I really enjoy the several hours spent in this Abbey. Established in 668 it has experienced many reincarnations. The quiet is encompassing. I was able to stroll the grounds on my own for a bit and it felt like the buildings absorbed all the sounds....More

Our tour visited the abbey and for me, it was a highlight of my entire trip! A charming and energetic monk hosted our visit and through an interpreter, explained the history of this centuries old Benedictine abbey. We also attended a Mass where the monks...More

St-Wandrille is a very peaceful and spiritual place - a working Benedictine Abbey in the throes of significant restoration. It is only possible to visit some of the property, but the old abbey (where restoration of just one arch window takes one year) is fabulous....More

I and my wife have been here during our Summer 2018 Normandy’s tour. We passed by while moving from Rouen and Fecamp, thus we decided to stop and take a look. The whole site and in particular the Abbaye look mighty but now it is...More

In mid-June 2018, we travelled by bus from Caudebec en Caux, France (where our Vantage river cruise ship was docked) to Saint Wandrille to tour this abbey. Allot of the buildings are under renovation and because this is a working monastery, you are only allowed...More

We were treated to a very up close and personal tour of the Abbey and grounds. A surprising fact about this place is that all inhabitants contribute financially to the monastery by practising a craft, like brewing beer! Beer is one of this monastery's income...More

It is a very special, beautiful abbey - Benedictine. It is a working abbey, so not all of it is open to the public, unless you want to go on a retreat. Worth a diversion

What an interesting place this is. It is a working Benedictine monastery where the monks live in silence. We were shown round by a tubby, jolly little friar, frère Lucien. He told us about his life at the monastery, where they do picture restoration and...More

This is a very interesting site. The monks make beer and do art restoration. A very interesting combination and if the artists also work in the brewery, the restoration could suffer! Fortunately, they are only allowed to drink on Sundays. The buildings are from various...More

As part of our “Normandy Abbeys Route” excursion, we visited the Fontenelle Abbey, a 7th century working monastery with renovations in progress. We were told that if we were lucky, we could hear the monks chanting, but that was not our case. We did, however,...More
