When we visited there were covid restrictions in place, nevertheless it was very interesting and gave an insight into island life in the past.

Well preserved and a lovely insight to early island life

Well worth the admission price - just to see the Harris Tweed being made. We enjoyed walking around and the videos and exhibitions were very helpful in bringing the experiences and history to life.

Very interesting to see how the house has been used over the years and lovely that some of its being used as holiday accommodation. Cafe food was great and visitor Centre staff very helpful and friendly.

An immaculately done conversion of these old blackhouses - the whole place feels like stepping back in time.Well worth carrying on along the coast too for a little, on a signposted track (boggy) to see the gorgeous coastal landscape all around.

It is easily accessible. It normally charges a few pounds for entry but was free of charge as the museum was closed during covid management period. Not a big site, the few blackhouse provided some imagination about the life of local people in the past.

Surpassed expectations...like the Island itself

Stayed in the smallest cottage 23rd-27th Aug. I really don't have the words to describe what a wonderful week we had here. Located in a beautiful spot with wonderful skyscapes and lighting. Warm cosy cottage, quite an experience waking up with the stone/wood around you! You really felt like you were living in a part of history. Didn't have a lot of contact with the team on site but they were very welcoming and helpful when needed. Would strongly recommend this site for people looking for something a bit different and with a beautiful location.

So very interesting
Jul 2021
This was so interesting with the weaver doing a bit of weaving the tweed inside one of the blackhouses. The house was kitted out with furniture etc from years ago and very homely with a peat fire burning away in the grate. Another house had boards and video telling on how the locals used to live etc. Really good the way they have put it all together.

fantastic stay!
Jun 2021
We stayed for 6 nights in late June and the sun shone every day ( I can't promise this for other visitors though!) We were the only people staying and so we had the whole village to ourselves each evening! It can be busy with visitors during the day but we were out and about so that wasn't a problem. Staying in one of the blackhouses was amazing. Be prepared for the fact there are no windows to see out of but there is a lovely bench at the end of the village looking over the beach and coast. The cottage was clean and the kitchen was well equipped. Under floor heating and a little stove meant we were very cosy in the evenings too.

Interesting but avoid going when tour bus arrives
Jun 2021
A very interesting place to see and step back in time. Lovely independent gallery next door as well.

This stop would have been very good if a tour bus hadn't arrived just after we arrived. No social distancing at all in the blackhouse itself (which is obviously small) and all those on the bus seemed to pour into the room we were trying to get out of.) Some sort of Covid crowd management should be put into place for entry in to the blackhouse.

There was no room to sit in the cafe because the tour bus had booked all available seats. But nevertheless, very polite staff and well worth the visit.
