Impressively set on top of a hill, the building itself is only about 100 years old after an earthquake destroyed the original monastery. It's 300rps to enter and you can then walk around the interior even during a service. Usual rules, no bare legs, no talking and no taking photos even with a phone. You can sit at the back and observe a service if you wish

Tengboche Monastery is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Everest region of Nepal. The monastery is surrounded by the majestic Himalayan peaks and the view is absolutely breathtaking. The architecture of the monastery is stunning and the intricate artwork and decorations inside are truly awe-inspiring. I had the opportunity to attend one of the prayer ceremonies and it was a spiritual experience like no other. The monks were welcoming and friendly, and it was an honor to witness their way of life. Overall, Tengboche Monastery is a peaceful and serene place that I highly recommend visiting.

When we reached Tengboche, we visited the monastery in the evening. It is a big monastery. The architecture is nice and the surroundings are awesome. When we visited, the prayers were going on. The atmosphere that those prayers created was really wonderful. The setup inside was divine.
One should visit while on the way to EBC.

Set in a small plateau of Tengboche is this 100 year old monaster. It's one of the the most beautiful places in the world. Surrounded by mountains, it has a strangely mystical and out of place appearance that accentuates the beautiful Tibetan Architecture.

For me it was a half way stop between Namche and Pangbouche but it is a beautiful place and well worth the stop. It is though extremely cold but the views are spectacular and make sure you turn the prayer wheels or get a blessing as you are going to need it as from there that’s where the altitude really starts to kick in. At least that’s what I found

this monastery is very well preserved, the paintings are all so beautiful, the statues gives u that sense of peace when you look into the eyes.
the monks there are all so nice and they allowed the visitors stay a little inside in meditation.
light a candle, make your prayers, be thankful for all the graces you had!
the last possible time to visit is 4h30 pm, after this they close for visitors and in the morning, the ceremony is around 7am.

Climbing up to EBC, we made haste to get to Tengboche so that we would not miss the daily Buddhist prayers (done twice a day, morning and afternoon). We made it to the hotel, cooled off, then went for a very spiritual afternoon in the temple. The monks had tourists all around the temple but never missed a beat in their chanting. It was moving and quite awe-inspiring.
Inside the temple no photography is allowed. The temple is decorated with many interesting pieces of artwork, instruments, and signage. The drums are (believe it or not) actually made from stretched human skin, and some of the instruments are carved from human bones. Call to prayer is done with a conch.
From the gateway into the temple one can see Mt. Everest in all of her glory.

I timed my EBC trek to see the Mani Rimdu festival, which is held on the full moon at the end of October. The procession on the blessing day and the full day Mask dances were great. However, I would say that when the monks do the humorous segment after lunch leave and come back at the end of the day for hte final set of mask dances. I was lucky and able to attend a religious service in the monestary in the morning that was fantastic. It is something I will never forget.

Hi there, I am heading to Nepal in the fall of 2016 (october) and want to spend some time at Tengboche just to retear from the world and ideally join the monastary routine of meditation/chanting and so on for a short stay (week or two). Can anyone help me out with info? Can I just trek up ? Can I stay at the monastary for a time?
I really hope to hear back, thanks,
