We visited two viewpoints in mid-September on the second day of our 5-day Mangistau tour.
We drove from the yurt camp Ethno Aul Kogez (44.227882, 52.056419) on an asphalt road (with a stop at a red massif, Krasnyy Kan'on (44.160648, 52.410603)) 62km to a turnoff (44.0986, 53.131337).
After 7km on a dirt road, we had a view of the Sor Tuzbair salt flat from a viewpoint (44.046921, 53.159111) as it started to rain. From a second viewpoint (44.037731, 53.15773), over 1km away, the view was even more impressive despite the rain.
Afterward, 500m further, we visited a spot (44.03774, 53.15472) with a view of a rock formation. The three stops together took a half hour. That half hour with light to moderate rain was enough to turn the dirt road into a slippery slope where the 4-wheel drive slipped repeatedly. Since it was a flat landscape, it was not really dangerous. Due to the impassable roads, we could not visit the salt flat. An hour later, we were back in Ethno Aul Kogez with dry wether.
That afternoon, we visited some places without having to drive on dirt roads. The visit to the Karynzharyk Depression the next day was canceled. The visit to the Bozzhyra Valley was also problematic (we could only reach the surroundings, with views, but couldn't enter the valley itself). Also, Bokty Mountain on day 5 was inaccessible.
Actually, Mangistau is not suitable for tourism. In the summer, it is too hot (no shade!), and in winter, it is too cold. In between, even a bit of rain can spoil the visit for multiple days, even with less as 2 hours of light to moderate rain.
