About
Initial name of the Chaqchan was "Ju-Khang" that was calls by the Bonpos. This name was changed into hLa-khang, when the entire population with their kings embraced into Buddhists faith. During 7th Century this monastery was reconstructed and changed into a Jami-Masjid, when the Noorbakhshi Sufi Muslim priest Mir Syed Ali Hamadani entered into Baltistan and introduced Islam.

The mosque is quite pretty, but you can only see it from below by looking up to look outside, because non-Muslims are not allowed in. Frankly syrup three and a half hours drive from Skardu on an uncomfortable road to get here to see the mosque only from the outside is not worth it. Too bad, because a place like this should be considered a monument accessible to everyone more than a place of worship, given its old age. The flow of non-Muslim tourists to Khaplu is so low that they would not disturb the prayers inside the mosque at all.

THis is a very old mosque built with wood, and still maintained in the same way over all these years. They dont allow Non Muslims inside. The wood is intricately carved, and the mosque is used daily for prayers. See pictures attached for the nicely carved wood all around. The locals at the mosque were friendly and did show us around. We did see similar mosques in Shigar area as well.
The children hanging around the mosque were very friendly and curious to talk with us strangers

Thousand year old mosque tucked away in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. I did not expect to see such exquisite wood work.

Known as Khanqah-e-mualla among the locals, it is symbolic of the Nurbakhshi (A sufi order) majority residing in khaplu. The designs and patterns on the exterior indicate the building's Buddhist origin.if you are interested in sufism the Chaqchan mosque is worth a visit

Definitely worth a visit if you are in Khaplu. It's a really old mosque and has such a authentic charm. The wood work is really beautiful and this mosque is worth a visit if you are in the area. Please leave a donation as it's an old mosque and does need some renovation work to restore it to it's former glory.

It is an architecture marvel. It is a mosque. Modest clothing recommended. Offer a prayer. It is a quiet little space..great for contemplation. About 15 minutes of hike (on a road) up from serena. If you have lunch at Serena you can take a walk up the road to enjoy the mosque.

Its a historical muslin mousque (masjid) near Khaplu palace Sarena hotel and takes 30 minute walk from hotel. Non-muslims are not allowed to enter inside the building. The tibetean style village is beautiful so must look around. There is a view point of the valley behind the mousque.

How much you have to hike to reach there?
I read in Tarrar's book that you get to hike and reach to this marvellous place.

Depends on where you are going to start from. For us it was a casual 20 minutes walk from the Serena Palace Hotel in Khaplu to this mosque.
