About Visit Tambora
Mount Tambora, before the year 1815 it was the highest volcano in Indonesia and after the largest eruption in written history in 1815 it now has the deepest caldera in the world. We are Tambora's guesthouse and hiking organisation. We can arrange to have you picked up from the airport, we provide meals and accommodation, porters and camping equipment and show you the stunning views from the rim of the crater. Our packages include two nights stay in our beach house in Calabai village.

Climbing a volcano is always exciting, but climbing Tambora is more than that due too the history of this volcano. One-day trekking and being at the top for sunrise is just amazing and the view on the caldeira is astonishing.

The guest house is more like a super base camp for the Tambora walk. The organisation of transport to the start of the walk, the guide and porter, equipment and food was top. The walk was unforgetable, as i think many people find! Rik,the owner, also helped with all sorts of logistics advice and has an extensive local and Sumbawa network, as well as a convincing way with them! The nearest town is some 5 hours away (Bima, so this help is much appreciated. His wife Nurul prepares lovely local food but not too spiced but also a pasta. All the guests and the family eat together, that's great fun. Rik has extensive knowledge of the Tambora volcano itself. For me it was nice to be at the sea, to swim and do some snorkelling trips including the local volcanic island with a lake you can swim in.

We booked the 2-day hiking tour to tambora. The hike started in the morning and stopped at the late afternoon at a base camp in the jungle where we good some good food and a tent to take rest. We continued at 2am to the peak of Tambora and afterwards went all the way back to the starting point. The hike was challenging but absolutely amazing. Deep jungle, waterfalls, fields of vulcano ashe were just some highlights on the way to the peak of the mountain. Nurul and Rick moved to the guesthouse just 3 weeks ago before we stayed there, so there were still some refurbishing going on. You have to know they have just a traditional shower, but we didn't mind at all about that because it was cleaned well and the quality of the water was good. The homestay is placed directly on the beach in the middle of a bay and offers an breathtaking view and nice sunsets. Our room was largely and very clean. Furthermore we got really good traditional food, because Nurul is an amazing cook. You can spend the evening on the balcony with some drinks and have a nice chat with Nurul and Rick. Overall our time at the homestay was very good, Rick organised everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible and we felt hearthly welcomed all the time. If we are going on the tambora again we are definitly coming back to their homestay. The only thing why we not give a 5 star rating is that the guides we had to tambora could not speak a word english, wish was sad because we had a lot of questions about tambora and the nature whish could not be answered and made the communication quite hard. Thank you to Nurul and Rik for making our trip to Tambora perfect and memorable! We had clear, easy communication from the start, they organized everything, even helping us buy plane tickets from Denpasar to Bima. The trek itself is great, as written in other reviews, with knowledgeable guides who set up everything!! Too easy! We were the first lucky ones to stay at their beach house in Calabai. While Rik is still making improvements the house itself is great as is and we had everything we needed. Perfectly located right on the beach, we loved the sea views to Moyo island, spotting fish from the balcony including a manta ray! Magical sunsets (with Bintang of course!), the relaxing sound of the lapping waves at night, and the engaging hospitality and welcome from Rik. We thoroughly recommend Rik and Nurul for a visit to Tambora. Hope to come back !!

Best place to stay, Tambora guesthouse, and from where to climb & hike Tambora. The highest village, kampung, on the mountain. Rik, Narul & their older son Rama, are the best hosts and guides. Their younger, 2 year old son, Jess, is not yet guiding. Best accommodations in Tambora. Cozy clean guesthouse with hot western style showers. When Rama is there he will guide you personally, with porters for all the gear, and freshly cooked hot meals on the mountain. Fresh vegetables, rice and chicken and many more delicious meals. All freshly cooked and hot, a welcome luxury on the mountain. At home, Narul’s cooking is delicious. Beautiful surroundings and exploration possible everywhere. Quiet and Amazing skies at night. Not to be missed is the Hindu Balinese temple in the Jungle, a short walk away. I came as a guest and left as a friend from their wonderful hospitality.
