On the exact day of the Centenary of the Epic battle of Messines I wanted to share my review and my personal experience of being in this cemetery and memorial that means so so much to a small but very proud Country. I first visited this place on a sunny Tuesday morning, what a spectacular view of the Area that the New Zealanders attack came from as from the back of the Cemetery the German front positions would have stood, the dominating Messines Ridge which was supposed to be one ofthe most strongly defended positions in the Salient, that was taken on one day, In the summer sun with the birds singing making it comparable to the Sheffield Memorial park on the Somme battlefield, for me to come to see one of the few achievements made in 1917 by Britain and her Commonwealth allies was a joy to behold, I loved it so much that I went back on my last Evening in Belgium and reflected on those men who had come from so far away.
The Cemetery and memorial are a must for anybody to seeand especially those who are from New Zealand, We will remember them, it would be Ignorance to forget these heroes.

We went to visit my great great Uncles grave. It is a beautiful setting, really well maintained with lovely roses.

We walked around the memorial and cemetary and were humbled by all those who gave up their lives, so far from home. It is sad for those who remain unknown. The grounds are beautifully kept and the surrounding countryside so beautiful and peaceful. We will remember them .....

I visited this cemetery near the end of a day of battlefield touring. The setting of this cemetery at a higher elevation gives the visitor an excellent 360 degree view of the former battlefield and the opportunity to reflect upon what took place here 100 years ago.

take time to walk a round and look at the headstones of those buried here, and those who are missing, they gave everything, for a place they had most likely never even heard of, travelling halfway around the world.
