The Sé de Leiria is dating from the 16th century and is located in the center of Leiria. The Cathedral was founded by the humanist D. Frei Brás de Barros, bishop of Leiria. It began to be built in 1559. In 1574, the year of consecration of the temple, the Cabido moved from the Church of São Pedro to the new Cathedral, which is still incomplete. After the death of Afonso Álvares, which occurred in 1575, the direction of the works would have been taken over successively by Baltasar Álvares and Frei João Turriano (other works of recovery and improvement would be carried out in subsequent centuries). The 1755 earthquake caused serious damage to the main façade, in 1772 a new bell tower was built in Baroque style, in the place of initial implantation, next to one of the old doors of the castle wall, the Porta do Sol. During the French Invasions of 1810, a fire led to the partial destruction of the church's interior.

Situated in the city center and passable in going to the castle. Have seen lots of majestic cathedrals in Portugal, this place of worship is simple and airs humbleness !

One of the nicest cathedrals that I've visited. There was some kind of ceremony going on when I got in so I could only stay for a while. Beautiful decorations and a large space. The whole complex nearby is worth visiting.

The entire complex was worth a visit, the cathedral, the open air plaza where mass is held and the story of the three shepherd children. We spent about 2 hours in total. Only drawback, no real place for lunch except bad tourist restaurants. Many Portuguese families picnic on the church grounds.

A quite average Cathedral, built in the Mannerist style and with several baroque additions such as the nice main altar. Nearly completely unadorned inside it feels a bit empty. One thing of note though is the detached bell tower which stands several feet up the hill, a rarity in Portugal.
