Staff were very accommodating and helpful. Found us someone who could drive us to our next destination as the "good" busses were no longer operational. Pedro was also fantastic shuttling us around n his own vehicle.
We also received a free upgrade upon arrival.

While staying at the D&D Brewery, we took a birdwatching tour out on Lago Yajoa. This lake is gorgeous! Flanked by mountains on all sides, there is no shortage of beautiful scenery! Although there have been other reviewers saying you can't swim in the lake, they are wrong!!! It is perfectly safe! We tubed down the Rio Helado and ended up in the lake, swam to the rock sides and did some cliff jumping into the water. Awesome!!

We're a Canadian couple currently living in Copan Ruinas for two years on a Cuso International volunteer placement. We recently had to travel to the capital, Tegucigalpa, and we made sure to build a three-day stopover in at Lago de Yojoa. I'm a birding enthusiast and the lake is noted as one of the best sites for birders in Honduras (second only to La Tigra, which we also visited while in Tegucigalpa). Using TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet to guide us, we caught the El Mochito bus out of San Pedro Sula and headed to the far side of the lake, which is much quieter than the tourist side you pass on the main road between San Pedro and Tegus. The little hotels near Pena Blanca aren't situated on the lake, but they're an easy walk to the canal, where you can rent a rowboat for the 15- or 20-minute paddle down to the lake.
We booked an early-morning bird tour out of D&D and spent a fabulous four hours on the lake, poking around the marsh at the lake edge. We saw more than 50 different species, including a violacious trogon, snail kites prowling for snails, northern jacanas, whimbrels and all kinds of different herons. Sometimes there are even toucans in the hills above the lake, but this trip we just heard them and didn't get to see them. The bird guide, Malcolm Glasgow, is extremely knowledgeable on local bird types, and has binoculars you can rent for 50 lempiras if you didn't bring any with you. Trust me, you'll want binoculars.
The morning before our bird tour, we had an equally enjoyable time walking the beautiful trails of Los Naranjos National Park, which has some small Lencan ruins, several kilometres of forest trails and a two-kilometre board walk leading out onto the marsh. The park entrance is some distance away from where we stayed, but there's a back entrance marked "Only authorized personnel," where the guards will either let you in if D&D has tickets to sell you (which they didn't), or will let you in without a ticket if you promise to make your way to the visitors' centre inside the park and buy one to show them on your way out. We spent more than three hours roaming through the park, and basically had the place to ourselves. Again, great habitat for birding.
There's a whole other wilderness park near Lago de Yogoa - Cerro Azul, over on the La Guama side. We plan to come back in September, in the rainy season, and visit that park, as different bird species will be there and the landscape apparently changes significantly when the rains come.

It's totally toxic so you can't swim in it, but it is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks for your review! We wanted to respond that we're glad you think the lake is precious. It is indeed. However, your statement that the lake is toxic is incorrect. The lake does have many fish farms and so during the dry season there tends to be a lot of algae. That said, you can still swim in the lake without any problem. We recommend swimming on the north end of the lake, near Pena Blanca/Los Naranjos, or on the west side (Las Marias). Thank you!

Is one of the best places in Honduras. Yo can't come to Honduras without going to the Lake Yojoa. Is a perfect place because of its view, the restaurants and to explore the mountains.

Great destination for a family weekend. Try the fish for lunch, most are raised in floating cages in the lake. There are many things to do in the area. Go to the falls and do the zip lines. The Zoo is a great morning too.

Off the beaten path Lake Yojoa is a paradise. Birding, nature hikes and local culture. We stayed at the D&D Brewery for 4 nights and explored only about half of the great activities around the area.

We were there to eat at a restaurant and bird with Robert Galardo and William Orellana. From the restaurant lakeside deck our group saw Snail Kite, Northern Jacana, Ruddy Crake, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture and many more species on or over the water.
Lake Yojoa is a MUST GO site for birders in Honduras.
