About

Good museum and archaeological remains

The museum was very modern and nicely laid out, but, I was a little disappointed at the lack of useful information on display. The fact that most of what was on display were in small, glass cases and the area was mainly lit by large windows around the museum, it made for a lot of glare on the display cases, which was a little frustrating, particularly for taking any pictures. But, there were a lot of interesting objects, particularly the reconstructed columns from the peristyle house. I thought admission was a little steep for the museum, but, I reminded myself that the outdoor remains were free and that one is essentially paying for the upkeep of that as well. It was also disappointing that the forum area is closed off and only able to be visited at certain times. The peristyle house, however, is pretty nicely conserved and presented, and there are several informational boards about that. Considering how little there is dating to the Roman period within close proximity to Caen, it's well worth the trip if history and archaeology are among your interests.

Overlooked Excellent attraction near Caen

Vieux, which is a small village near Caen, was an important population center in Gallo-Roman times. The route is well-marked out of Caen along small agricultural roads. Don't give up! You will find a well-presented museum housing Roman finds from the area with French and English information, as well as foundations from a Roman villa and a forum under excavation a short walk away. On the day we visited the only other visitors were French school children. A very friendly and helpful young man from the museum explained several exhibits to us and provided directions to the Grand Peristyle House nearby. For an American this was a great chance to learn about Roman Gaul without crowds. Great interactive exhibits for kids as well, including about Roman food.

Great link to Roman history in France

Very well developed site of Roman ruins outside Caen. Spend some time here in the museum to see some of the items discovered here, then walk around the site. Foundations of several buildings are on display. The site if the forum is a short walk from the main site.

One disappointment: from the website description we thought we would be able to view the ongoing archeological site. It was closed off, so the best we could do was look through the fence. Although we obviously wouldn't be able to walk around within it, we would have liked to get a better view. Still, worth the visit if you have an interest in Roman history.

It is a little difficult to find with Google Maps directions but the town is small, so if you stick with it you will get there.
