It's the highest point in the entire mountain chain and it feels like it!
The view from the top is stunning and, if you are into hill walking, it is one of the top four, along with the Gola, Monte Sibillia and Lago do Pilato
It's not scary, like Monte Sibillia can be, as it's basically a long uphill trudge along a well managed path. You start at a high pass before the descent into the Piane Grande. There is ample parking and the ascent pass is obvious. Two thirds of the way up there is a well constructed refuge where you can eat your sandwich. There are no toilets, so do not be tempted to use the refuge as such. Even from the refuge, the views are astonishing.
The path gets steeper towards the summit, but do not flag. There is a cross at the top made of reinforced streel joists, bent at a crazy angle. Lightning strikes are to blame. There is a warning sign, in Italian, advising against touching this cross during an electrical storm. As if. At the top, you can look down into Pilot's lake, which makes you think you are on the top of the world.
Some tips:
Take a cagoul or something similar. The weather can change abruptly.
You can get a cellnet signal from the top (weirdly)
Wear shoes with a good tread, as the path is like walking on pool balls. This is especially important on the descent.
Take water and food. Don't forget - no toilets! No bushes!
Return journey, at least 5 hours.
There is a hotel/ bar/ restaurant near the start with good reviews, although this author hasn't tried it.
Go for it! A real highlight.

We actually did this hike in 2015. Uphill and downhill, but not too difficult. Unfortunately, the clouds came in as we reached the top so we did not get the view. The views going up however were spectacular. Good boots with Vibram soles a must, the shale is quite slippery. Sticks help as well.

We are staying at La Casella in Ficulle, Terni and would like to know the driving time to Monte Vettore and Montemoaco. We love to hike / walk in the woods in the mountains. Do you know of other walking areas near our Inn?
