We visited some longtime friends who have lived in Chapala for about 7 years. They took us to all the usual visitor attractions in the northern Lake Chapala area. The Chapala Plaza and the Malecon were very nice and relaxing experiences.

The Chapala Plaza is the heart of the town. Its space is often occupied by local events, craft shows, and even the occasional sale of eye glasses. The Plaza is home to the Mercado where you will find a variety of restaurants, butcher shops, roasted...More

Compared to years past the plaza in front of the indoor market is much improved. Still, it has some negative issues. Removing the plaza vendors opened up space to feel less crowded. It is cleaner, but stray dogs abound. As far as the central kiosk...More

Chapala's malecon is great any day of the week. Spotless with a welcoming fountain, scenic pier, boat rides, nicely landscaped, artisan booths (I got several nice belts), and restaurants.

Having undergone a renovation in the last 2 years, this plaza is a cool and safe place to just hang out and have an ice cream and do some people watch.

Come to Chapala plaza to sit and people watch, do some shopping for meat, fish or fruits and veggies. Grab a bite to eat. Just enjoy the center of town.

Not the most beautiful plaza we saw in Mexico BUT we truly enjoyed the entertainment provided by a local amateur brass band. Apparently they play every Sunday evening. And they are good! The next evening we enjoyed a group of young locals dancing to the...More

A nice place for a quick sit down and lots of people watching. The mood is pretty laid back here. Further back from the lake there are some impressive homes. We were told Chapala has a huge expat community. The number of expensive looking homes...More

For the most part we do not swim in the lake. There are hotels where you can swim.
