About
Come and explore our hidden gem on The West Coast. In one of the largest unmodified caves in New Zealand, we have two very special tours to offer. The cave adventure itself includes indulging yourself in an abundance of underworld treasures such as stalactites and stalagmites and learning the history of the cave until the most spectacular part of the adventure. The glow worms. When choosing your tour you can choose the Underworld Rafting option, here you float under the Worlds best display of glow worms and float down the river, or you can go on the scenic tour and visit the largest opening on the cave and discover the beautiful galaxies of glow worms on a drier part of the cave. But if your not looking to go caving... Come and join us on our Nile River Rain Forest Train ride that takes you in and out of the Karst Valley with an interpretive description of the history of Charleston

We had the glowworm walk/caving experience (dry walk). We had an active 8 year old through to a 64 year old who is comfortable with flat walks and a bit of an incline. Everyone absolutely had a blast. Left around 10am, back by 2.30 in the end. Tess was out guide and knew the answer to every question, talked us through the tricky bits (there def are some, thing flights of rock stairs in the dark that you have to duck to enter…) and was so lovely and chatty the entire time. She took us through a wonderful experience and was just incredible. Thankyou Tess!
Don’t forget to go to the loo first (nowhere to go in the caves) and dress for a chilly bush walk, it’s 11 degrees inside the caves. We took a snack and drink bottles which was good.

Amazing guide and amazing cave. No rush and genuine passion about the subject. Took their time to show extra things and explain everything.

This was one of our most memorable adventures on the island. If you are on the west coast be sure not to miss this. Do the full train + cave + rafting trip - it's 100% worth it. Hiking through the caves was an amazing exerpeince in itself, but the glowworm "galaxy" was unbelievable and will blow you away.

We are from NZ and this would be one of the best NZ activities we have done. Tess our guide was knowledgeable and fun. The experience was truly NZ, not all rules ,regulations and super safety. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a uniquely NZ half day caving activity.

One of the coolest experiences of our trip! Each part is amazing on it's own, but when you add them all together....simply outstanding. Their location is easy to find to start your adventure, getting outfitted in the wetsuit was quick and easy, a quick safety briefing and group photo and we were on our way. The little train to take you to the trail head reminded us a lot of Mr Rogers Neighborhood, a lovely hike followed thankfully not hindered too much by the wetsuit or the inner tube we were then carrying. A brief bit of history and some more photos at the mouth of the cave and off we went in small groups into the cave. The stalagmites, stalactites, and natural rock formations of the cave were gorgeous. After some time we reach the water where the guide puts each small group on their inner tubes and "chains" us together feet to shoulders, with the guide at the top of the chain steering us. I've heard the ceilings of glowworm caves look like a bit like the night sky, this felt more like the night sky in a Disney movie! Sadly this portion went by faster than I would have liked (honestly, I could have stayed there for HOURS), but then we got to ride the inner tubes down the river back to the trail head offering a different view of the beautiful forest we had hiked earlier. Once back at base camp we had the opportunity to take a hot shower while they made us a little booklet with a group and individual photo. The guides all had Go Pro's and took plenty of photos that are available for download. However, this was the first time I wish I had one to take my own photos. One final note, do NOT miss out on the pies at the cafe inside basecamp....easily some of the best we had the entire trip!

This was such a an amazing experience! You start with a train ride through a beautiful rainforest. Then a short hike to the entrance of a huge limestone cave. A super knowledgeable guide takes you through and shows you the stunning stalactite and stalagmite structures and explains how they are formed. Then you head down to the river through the middle of the cave to the show stopper- the glowworms. On a nice easy float in an inner tube you stare in amazement at galaxies comprised of glowworms. If you think you've already seen them on a hike in a rainforest, you're mistaken. The sheer concentration of them in the cave is like nothing I've seen anywhere else. At the end of the cave float you go on a fun ride through some rapids on an open river and climb back on the train to finish the experience. Absolutely book this excursion.

Beautiful trek through rugged terrain: a short train ride, then hiking through the rain forest, caving on a narrow trail complete with beautiful stalagmites, stalactites and glow worms galore. Several rooms of glorious natural formations that boggle the mind. Millions of glow worms look like the Milky Way, but brighter, as you relax back on your tube through the very last part of the cave. Climb out of the cave and jump into the river and tube down a short river segment. Wetsuits from feet to neck including gloves are provided to keep you warm, and protected but that hot shower when you get back to base sure feels good.
Liana our guide was fantastic, you could tell she loved her job.
This is a workout and they make it clear that you need to be in decent shape to do it. Believe them. I’m 65, this and bungy jumping were highlights of this trip to NZ. This was way more work than jumping off a bridge, but I have a great sense of accomplishment and awe for experience Liana provided us. Thank you!

Fantastic, friendly staff providing a truely memorable experience. Fun train ride up to the caves followed by a very interesting and visually stunning journey viewing the cave system and its variety of stalactites and stalagmites. This was followed by an incredible rubber ring ride floating down the cave river staring up at a ceiling covered with gloworms with our head torches off, truely memorable. The final journey down the river rapids on the rings topped it all off.
Can't recommend enough.

This would have to be one of the best, exciting and amazing things we have done in a long time. We did the caving, glow-worms and tube rafting option and were so glad we did. The glow-worms were out of this world and slowly gliding on a rubber tube underneath them let you see them in all their glory. Yes, it was a bit of work to get there in a wetsuit and carrying the rubber tube but I am in my late 60's and managed no worries. The staff are terrific, from the moment you walk in till your return and they ensure your safety is their highest priority. They even supply free photos of your trip to download. I recommend anyone visiting the north-west coast of NZ's south island to put this on their bucket list.
