It was the second day after sghutdown due to the Corona. It was also a national holyday, July 14. Many had the same idea, thus the masks which could be advised previously for the smoke etc. now for the Corona. Many families were on board. The trip from Anduze to St Jean du Gard was nice, the return trip even m ore impressive when coming to Anduze and seeing the mountainface.

We enjoyed very much this steam train experience. Well-worth the price of 16 euro per person for return trip between Anduze and St Jean Du Gard. Nice scenery all the way. At one point we could see a group of huge fish swimming gracefully in the clear river down below. If you take the carriage right behind the steam engine, you can see how they operate the train. It was a highlight of my holiday in France to be on this train. I highly recommend this as a memorable thing to do in this area.

This was a great day trip through some fantastic scenery in the Cevennes. Practicalities (high season) - We took the 1st steam train at 11.30 from Anduze and returned on the 13.30 from St Jean du Gard. This made a tight turnaround for lunch. If you can spare the time, come back on the 3.30 for a more leisurely trip. - on the day we went, the 10.30 departure was extremely packed. Don't count on getting a seat if you do not have sharp elbows and are prepared to barge elderly passengers and those travelling with children out of the way! - the seats in the left hand side in direction of travel (towards the tunnel) have the better view, especially for the first half of the journey. - think about reserving a table for lunch. Based on TripAdvisor reviews, we phoned ahead and reserved a table at Lettres etc Mets creperie for lunch. Although there were some unbooked tables available, we saw several people without reservations being turned away.

Great experience in a steam train to visit the Cévennes. Better to check the train timings in advance. Highly recommended.

Did the train journey one morning, very nice trip, the stream from the train really does smell quite a bit and when your in the tunnel it is rather over powering. In saying that it was worth the trip, the village at the other end of the line st Jean du gard was very pretty and we wondered around before getting the next rain back. Would suggest not wearing white, I wore orange and came away with lots of smoke on the top and my face - all fun though
