This is an amazing place and definitely a must if you are in south Serbia. There is a car parking at the entrance and then you must walk 15-30 minutes (depending on your physical fitness). There are also several stairs, so don’t remember to wear appropriate shoes. The view from the top is just amazing.

The Devil's Town was just beautiful on a nice sunny winter day. Not only for nature lovers,it is marvelous. Do not miss the Cveta Petka church and make a wish.

I expected more from Đavolja Varoš. They are saying, that it is ranged as one of the 77 wonders of the world. The say, that is a step away from Unesco recognizing it as a natural heritage of the world. Pictures of it are stunning. But when you get there, you are disappointed. I expected an endless field of towers, where you can walk trough and get lost between them. But there is actually exactly as much towers as they are on a post card. There is only one route, it is scenic allright, but nothing special. There are some wells and mines, which are interesting but no more than that. Don't get me wrong, still worth of visit and paying the entrance fee (300 RSD, that around 2,5 EUR), but don't expect too much.

Dear Nejc Z,
Thank you for the review! We're sorry if you're dissapointed and expected something bigger that it really is. The site of Djavolja Varos is created as a result of a specific erosive process and is protected by Serbian Institute for Nature Protection. Therefore, it's strictly prohibited to walk between the pillars, as you wanted, or even touch or move a single rock.
We had thousand of visitors who were very impressed by Djavolja Varos, it's genesis and resistance despite the fact that they are made only from soil... But "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", so everyone has the right to judge whether something is for him more or less worth.

When I was planning my first visit to Serbia, I saw Davolja Varos among sightseeings and decided to go there for sure. And we did it with my husband. We stayed in Niska Banja and drove there 2 hours. The roads are not very good, but not so bad. Any kind of car can pass it easily. You can follow road signs and will not be lost. My Garmin GPS could not find it, until I entered its coordinates. The road itself is soooo beautiful, so you will enjoy it as we did. Just before the entrance there is a space for parking that is free. The entrance fee is 350 RSD. Also there are some souvenir shops and traditional restaurant. Then you have to go through a forest and pass gallery of wooden sculptures. Then you follow the Yellow river and get to Saxon mines. Here in 13 century they exploited ores of copper, iron and gold. After you will see Red well and see real Marsian landscape of red and yellow soil. After a while start climbing by stairs to the 1st observation deck and here you are. I saw those figures, which look fantastic. There is another observation deck, from where the figures are closer from both sides of the railings. The place itself is magical. Nothing diabolic, anyway. We felt very welcome there. However, we saw a lot of strange trees, bent in unnatural way and looking awsome. There is also St.Petka small church that was under reconstruction. I liked the place very much and for sure it was worthy our 2 hour trip (and back).

Dear Damir007,
Thaks for your response.
We're glad that you enjoyed your visit to Devil's Town.
You're absolutely right about cleanliness of our facilities in days when ther's extremely large number of tourists (up to 1,000 per day) and we'll try to improve that this year.
If you decide to visit us again, we hope that you'll see the difference.

Worth seeing but is poorly structured approach. When it rains, all the mud on the road that has to go on foot. Older can be difficult to reach the goal. It is ideal for cable car. There is no shop for drink or food.
Two rare natural phenomena at the same spot: 202 stone formations created by erosion, between two and 15 meters in height and the middle diameter of under 1 m, topped by stone blocks weighing as much as 100 kg, appearing unreal and yet lasting for centuries, and two springs of extremely acid water (pH 1,5) with high mineral content (15 g/l; content of some elements even 1000 times as high as in ordinary drinking waters) make Djavolja Varos a true wonder of nature.
The natural surrounding area adds to the attraction of these two wonders, depicting a rather harsh, almost mystical atmosphere, but at the same time picturesque and timid, just like the remains of the town, old church, cemetery, and several interesting mines.
Djavolja Varos has been put under protection of the state in 1959, while in 1995, by the Decision of the Serbian Government, it was declared the natural good of an outstanding importance, giving it the first-category level of protection – NATURAL MONUMENT. Thus, the whole 67 hectares of its territory are protected.
Such a place in the world is only 22.

I was visiting this place with 4 other people and the geological formations are very very interesting. The hiking trail is about 3 hours long (average walking). Part of the hike is through the woods and part of it under a direct sun. If you're going during the warm months don't forget sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water for there is no drinking water along the pathway. On your way out you can buy some homemade products/souvenirs from Serbia (such as rakija (plum brandy), quince brandy, strawberry liqueurs and other goodies). There is a spring of mineral water that is running down the rocks from the top of the hill. The water is not for drinking but they say is healthy for the skin (because of high content of the minerals). They sell 1 l bottles with this water by the entrance (about 300 dinars = about 6$). However one of the ladies selling the homemade products told us to go a bit off the path to gather the water. And so we did. The climb towards the spring is steep and rocky and not for everyone.
Great experience!

I leave Prolom Banja in the morning and my plan was to visit the "Devil's town" nearby - just 30 km away.
It's really a natural phenomenon and you can see the beginning of process also.
A nice walk through the forest, around 300 meters awa from the parking area.

Devils Town is a natural phenomenon that became as a result of erosion. It consists of hundreds of towers made of stone, high from 2 to 15m. Dozen of them dominate the area and by folk myth they represent petrified nuptials. In the middle of Devils Town flow a small river. There are still several springs in the stone that resemble on a gateway to hell (as known by fans of video game Diablo). Place is both fascinating & spooky.

It is so beautiful, and the nature is so calm. I really liked the "orange river" which is rich of iron, and it is smells like money. It definitely needs to be on your must see list!!

Dear Mila S,
Thanks for your review. Devil's Town is situated in area of an old volcano and that's the reason for high level of minerals in water and soil and for "caps" at the top of pilars.
We're glad you enjoyed your trip through our site and hope to see you there again!

Hello, I would like to see Devil's town by day-time. Then hike tot Prolom.
I have read, there's a hiking trail, I would love to know if that's true.
Than hike back tot Devil's town and see it by night in the artificial lighting.
Is this possible? And is there a place to camp near Devil's town?
Written June 25, 2018
Dear Bianca, there is a hiking trail from Devil's Town to Prolom Banja, but unfortunately it's not in good condition and without clear notification boards. Also, the site of Devil's Town is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Night tours are possible for organized groups only.
See you at Devil's Town!

hi,how I can go to Davolja Varos from Belgrade by a good and also not expensive tour?how I can find it?
Written November 3, 2017
Check out Belgrade Walking Tours, but keep in mind that it is very difficult to do a day trip since from Belgrade it is at least 4h drive... Usually tour operators have one night stay in some nearby city which makes it a bit more expensive...

Hi all! I'm thinking about travelling to Serbia in October and would like to visit Devil's Town but I won't have access to a car. How should I do this? Where is the best place to stay with access for a day trip? Are there any bus routes or will I have to go on a tour or by taxi? Any information on logistics would be great! Thank you very much in advance!
Written September 12, 2017
Hi, RBrog! Our suggestion is to travel to Kursumlija town (27 km from Devil's Town) and then take a taxi (there's no regular bus line to Devil's Town). If you want a place to stay, we recommend Prolom Banja (30 km) and you have direct bus lines to Nis and Beograd from there.
Written September 13, 2017
Hi, I'm planning to drive down to Nis and then drive to Devils Town in a few days. What are the hours to visit? Where can you find information on the spa? Thanks!
Written August 29, 2017
Dear Christina,
Visiting hours are from 9 am to 5 pm every day. The nearest spa is Prolom Banja (30 km), you can find the information at their website.
