It was an incredibly hot day and we spent our time (almost 3 hours) between the reception area and the palace….. both the palace and the museum (next to reception) we’re incredibly stuffy with no air con, nowhere to sit and nothing offered to drink…. Thank goodness we had some water.

The guide (Daniel) seemed to know lots of dates re: the palace owners, the history of the world in renaissance period, spice trade, etc…. But the tour was very scant on any information about wine …. Which we found somewhat annoying bearing in mind the length of time we spent on their premises.

The guide took us into the art and African artefacts museum which was totally irrelevant (apart from the last 10 minutes in the areas where the muscatel is kept and the new casks are stored) and then we entered the reception which was a bit like a noisy cafeteria to eventually sample 3 wines which he poured and then duly left after each was served.

At no stage did he entertain questions from the group… I asked him a question at the end and he simply walked away!!

For sure, they have some good wines but don’t go on the wine tour expecting to here about wines.

After making a reservation for a guided tour, we arrived at the vineyard to learn more about its product, but we had no idea that we would find a private art museum with pieces from Africa, incredible paintings by Germans. It was a great surprise!

After passing through the museum we went directly to the wineries.
The tour was super good, the guide was very friendly.
Then we went through a room to taste three wines: one red, one white and muscatel.

And all for €6 per person

I visited the Bacalhoa winery together with my wife. In this case, the Palácio da Bacalhôa + Bacalhôa Adega Museu Exhibition, lasting 150 minutes. The cost was €14.00/person, in Portuguese (suuuuper cheap).
The employee who guided us was Bia (Beatriz), very attentive and friendly, with an exclusive visit to the Palace (just me and my wife). We learned the entire history of the winery and took several photographs. Hahaha
After the palace we went to the museum, this time with a group of people.
At the end we had a tasting of three wines, after which we requested another tasting that was a little more complete. We love all wines. Unfortunately we were unable to taste the “centenário”, but we tasted several others and ended up buying several bottles to bring with us to Brazil, such as Palácio da Bacalhoa; Quinta da Bacalhoa red and white, 10 and 20 year old Moscatel de Setúbal. Sensational. They are to be congratulated. It was really worth visiting the winery. We became fans.

We went for the wine tasting but were surprised by the art collection. It’s got something for everyone—modern art, hand painted tiles from several centuries and styles, African art and classical sculptures. The African collection, which is organized by country, is especially interesting. Our guide was wonderful—very knowledgeable about not only the wines and winery but also the art.

Wines were delicious but sadly not available back home.

We came here last Saturday for a tour. We were booked on a Portuguese tour although of the three of us, only one person was Portuguese. The wonderful Susanna was our tour guide and she very kindly switched to English for us. She was so lovely - knowledgeable and informative about the whole experience. The mixture of art and wine is such a winning combination and we absolutely loved the experience. I cant thank Susanna enough for making the experience so interesting and enjoyable whilst learning about the art and the wine! We will definitely be back.

It was simply brilliant to visit the entire Quinta da Bacalhoa accompanied by a super friendly guide, knowledgeable about history and very intuitive, making us understand all the ancient processes of wine making. The art exhibitions are very beautiful and interesting, a set of factors that everyone should have some free time and visit and learn about the immense history of Portuguese culture. Fantastic !!!

We visited for a wine tasting & art exhibit tour (book ahead). Isabella was our tour guide and she was wonderful! She was knowledgable & passionate. In the tasting room Rodrigo was pouring one of our tastings and went WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND he helped us arrange the next tour we wanted to see (the maze at the Palacio) and also arranged transportation for us because we didn’t have a car. The service here couldn’t have been better and the wines and grounds were stunning, this is a must visit!

A visit to the vineyard that in addition to enjoying the wines, there is also an art exhibition, is the Art and Wine program. Lots of wonderful art pieces and the tasting is excellent, finished with a delicious Moscatel. The store is very good and varied. Excellent!

The visit today to Bacalhoa waa fantastic. We loved seeing the art collection and having it explained with enthusiasm and knowledge by our wonderful guide Rodrigo. The wine tasting at the end finished the tour on a perfect footing. Thank you Rodrigo for all the information and a great visit.

We booked a tour (in English) at this well-known winery expecting to get a full explanation of how grapes are grown, harvested, put in barrels and finally ending up as wine in a bottle.

That was however not the case, we were instead given an explanation about the collections of Angolan artifacts that the owner of this wine cellar acquired, followed by a look in one of the cold rooms where wine gets matured. We even got a glimpse of the owner's personal wine collection (albeit behind glass).

The next (and last) stage of the tour was a tasting of three of their exquisite wines (all of which were tasty in my humble opinion) which was a perfect ending to this tour but we are still curious about how grape juice now eventually turns into wine.
Or is that not the intention of such a tour?
The sad thing is, others before me also criticized the lack of information about the process of 'how wine is actually made', but so far no adjustments have been made to the tour. What a pitty!
Mixed feelings…
