This wetland nature reserve is a serene and rewarding place to visit for gentle walking or cycling along the scenic riverside tracks. I stayed at the Ecoturismo Tevere Farfa right in the heart of the reserve where you can hire bikes, arrange for picnics and eat homemade organic meals. The riverside walks benefit from wooden hides for birdspotting: egrets, heron, ducks and otters are all regularly seen on the calm waters.

Easy to get to from Rome: just take the train to Poggio Mirteto (you can get there direct from Fiumicino airport in about 90 minutes) or drive to Nazzano.

I thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The nature reserve is a perfect place to take the bike and go out on a trip spotting some wildlife. I couldn't believe it when I saw some boar swimming across the rivers. If it wasn't for their grunting at the time the location is perfectly peaceful. You've got to try the food at the weekends at the local family run guesthouse and resturant called 'Tevere Farfa' too. Incredible food, especially the tiramisu

Yet I really like the atmosphere that reigns in the oldest of the natural reserves of Lazio, now a beautiful 45 years old, a little worn by time also because of those funds that do not arrive to rearrange it a little (and also the time of pandemic did not allow, for example, the replacement of the old walkways that are rightly complained about: of European funds not spent and returned to Brussels, Federico, the boatman, tells me). In this regard, I recommend the boat trip on the Tiber (there are two, with little environmental impact, €7 and lasting about an hour) which allows good bird-watching on the "river path", a of a different view from that of the huts. And then a look at the Sabelli castle which dominates the river in Nazzano and the steep walls of the Ripa Bianca, which bears the fossil signs of what the sea was here in the Pliocene.

Simply fantastic natural place!! Today we explored the Tiber with a nice boat ride (which I highly recommend doing) with the attentive and scrupulous guide, who enchanted us and carefully explained a bit of history with related explanation on which species of fauna live in this river !!!

A route along the Tiber that surprises you along the entire route. Path suitable for walking and cycling, for all ages without problems.

Here I am for the umpteenth time to review this beautiful place! I have to say that every time the situation gets worse. What amazes me is that I found the wooden walkway practically destroyed and impassable! What a shame indeed! But since it is a beautiful place where many people go walking, why not make the most of it! There are audio stations that are activated as you pass by, there are tools to keep physically fit, and then the wooden walkway practically swallowed up by nature! Fallen trees, rotten wood, and missing pieces make everything impracticable! What a pity. However, everything else is as good as always! Happy walking to you, not on the wooden walkway for sure, TripAdvisor people.
