We visited Charyn Canyon on our way from Almaty to Bashi Village (Altyn Emel National Park). It was a drive of over 2.5 hours from Almaty. At the parking lot, we descended the stairs (43.35535, 79.054359) to the bottom of the canyon and walked along the path to the river.

On the Tuesday at the end of August, the weather was pleasant for hiking with plenty of sunshine. Although the parking lot seemed quite full, it was not crowded, and at times, there were no other tourists in sight.

The canyon was quite impressive. By the river, there were shelters where one could have a self-brought lunch (we did not). There were no food or drinks available for purchase. We had to wait for the taxi-truck to arrive, and it turned out that we needed to buy tickets first. With the next taxi-truck (there were two shuttling back and forth), we returned.

After almost total 2 hours, we were back at the parking lot. We had lunch at the new Tary restaurant, where we were provided with plastic gloves as utensils for our (horse meat) burger (recommended). After lunch, we walked along the path above the canyon, reaching two viewpoints, with the furthest one (43.354076, 79.07151) offering the best view. On this path, we encountered no more than 10 other tourists.

The total visit time, including lunch, was nearly 4 hours. It was a highlight of our visit to Kazakhstan.

The canyon is the second largest canyon after Grand canyon in the US. When you enter you will already see the panorama of the place! The car can come close to the panorama where you can start the hiking. It takes around 1-2.5 hours to enjoy the view. The first part is a bit steep since you will go down. After you will hike between canyons. The road path is only toward the river. It's better to hike till the end since you will see a beautiful view with river. It is a great place to see the sunset special from the panorama!!

A stunning place to walk, with no tourism, hype, or commercialism. A long and rough drive from Almaty. Go prepared with snacks and water and enjoy.
Loved the signs that warn you of imminent death if you fall off the cliff. K.I.S.S.

Spending a couple of days in the Charyn National Park area earlier this month was unreal! I had seen the canyon on the excellent travel documentary long way round and knew I had to see it for myself. Now I had the chance and I was not disappointed. We took a guide who was able to get us through some rough driving patches and saw some unbelievable formations and vast scenic vistas. We were given permission to camp in the area so we spent two nights and three days exploring as much as we could. We would have like to have spent more time here but will treasure the time we did spend here.

Great place, though lacking the tourist facilities (cafe/restaurants and even the restrooms!)
But the nature is beautiful and the river, crossing the canyon, make you forget the little inconveniences you face there!
Be careful there, since there is a risk of injury or fall. It is also possible to get lost in the cliffs.

Stunning scenery.
Be aware that it can be very exposed in canyon area - high winds make it feel very cold.

Breathtaking views, nice stay in yurtas near small river. Delicious food in the restaurant. Really good experience even though was really hard to find the right way for going down the canyon :)

We had one day while transiting through Almaty and we chose to visit the Charyn Canyon and never regretted it. We booked a guided tour for 2 in an Audi A6 for a total price of USD178 + admission fees. The scenery there was stunning. We arrived at the canyon at about 12noon and we took around 2hrs to walk through the whole canyon, taking lots of photos. The weather was hot but it doesn't dampen our joyous spirit. It is highly recommended for all visitors to bring some water. Do note that at the end of the track, there is a little knoll on the left of the track (look out for the railings). If you climb up the little knoll, you will be able to have a great view of the place. Highly recommended attraction for all tourists.

The Canyon itself looks pretty good year round (based on photos, I visited in November and the weather was quite mild still!) from up top at the view point, and when you venture to the bottom, there's a river running along with a cafe nearby so you can relax on some of the benches offered (facilities are all very basic just FYI).

The Grand Canyon it isn't, but it's a nice place to wander - views are decent from the top, then you can get up closer to the rocks as you wander the bottom. The trail itself at the bottom is quite short (you can walk up and back in an hour or so) with the rocks changing from a pinkish hue to black as you descend.

It takes a little road trip from Almaty, so good idea to go to the lakes and check out the rest of what the surrounding area has to offer by way of natural beauty.
