The powerful Berenger de Roquefeuil (1448-1530), descended from the aristocracy of Quercy and Rouergue, devoted several years of his life to making of Bonaguil the fortress of legend that it is today. It equips the castle with an enormous barbican, with six towers, one of which is among the most beautiful in the country, with seven drawbridges, a baffle, a casemate, gunboats and a pierced sparrow tower Of loopholes for a more incisive defense of the ditches. In spite of a paradoxical situation between Quercy and Perigord, far from the main thoroughfares, magnificent architecture, gigantic proportions (the quarter in plan of the city of Carcassonne) and a state of conservation so remarkable led VIOLLET-LE-DUC, Lawrence d'ARABIE or André BRETON to quote Bonaguil as an example! The commune of Fumel bought Bonaguil in 1860 and classified it under the title of Historic Monuments in 1862.

This is an impressive, imposing castle. There is a lot to explore with lots of steps. No problem for us but something to consider if you have mobility problems. The view from the top of the keep is spectacular and well worth the climb

We really enjoyed our visit to Chateau de Bonaguil. We were given a leaflet in English for the self guided tour. The numbers didn't always tie in with the numbering around the castle but it was easy to work out and really didn't matter. Lots...More

A spectacular view and full details of its history was part of the experience during a guided tour of the region by hostess Sally while staying at her very lovely guest house 'Atelier de la Rose'

Good visit for half a day. Parking at the base of the hill was good and free. Few shops and bistros but not excessive. Long climb to the castle but it is worth it. Mostly in ruins. We all enjoyed the visit and it comes...More

Free parking! Nicely indicated tour around the castle, with some interesting info on how the different rooms in the castle were used (clever use of the water closets... can you find them in the castle? ;-) ) Fair price! If you are around this area,...More

Great day out for all the family - very large and detailed castle with lots of interesting rooms, history, magnificent views and lots of spiral staircases. Look out for dragons ! A good value outing for a family.

I went as a group that included my small niece (coming up to 3) and we used the top car park (worth doing if people don't want to walk to far up hill). We went just after lunch and a lovely wander around the castle...More

I saw a lady with a rather overweight Labrador there so they clearly allow dogs. However I wouldn’t recommend dragging a dog around there on a hot day
