I’ve only ridden a few times, but the horse selected for me was easy to handle, gentle, not too bossy and not intimidating. 😉 The trail through the hills provides gorgeous views down to the lake. Our guides were knowledgeable about the trails and the surrounding area. The selection of riding boots was plentiful. After the ride, Stephanie spent another hour with us showing us around the ranch, talking about her horses and other critters, her faithful rescue dog that never leaves her side, how she has developed the ranch over the years and provided us a ride back into Chapala. This experience makes me want to do another trail ride at Rancho San Francisco!

Yesterday I joined my new Scottish friends visiting their sister and aunt, Kay, also from Scotland, who had booked this horse riding tour at Stephanie Decker’s Ranch!! I was so happy because I have wanted to do this since I heard about it 3 years ago! I want to say thank you to Stephanie and Carlos, her Trail Boss Ali, and all of her beautiful, sweet horses, for the perfect 2 hours riding the trails above Lake Chapala!! We are all novices, to say the least, but we were given constant guidance and gentle, direct and timely instruction by her skilled Team of 3. Her Rancho is absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and the gorgeous horses were running, romping and playing in their pastures while we enjoyed meeting her pet pig and giving him his favorite ham slaps! It is a wonderful trip for anyone to take, tourists or residents!!

My husband and I visited Rancho San Francisco in July and our trail ride was definitely a Mexican highlight. These are NOT head to tail, barn-sour nags you find on most commercial trail rides. These are well-bred, wonderfully cared for, responsive, gentle, trained riding horses trained to do trail riding. I try to go riding whenever on vacation and these are the best trail horses I have ever ridden. The gear used is very professional with riding boots and helmets available if needed, along with a nice pad on the saddle to create some cushion. The ride itself wends it way on cobbled country roads, and on dirt and rocky trails through forests of small trees, up into the hills, through ravines, and near small reservoirs. The views of Lake Chapala and the mountains are spectacular. Carlos the handler and Stephanie the owner are very knowledgeable about the the area and give expert advice and riding tips if needed. If you come, plan to stay a little bit and look at and feed some of the animals. My favorites? A very fat friendly squirrel and even fatter pot-bellied pig. A definite MUST activity if you visit Lake Chapala.

What a way to experience real Mexico! I had a delightful morning ride with Carlos in the mountains, on a beautiful pinto horse, Scout. Thanks to Stephanie for providing the opportunity and locale for such a memorable time! Looking forward to returning to the rancho for more rides in the future. Muchas gracias, Stephanie and Carlos!

A great family outing. We were all three novices with one first time teenage rider. Stephanie accurately judged our excitement/nervousness in picking the horses and we had a wonderful excursion, enjoying the bird life some "wild 'horses on the trails and of course the menagerie of animals back on the ranch. I'll be bringing all my visitors here. It's a very peaceful way to enjoy the views. Thank you. Couldn't have been better/
