Davolja Varos (Devils Town) is a fabulous geomorphological phenomenon close to the border with Kosovo.
To reach these amazing red stone structures, which are up to 15metres in height &capped by a flat stone of a black colour to give a mushroom effect, you need to buy tickets at the entrance (350 dinar). There is a well marked path uphill past wooden sculptures, an old Saxon mine &red springs (which have a pH of an incredible 3.5) before you climb a series of steps to 2 different viewing platfirms offering excellent views of these structures &the beautiful surrounding countryside. You pass the tiny St Peters Church on the way back diwn.
There is a bar/cafe &gift shop at the entrance.
To walk round the whole of 'Devils Town' takes approximately 1.5 hours.
The site is not too easy to reach by public transport but we went with a taxi from Nis which cost us 50Euros to include waiting tine. The journey from Nis is around 1.5hours.
Davolja Varos is like a mini Cappadocia &definitely worth. visiting.

This mysterious, unique place rendered me completely speechless. The whole site is awe-inspiring, with such a long and rich history, that I felt walking in the footsteps of our predecessors! The place where the acidic springs spontaneously emerge from the ground were really interesting, I even tried the astringent water, it was exciting. The rock formation itself is the myths and legends becoming reality - definitely something you don't get a chance to see many times in your lifetime! It looks kind of spooky and ancient, breathtaking and enigmatic!

Legend and mystic, but it is all create by nature.
Nature is a miracle, our great artist and creator.
Go to this hidden part of south Serbia, you will find all of this.
Strange forest, small mine tunnels, red river and strange formation of nature.
You can stand there for hours , and you will have no idea how it was made, what happened.

In the mether of fact, ,,Djavolja varoš" is a park: walk through unique landskape, made by termal activiti, geo activit and iron-reach land (that last give red colour to water, land...). At the end of the route, about half en hour after start, you will come to the end: the towers that comes from earth, like some stone-made gras. Just, much bigger. Rout need some fitnes. It is in the forest, so its very healthy to go. And by the route, you can see wholes of the minning from antique, and midlle ages period.
When you return from the route to the start, you can take rest in restoran, made on open area, with local specialitys.
Ideal for family, landskapes lovers, and eco-fans.

We have been to Đavolja Varoš during our holiday in October 2013. The attraction is situated about 12 km away from Prolom Banja and about 25 km from Kuršumlija. It is somewhat strange if you come from the direction of Niš. First there is a big sign to give you the direction and after this there is no further information. From Niš you have to follow the road to Skopje and then Prokuplje. A little part of the journey the road connections were bad, especially after Prokuplje. But if you drive carefully the problems are not too big.
The total of the park is not very big and you cannot compare this attraction to Cappadocia. But it is very nice and beautiful and you can make a beautiful walk and visit an interesting wooden church of Sveti (Saint) Petko. There are several sculptures in the park. At the entrance you can taste some of the homemade products of Serbia, especially raki.
The geological formations are very interesting and beautiful but before I had thought the park was much larger. You can spend 2 or 3 very interesting hours but it is very wise if you want to visit this attraction to make a combination with another attraction like visiting the Spa of Prolom Banja or the old churches and monasteries of Kuršumlija (the monastery of Sveti Nicolai).
Or make a combination with visiting the ruins of Caričin Grad (city of the Emperor), dating back to the 6th century.
Also in the region it is beautiful to visit the rivers Toplica, Banjska, Jablanica en Kosanica to walk, to fish or make a picknick.

Very interesting place
I recommend it
Beautiful nature.
The road to the top is well prepared. Even in August at 35Cdeg air temperatures a walk through the forest is not very bothersome and the final view rewards the effort.

This is an amazing place and definitely a must if you are in south Serbia. There is a car parking at the entrance and then you must walk 15-30 minutes (depending on your physical fitness). There are also several stairs, so don’t remember to wear appropriate shoes. The view from the top is just amazing.

Hello, I would like to see Devil's town by day-time. Then hike tot Prolom.
I have read, there's a hiking trail, I would love to know if that's true.
Than hike back tot Devil's town and see it by night in the artificial lighting.
Is this possible? And is there a place to camp near Devil's town?
Written June 25, 2018
Dear Bianca, there is a hiking trail from Devil's Town to Prolom Banja, but unfortunately it's not in good condition and without clear notification boards. Also, the site of Devil's Town is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Night tours are possible for organized groups only.
See you at Devil's Town!

hi,how I can go to Davolja Varos from Belgrade by a good and also not expensive tour?how I can find it?
Written November 3, 2017
Check out Belgrade Walking Tours, but keep in mind that it is very difficult to do a day trip since from Belgrade it is at least 4h drive... Usually tour operators have one night stay in some nearby city which makes it a bit more expensive...

Hi all! I'm thinking about travelling to Serbia in October and would like to visit Devil's Town but I won't have access to a car. How should I do this? Where is the best place to stay with access for a day trip? Are there any bus routes or will I have to go on a tour or by taxi? Any information on logistics would be great! Thank you very much in advance!
Written September 12, 2017
Hi, RBrog! Our suggestion is to travel to Kursumlija town (27 km from Devil's Town) and then take a taxi (there's no regular bus line to Devil's Town). If you want a place to stay, we recommend Prolom Banja (30 km) and you have direct bus lines to Nis and Beograd from there.

Hi, I'm planning to drive down to Nis and then drive to Devils Town in a few days. What are the hours to visit? Where can you find information on the spa? Thanks!
Written August 29, 2017
Dear Christina,
Visiting hours are from 9 am to 5 pm every day. The nearest spa is Prolom Banja (30 km), you can find the information at their website.
