top are spectacular if its clear, including seeing Elbrus and the Caucasus Mountain range.

The best route up in my opinion is from Zheleznovodsk, through the old train station. That trail is wide and very beautiful through the woods. The quickest way down is towards Lermontov on the other side. I don't recommend hiking there by foot from Pyatigorsk, it's very long and the trail is dangerous at points.

It gets VERY cold and windy at the top, so come prepared! I have on average gotten to the top in 2.5 hours at a decent pace. Enjoy!
