The powerful Berenger de Roquefeuil (1448-1530), descended from the aristocracy of Quercy and Rouergue, devoted several years of his life to making of Bonaguil the fortress of legend that it is today. It equips the castle with an enormous barbican, with six towers, one of which is among the most beautiful in the country, with seven drawbridges, a baffle, a casemate, gunboats and a pierced sparrow tower Of loopholes for a more incisive defense of the ditches. In spite of a paradoxical situation between Quercy and Perigord, far from the main thoroughfares, magnificent architecture, gigantic proportions (the quarter in plan of the city of Carcassonne) and a state of conservation so remarkable led VIOLLET-LE-DUC, Lawrence d'ARABIE or André BRETON to quote Bonaguil as an example! The commune of Fumel bought Bonaguil in 1860 and classified it under the title of Historic Monuments in 1862.

As you approach this chateau along the road the first view you get of the castle is breathtaking. It is good value for money when you visit the castle. The little shops in the grounds of the castle are reasonable and you can buy some great gifts.

This is a medieval castle that remains true to its style. Instead of driving all the way up to the castle parking lot, you will get a chance to see the Bonaguil village by walking up the path. Along the way there are shops, restaurants and what seemed to be residential houses. It is like a small city on a... More

One of the most impressice castles of France ! It starts when driving to the castle. It suddenly dooms up in front of you, with a high lord of the rings feeling. A very well preserved , and big site to visite. I went there witg 2 4-year old kids and they where very interested and amazed. Tip : you... More

A bit of a serious disappointment to visit Bonaguil again after so many years ! The illustrious Castle still perched on top of a cliff with beautiful landscapes around !!!! And obviously undergoing massive restauration! But the hamlet has become a very touristy business and has lost its charm and serene atmosphere ! Very large car parks at the bottom,... More

Wonderful old castle - good views - fun way to spend 2 hours. some of the rooms renovated and like the originals, others still derelict. Some very ancient grafitti!

We visited the Chateau having debated the reviews here and Chateau Biron. In the end I'm glad we chose Bonaguil it's a super historical site which reeks of the turbulent history of the region. Everywhere you turn the walls are peppered with cannon and gun ports giving defillades against would-be attackers! But enough of its bloodthirsty past. Arriving in the... More

We lucked into a tour that was just starting as we arrived. The guy was super knowledgeable, funny and passionate. He gave the tour in French and I don't know if he or others do different languages or times. He kept us interested for two hours. Had we visited on our own, we likely would have been out of there... Really well preserved castle, quite large - allow an afternoon for a relaxed wander round - occasionally they host medieval festivals.

This is a nice castle, not as dressed as the Chateau de Duras, but is much bigger. You need a good hour to get around it. The village is lovely, and recommend the restaurant with the goats at the bottom of the hill is also work a visit.
