If you to see lions, elephant etc this is not the place to go. This zoo in small and free. The animals that are on show have a very large cage and are well kept for. The are is high up the hill and has stunning view to the sea.
We read that there wasn't much to do there, so we did not expect much. We however throughly enjoyed going and walking around and seeing greek nature.

This probably used to be a nice zoo. But now it is nothing more than the somewhat sad remains of a zoo. The location on a hill in a wooded area is however very nice. But there are not many large animals left (some sheep, deer, goats) and some smaller like water fowl, tortoises, rabbits and small birds.Entrance is free.

More like a park, not zoo and that's what I'm glad about. Most of the animals they fit in and are taken care of. Would not feel happy and relaxed in a a overgrouded place with all kinds living creatures that doesnt belong.
A wolf seemed to be extremely stressed and afraid. These animals better would be relocated elsewhere, with cages that gives them some privacy too and space (how about the climate and temperature...?). Otherwise, with small animals and this lovely donkey, this parkfarm is a cute place for sundaywalks, and spend time with family.

Thessaloniki is the second biggest Greek city, with population well over 1 million people, The city's zoo is not counted among the tourist attractions, but, for every tourist who fell victim to ignorance and actually paid money to visit the very overrated Northern Greece, I have this to offer:
You want to see a zoo with no animals? Do not delay and take the cab to the city's forest, where lies the infamous Thessaloniki's zoo. There is no entrance fee (and that says a lot), no food stores (except some questionable hot dog stands outside the zoo), bathroom facilities are rare and you'd rather avoid them and, to top it all, there are very few animals to see there! Let me be more specific:
The zoo is built upon a hill's side, you have to walk up and down a lot, to see:
ducks
hen
1-2 pelicans
doves
more ducks
then you get to the main attraction: 2 brown bears and nearby a cage with 2-3 skinny wolves.
If you manage to walk up some more, you may find some empty pavillions and the always locked House of Serpents.
On your way down, you get to know the rare species of sheep, goats and chickens.
There are also some little turtles on a lake of sorts and some pheasants on your way out.
That's it. I get that as a theme park they have to present the visitor with a view of the country's native animals, but the whole effort seems poorly executed.
Do not waste your time trying to see animals that you can easily see in a park or farm.

Whilst not a fan of keeping animals in captivity I recognise that some zoos are essential to maintain good breeding programs - and incidentally provide an educational experience without causing animal suffering. Thessaloniki zoo is not one of these. It is best described as a seedy shambles. I suppose it was once an aesthetically pleasing environment, but that too has degraded. There are a few animals and rather more birds, but please do not visit this place and thereby give continued reason for its existence. The Bears? Well they went to Arcturos in Florida where they are well cared for in a decent environment.

This is a nice park to walk about if you like a lot of steps and woodland and the aroma of goat poo.

They only had three types of animal: birds, goats and deer. There were lots of empty cages and it was very hard to navigate around the park as it was a bit of a maze with no signs or arrows to follow a sensible path. It is NOT buggy friendly.

On the plus side the goats were friendly.

When you enter the zoo, you see a lot of ducks running loose. Also rabbits and a male peacock. More than half of the cages are empty but hey, it's free! Capricorns, deers, goats, sheep, a donkey, reindeer, turtles ...
It's not so well maintained but it's worth a walk on a hot day. Go with bus 24 from the city center (last stop) or walk. You will pass by some nice bars with a view over the city.

It's nice and quiet. It was free, at least when we visited. The way to the zoo is also nice, if one goes up through the old town.
