About
The area in the northwest of Malta, which includes the coastal area from Golden Bay to Il-Prajjet and ix- Xagħra l-Ħamra, was declared a national park by the Government of Malta by Legal Notice 251 of 2007 in September 2007. The Park has taken the name of the northwest wind/region: majjistral in the Maltese language.Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park is Malta's only natural National park and the largest managed protected site of the island. The Park’s area includes a stretch of 3km of protected coastal cliffs designated as part of a larger Special Area of Conservation of International Importance within the Natura 2000 network. Although the visitor centre was closed when we went (a Sunday), this is one of the most interesting areas to go walking in Malta's mainland. The is, in effect, at the back of the Radisson hotel on golden Bay. There are several routes to follow but we took the coastal route leading to the edge of the cliffs, before dropping down through giant boulders, tiny patches of private farmland and wild flora and fauna to the sea and the most secluded of bays. There was hardly anyone on the path on this sunny January day, the little rocky beach was deserted and the scenery was at its best - I can't imagine doing this on a hot summer's day when the earth would be parched and the plantlike pretty much scorched.

I was really looking forward to visiting here. We called at the information centre where we picked up a map so we could go for a walk before our planned horse ride later that afternoon.
We'd got the bus to Golden Bay and after a bit of wandering round looking for the Park, we stumbled across the entrance by chance. It needs to be better signposted - I think a signpost had fallen down but I didn't notice that until we returned to Golden Bay. The information centre is good though with informative displays.
Off we went with our map but with Malta being so small compared to England we kept forgetting the scale of things is smaller, so we found the map hard to follow and couldn't really tell where we were. It was an unseasonably warm day when we went there, it was over 20degrees in November with not a cloud in the sky. This made the views stunning however we ended up rather warm due to the lack of shade in the park.
As others have mentioned it is uneven underfoot so wear sturdy footwear. Make sure you take a drink with you esp when it's hot and sunny.
It was quite a barren landscape when we went, so totally different to what I'm used to. The coastal views are really nice, but I wouldn't say it's a must see on your Malta holiday.

This park located in the north-western part of the island is a gem for all walkers. Malta is a very populated country but when you walk in this national park you will hardly see another person for hours on end. Very accessible by public transportation.

This is an exposed walk along the cliff top. Stunning views across the ocean and lots of historical remains

I have been to Majjistral on many occassions, such as for long walks in winter and spring, a beautiful kayak trip along the rocky coast which gives you a completely new perspective on the park and have attended some nice events organised by Majjistral park providing insight in the history and natural wonders, and including wonderful dinners at the cooperative farm located just at the edge of the park. Definitely recommend a visit!

To get the best value, do go on a guided tour. Thereby gaining the benefit of local knowledge. At certain times of the year, it can look a little barren but the guide will point out what most of us will miss

Start outside Popeye Village and walk down through the reserve, finishing in Golden Bay. Fantastic views. The ground was covered with wild flowers. Friendly visitor centre. Nice, not too strenuous walk.

Great coastal walk and well worth the ocean views and country scenery. Popular park for locals and tourists. Great for family outings, walking the dogs and just enjoying the scenery. The visitor’s center was closed off season. Be prepared and print a map of the trails; also no signage on the trail but pretty easy to figure out. Getting to the park was a bit challenging with no signage. To find the park, head to Ghajn Tuffieha Bay Riviera, pass the Radisson Hotel and keep going until you come to a parking lot with a fruit / vegetable stand and the IL-Majjistral map on the left.

It's an excellent place for a walk with breath-taking views of the sea with a rough path leading to a desolate rocky bay away from the crowds. Didn't give it a five star because there are few trees, and hunters can still hunt there, which is a shame. They have an excellent app to guide your walks. It's called Majjistral Park and it's free and you can download it from both Google Play and iTunes.

At the time we went the hours were limited 9:00am-3:00pm. We really could have spent all day here.. the views were absolutely breathtaking. The path was a bit rockier than we expected, so wear proper shoes, but even in sandals I did fine. It was quite and all nature.. a really nice retreat.

Thanks for your feedback - glad you enjoyed it.
Just to clarify - the park is open 24 hours a day and can be visited at all times on foot.
If you are referring to the Visitor Centre hours it is always best to check beforehand by emailing info@majjistral.org as during the weekend the park depends on volunteers to open it and summer hours would be different due to the heat they shift to late afternoon. You can also call +356 21521291 to be sure of hours. Thanks!

Try here Raina G, this site won't let me link you a website. You need to google the name Majjistral Park. By the way, I own a holiday flat but it's in Sliema should you need accommodation ;)

I was trying to find the entrnce/beginng of the path but unsucesfull. Doe anybody knows GPS coordinates where the pat 1 starts and if it is marked, and where it is the best to leave the car?

Hi sorry you did not find the office open. It is open weekdays office hours normally Monday -Friday. Weekend openings depend on volunteer availability - always best to phone the park beforehand 21521291.
As regards paths they are not marked but you can download the Park App on a smartphone and this will help you choose your route or else you can print the map which is easy to follow by using landmarks. It can be downloaded from the park website under Walking Routes (sorry no links are allowed on tripadvisor responses it seems):
Parking depends on where you wish to start - if you start near the visitor centre you can park at the entrance to the barracks.
Do also check the Park's Facebook Like page for updates on upcoming events you can join.
