A simply wonderful train journey with few stops on the way to step out and enjoy the epic scenery. Well worth and a must visit if you get a chance. There is even a dance at the waterfall on of the stops which is absolutely sensational.

Charming railway trip to Flam on this special train and the museum in Flam about its creation is fascinating too. Wonderful views and the train stops to allow you to see the waterfall enroute.

A must do activity in Flåm. Old train takes you up river valley to Mydral. Journey takes 1hr. Info about journey on tv screens en-route. Stunning waterfalls, river and steep mountains to marvel at. Makes a brief 5 min stop at spectacular waterfall where everyone gets out into wooden viewing platform... as you get sprayed with water from the falls, ethereal music starts to blast out of speakers and a women in a red dress appears on the rocks and dances about! Supposedly related to some mythical tale! We took bikes with us on train and cycled back down the well signposted and popular old navvies road. You need to pre-book bikes onto the train. Alternatively you could walk the 20km back or take the return train.

I think that everything that is necessary to say about riding on the Flåm Railway is already said. This is a once in a lifetime experience. This is not just a rail journey, it´s also an adventure. You can take the train and then ride a bike down again or how about trying out the Zip-line? Sure it is a bit expensive, but as I said; this is a once in a life time experience. Remember also to visit the museum by the station in Flåm. We visited before the journey, which was great cause then we had a lot of background information about the railway.

We were going from Oslo to Bergen and detoured via Flåmsbana (Flåm Railway), Flåm and Sognefjorden. Flåmsbana is the steepest friction railway in north europe if I remember correctly. Any steeper and it would have to have gear-wheels and sawtoothed rail (or whatever that is called in English). The path it follows was made to support building the railway between Oslo and Bergen over high and steep mountains in the late 1800eds. Later they built a railway on the path itself. The train is old, well kept and comfortable. This is and a tourist route - they run slowly past the sights and stop at a spectacular waterfall. There is a museum telling the story of the railway and the early days of Flåm as a tourist destination. Some people rode the train up and rented bikes at the top station (Myrdal) to bike downhill all the way to the Flåm at the fjord-shore. Well worth the detour. The trip down took 1 hour.

Dear Nicolai, We really appreciate that you took time to leave us this lovely review. The Flåm Railway is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. A great way to learn more about the railway and the amazing engineering work behind it, is by visiting the Flåm Railway Museum. They have a great collection of stories and pictures from the building process. It is a real treat for a railway enthusiast! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the journey and we hope to see you soon again! Best regards, Linda
