About
The parish church of San Lawrenz dedicated to Saint Lawrence, with the passage of time has been furnished with many precious works. Today it has become one of the most beautiful baroque churches on the island of Gozo When Dun Salv Portelli became the first parish priest, in 1893, the church was almost bare. As years went by the church was gradually decorated by pieces of art, such as the four pai

It is very plain on the outside and its silver dome makes it stand out from the rest of the red domed churches of Gozo.
The Church interior is a different story altogether, richly decorated, affresco all over the ceiling depicting biblical scenes and others depicting the patron saint Lawrence.
The altar piece is a beautiful works of art in sculptured marble.
The Lead Crystal chandeliers further enhances this holy shrine. The patron saint's titular statue is simple in its representation of the saint's ultimate maryrdom. The best time to visit the village and it's church is in August during the feast in honour of it's Saint . My suggestion is anyone travelling to Gozo ventures to the village and visit the church, the 2-3 hours spent there are well rewarded.

The church is on the Square, at the top of a small flight of steps. Open the door and look up at the frescoes, and the chandeliers, both are unexpected. It's truly a modern gem.

Such a small village with nothing apparently going on but a church worthy of a city. Simply breath taking inside and even my young children were speechless - need I say more. The story of how it was built and how the funds were raised is humbling and if you are in the area make it a destination not a possibility.

We were passing so stopped off. What a beautiful church. I'm not passionately religious but it was very peaceful. Well worth a visit for the artwork & architecture and my wife got to help with ringing the bells at 12:00 midday with the friendly volunteer hosts.

On the way Dwejra and the Azure Window, one passes by a little charming village with a church overlooking the main square in San Lawrenz. It looks like another church, but on its inside one finds it's not. The church is an art museum in its own right. Paintings, sculptures and a multitude of handcrafts are all manifested in this sacred place. The attendants are very helpful, the place is spotless and brochures with the information needed are available. The way this church is maintained shows that the villagers treat it as their second home. A must visit for sure.

The St Lawrence Church is located in the center of the pitoresque village of San Lawrenz. The interios is well looking, being a continuation to its impressive exterior; the people there are very friendly, offering brochures and informations about the church. Surely worth a stop while going to teh Azure Window, which is a few kilometers away.

You go in and you don't want to go out!! That is how I felt when I visited San Lawrenz church. The quiet and the serenity is unbelievable. If you are in Gozo and you are on your way to Dwejra you have to stop in San Lawrenz square and visit San Lawrenz church and while in Dwejra, the Dwejra Marine Environmental Education Center. Both amazing!!

The village of San Lawrenz is named after Lawrence of Rome and is situated in one of the most remote and peaceful areas of the island. The beautiful church of the village was founded in 1886 and dedicated in 1897. It is an extremely well maintained church with the elaborate beauty found in many of the Gozo churches. We have seen it on several occasion and will never tire of enjoying its religious glory and tranquility.

For such a poor, relatively rural area, this is a most impressive church. The festa of St Lawrence is exceptional. They know how to party!
