About
The palace is a very beautiful masterpiece of the Renaissance immersed in a charming environment, which provides real life story of a sixteenth-seventeenth-century aristocratic family. The front is simple and essential, surrounded by light and functional spaces as well as the Italian garden with the fishpond and the double exedra-shaped banister.Besides there is the orchard, the vineyard, the chestnut wood and a succession of country and simple buildings for the running of the farms.

Following a recommendation from a friendly tourist information officer in Chiavenna who spoke excellent English we visited this wonderful villa on a very rainy day which didn't detract from the magnificent beauty of this Villa built in 1600's. It survived the great flood and was self sufficient with water, milk, wine, vegetables. Get there on a nice day by bicycle or walking for 35 minutes along a track through the lovely northern Italian countryside, or as we did because of the rain, in a taxi. Minimum charge though is €10,expensive especially when taxi taking us charged €15! Well worth the €6 entry fee. Take in the views from the top level of the villa, and enjoy the chestnut forest and gardens.

Stopped by on our bike ride. Truly a lovely place to visit, our guide was full of interesting information, that certainly gave us a good insight to history of this building.

Italy is full of museums. I have seen hundreds of them.
Palazzo Vertemate is one of the very best.
That I never heard of it and stumbled upon during a hiking trip in the Alps only made the surprise better.
The Palazzo and its grounds provide a tangible experience of how nobility lived on the 1500-1600s.
Our guide, Aurora, was among the best We ever had. Our easily-bored teenagers were fascinated the whole tour and called it "interesting", which for them is a rave reviews rarely seen.
This is actually the hunting lodge to the nearby main palace which was destroyed in a catastrophic landslide that wiped out the nearby village on the 1600s, killing over 1000.
The quality of the art, the frescoes, the ceilings in elaborately carved woods, and the history make this a must-see.

Unfortunately I dont know the guides name, and if it is only him, but he filled us with information both related to the villa and also not that was all interesting and appreciated. The villa itself is very nice as its small gardens. We went on a rainy Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy

A must see experience for anyone interested in Renaissance buildings as it has been barely altered since it was completed. It has a most interesting history and stands at the head of the Valchiavenna with lovely views.

Not to be missed for lovers of the Renaissance on a trip to Chiavennna!!
Entry includes a guided tour of the Palazzo and one can stay and enjoy the beautiful gardens after taking in the wonderful interior decorations of the building (wonderful wooden hand carved ceilings).
There was a group of 5 english speaking visitors and our guide, Giovanna, conducted the tour in English. She was excellent, very knowledgeable and entertaining with her stories about the house and its owners.
Check out the history on the internet and make sure include this gem on your tour of the area.

Highly recommended as a stopover or short excursion from Chiavenna. The building was originally constructed as a hunting castle. After a giant landslide destroyed most of the local town, it was used as a main residence. The rustic exterior belies the opulent interior with rich wood carvings, paintings, furniture, etc. The tour is fun and brings the history of the palace to life.
