I have done Machu Picchu. I have hiked the mountains of Africa and Australia. This was altogether different and excellent. We arrived in Almaty and spent a few days there resting up. We chose a company who picked us up from the hotel and up to the Big Almaty Lake where the walk began.

Now this walk is not for the feint hearted. Its 4 days and 3 nights of roughing it (Tourist pass, KazPi Meadow and Butakovka pass). Its tough mountains, rocks and glaciers. But it's amazing. Different scenery every hour of every day. Amazing heights and flat plains.

If you are interested in being away from everyone and everywhere - very personalized walking in a small group (just my wife, the expert guide and I) and are not scared of a challenge - carrying 20kg's, sleeping in a tent, climbing mountains and traversing glaciers then this is for you.

I loved it - every moment and would thoroughly recommend it.

The most beautiful place near Almaty is Left Talgar valley. Trekking route: Kim-Asar gorge – Butakovsky pass – Sulusay spring – Left Talgar valley – KazPI meadow – Small Talgarsky pass – Big Talgarsky pass – Shymbulak.
There are a few treks: Big Almaty round travel (Tourist's pass 4000 m), Dmitriev glacier and other places.
