About
The basilica of Avioth is a Gothic church from the 14th-15th century, with a surprising size for a village of population 150. It has been classified as a French Historic Monument since 1840. Its 'Recevresse', a flamboyant Gothic building separate from the rest of the church, is an architectural masterpiece unique for its kind. Each year in July, Our Lady of Avioth attracts pilgrims internationally.

The cathedral of Avioth is a very special place to go to. For a place like Avioth (a sleepy small northern France village) is is huge. Inside there is plenty of information about what you see, and also the atmosphere is very pleasant. After visiting the cathedral, you should drive on to Montmedy and visit the citadel. It is like you step into the movie Chocolat...

Like most folks, Avioth is a little detour before or after visting the Orval Abbey in nearby Florenville, Belgium. I was glad for my GPS unit as I wound through the delightful farm country and crossed over into France. This is only 10 minutes from the Abbey, so go ahead and make the trip. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about Avioth - it is a cold, unkempt little village on the NE corner of France, but sitting right in the middle of the tiny town square is this massive cathedral. While the stained glass and interior is not nearly as ornate as other you'll see, it has an 'authentic' charm to us, as if you are walking into it 500 years ago. It was a cold November afternoon and there were only a handful of others there, but I enjoyed walking through it. I have been in Cathedrals and churches all over Europe, and probably wouldn't go far out of my way for this, but if you're going to the Abbey, drop by for an hour - you'll enjoy it.

Though it is a small village church this is one of the finest examples of late medieval northern French church building. The mix of styles show all stages of growth of the church through the ages.

The visit was so unexpected given that there are barely any houses and or attractions around, and the basilic is suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere. It is so unexpected and defenitely worth the stop. The glassmosaic is really nice, and the quietness around is extremely peaceful.

We were astounded to find such a beautiful old church on this side road from Belgium to France. Our visit was enhanced by being able to listen to a local choir practising. There is a nice cafe/restaurant opposite which we wish we had discovered earlier, rather than the drear cafe in the drear town of Montmedy, which is quite the most unattractive town we have ever seen in France. (Fortress notwithstanding!!)
