We came in March so with a little trepidation about the lake still being frozen for the horse drawn ride across the lake but all was well. It was certainly one of the highlights of the holiday. The horses are well looked after and in good condition and they know their job on the lake and move at pace…absolutely loved it. The highlight of mother s day for sure !

We stayed in Kars to visit Ani and through Lonely Planet discovered Celil Ersoglu (+90 532 226 3966) who can give you tours to Ani and the Lake Cildir area. Lake Cildir is really beautiful and surrounding by mountains and pastures. From Kars it is about 100km and there are places to stop for tea/coffee or lunch on the way. we travelled all the way into the mountains to nearby Seytan Cildir Castle. We did not climb up to the castle but got close enough to get a magnificent view. The Lake is big and all the way you travel close to water and we discovered many bird species there. Very rural area and truly an escape from the busy cities. Celil is knows the area and the history and was very informative. His vehicle is in excellent condition and he is a safe driver and caring guide. Wear are two mature ladies and did both excursions on our own with him. He can be contacted on the above phone number or at Kars Tourist information or Gungoren hotel in Kars. Can highly recommend him and the Lake visit and Ani.

About 60 km from Ardahan, at elevation of 2000 m, the Cildir Gölü is a large lake surrounded by the peaks of the Causcasus. In April you have 'Arctic' feeling with ice floes floating on the water and the snow capped mountains. Acceptable asphalt road takes you to Akcakale Village, where a peninsula reaches into the lake.
On the northern coast of the lake, there is a restaurant with excellent fish food (and they serve alcoholis beverages, as well).

This place does not have so many place to eat fish but best one is there. Atalayın Yeri is the only place to eat something and serves very good and delicious fishes. Cıldır lake was frozen. You can enjoy fishing and slipping with sladge on ice.

This is one of the high altitude lakes of Turkey. Located above 2000 meters, it freezes in winter. Is bigger then it looks on the map and surrounding it by car takes hours. Is a good camping place, as most of the shores are deserted and only a few villages exists around it.

A beautiful experience.
The lake is located at an altitude of 2000 ms.
In winter it freezes!
You can ride a sleigh, pulled by horses. (They are very well looked after)
You can eat beautiful fish caught in the lake.
Delicious cold.

The lake, at an altitude of 1970 meters, is really worth seeing. We went from Ardahan side. It was very easy to reach Çıldır district center via the double road and the smooth road. There was only one fish restaurant as a facility. I can't comment since we didn't go there. The whole lake was frozen. It continued like this until March 15th. Walking on the lake was enjoyable. In addition, there are horse-drawn sleigh rides and snowmobile options. Horse-drawn sleighs are 100 TL per person, the engine is 300 TL, and the banana attached to the back of the engine was very enjoyable, which costs 150 TL per person. was. The horses are much better-groomed than the old horses on the islands. However, horse-drawn sleigh rides or motor tours do not take that long. There are people skating on the lake, but you have to bring your own skates. Apart from this, you can even play ball in the lake. It's relatively clean, I hope it stays like this.

Lake Çıldır is really worth seeing. But if you are going to eat something, I recommend you to ask the price in advance. In our opinion, the price of meatballs in the historical Ada restaurant yesterday was much higher than it should be. But we were a little upset because we didn't learn the price at first.
