About
Come and explore our hidden gem on The West Coast. In one of the largest unmodified caves in New Zealand, we have two very special tours to offer. The cave adventure itself includes indulging yourself in an abundance of underworld treasures such as stalactites and stalagmites and learning the history of the cave until the most spectacular part of the adventure. The glow worms. When choosing your tour you can choose the Underworld Rafting option, here you float under the Worlds best display of glow worms and float down the river, or you can go on the scenic tour and visit the largest opening on the cave and discover the beautiful galaxies of glow worms on a drier part of the cave. But if your not looking to go caving... Come and join us on our Nile River Rain Forest Train ride that takes you in and out of the Karst Valley with an interpretive description of the history of Charleston

This was THE highlight of our West Coast Adventure. Our group of 4 (mum, dad, teen son and Nana 74 years) had the best time ever! Had no idea where Charleston was and it was worth the time to google things to do. From the moment we arrived we were in great hands. The ever so patient Liana was a wealth of knowledge, safety and just a very nice young lady. She took our group on the tour. Started getting into wetsuits - that was a laugh, but they have all the gear, jackets, helmet, head torch, gloves, socks and boots. First up was a trip in the van to the small train "Dorothy" and it was a nice trip through the bush. Liana had a camera and took all the photos for us and gave us great stories and explanations in the cave we felt very safe and I learnt a lot! Next we picked up our tubes and headed on a small bush walk to the stairs...Nana made it up them eventually and Liana was so patient we really appreciated it. The caves were amazing and Liana told us what the names of the formations were and it was way better than I had thought. Then we got to the water and she towed us like a train of tubes.. to the glow worms - well that was incredible and a wow moment, then it was the rafting down the nile river trying hard not to get spanked by the rocks, just an amazing day atleast 4 hours and well worth the money spent to see and learn so much and really enjoyed by all. The photos are given to you at the end which is incredible and a great service. Highly recommend doing this. Nana loved it even though she was slow it was one of the best things she's done. Im not keen on dark small spaces, but never felt worried at all and too busy being amazed. Beautiful nz at its best. Thanks Liana you rock!

Best experience led by Kylie, who was able to provide and inform us of so much within the cave as well as local area. Scenery both inside and outside the caves was incredible, we learnt a lot and had SO much fun. I get a little claustrophobic but Kylie put me at ease and I felt so safe. The photos provided at the end were an absolute bonus - worth the (very reasonable) price and would recommend this tour to anyone travelling the West Coast as an absolute must.

An amazing tour of the caves and so unlike many others, as the caves are viewed in their natural state. ie no man made paths or lighting (you wear a hard hat with a light on it). The tour starts with a most enjoyable ride on a little train into the bush, and then a short walk to one of the cave's entrances.

Tips: make sure you have a good breakfast as the tour took around 4 hrs in total. Take water to drink and wear good walking shoes, as you are walking over the limestone floor which can be a bit slippery. Wear warm clothes, though the temp in the caves was a constant 11 degrees c. A degree of fitness does make this tour more enjoyable.

The other couple in our tour were going black water rafting which seemed a lot of fun too.

Really recommend you go while there are not lots of overseas tourists, as the smaller groups made the tour more personable and quicker to move through the cave.

Yes! We miss our overseas visitors, but we're loving the smaller groups and showing off our backyard a bit more to our fellow Kiwis ;-)

This was one of my husband and my FAVORITE things we did on our trip to NZ! We did the Underworld Combo of Underworld Rafting and Adventure Caving and cannot recommend it more! Such a good deal! You can book both for $490nzd per adult. They take your photos for you so you don't need to worry about trying to bring a camera. You start the day taking a little train through the forest and going down into the caves and black water rafting through to see the glowworms. A really good experience and very informative. Then after lunch you go back out to a much more adventurous caving experience where you abseil (repel) 130 feet into the cave and do a more self guided caving tour. Mira was awesome and taught us how to navigate caves on our own. It was some true spelunking. She told us how to find our own way out of the cave and then let us adventure through the cave and be the leader to find the way back out. The adventure caving is definitely more adrenaline packed and not for the claustrophobic. You have to go through holes, tunnels, skinny crevices and waterfalls. SO MUCH FUN! But then again I love a good adventure. Whatever you choose to do, you will have an amazing time! MUST DO!

Never experienced anything like this.
The train trip in Cecil through unspoilt beauty was one thing but once inside the Metro cave was on another level.
Andrea, our guide's passion for this treasure was reflected in her intimate knowledge of all areas of the cave right down to naming images in the formations.
Due to minimal interference from man, this is one gorgeous cave in it's raw beautiful state.
Never had such a satisfying experience and entry price of $120.00 is well worth it.
Can highly recommend.

We really enjoyed this adventure, and highly recommend you make room for it on your West Coast New Zealand itinerary. The caves were incredible, and we especially loved seeing the glowworms while floating on our backs in the river. We visited in December and it was cold, especially during the river float at the end! You will wear wetsuits but they don't necessarily keep you warm. Our guide truly made the experience. I forget his name, but he was funny and quirky and great with kids. I really appreciated that the company makes photos of your experience available at no extra charge.

One of the best thing's we've ever done as a family activity wise. Absolutely superb! The staff are excellent, making it a really really fun experience. I see one recent review mentioned being claustrophobic and if they had know you had to crawl, they would not have done it. I disagree. I am mildly claustrophobic and I had zero issues with this whatsoever. There are a few moments where you have to bend to get through but it's only for mere moments, then it opens back up. The video on their website actually shows the extent of the bending - something I watched twice to be sure I would be ok.
I thoroughly recommend this trip, it's excellent value for money, lasting nearly 5hrs. It's informative, a laugh, you get to ride on a little train, do a lovely walk through the bush, get an extensive look inside a cave, see an unbelievable display of millions of glowworms, and end the entire thing with a ride down the river on your tube. It's a wonderful experience.

Much better than I was prepared for. Enjoyed every aspect of the trip from the train ride through to hunching over in the caves and finding out a bunch of information presented in an engaging manner.

The float through the cave was simply stunning; the lights, the silence and the pull of the current made for an experience beyond that promised.

The guide was knowledgeable without being intrusive and a delight.

Beautiful native bush and scenery and an excellent commentary made the train trip into the rainforest highly worth doing. My wheelchair went into a special carriage with a wider door and when the train stopped, my husband was able to push me in my chair part of the way along the path. The trip was a great way for me to enjoy the magnificent NZ native rainforest.

I remember when you came through with us - just wonderful to share our little slice of paradise with you, and we really appreciate the positive feedback. We don't get too many people in wheelchairs joining us, but just lovely to know we can make it work for you!

This was another trip I did with great value for money. Mini train ride through forest and a cave exploration. Probably only scored 4 as I opted to do the walk only and not the tubing.
The guide had a lot of knowledge although I felt she lacked passion and personality.
The far entrance to cave was like something out of a movie against the back drop of mist and forest and the glow worms were spectacular.

Thanks for your review. It is a spectacular environment down there underground, and it's amazing to see such a "real" cave in the flesh. Many thanks for your comments regarding your guide - we strive for the personal approach, so I appreciate hearing back that we missed the mark on your particular day. It gives me the opportunity to continually improve the overall experience, so thank you for your honesty!
