- GauravJ84Pune, India66 contributionsDivine experiencesWe went to Yamnotri in May month which really crowded as temple was closed last 2 years due to COVID. Coming to Trek and temple, this Trek is quite difficult than other treks and uphill task to complete. If you can't walk, you have doli, pony etc available. Start very early 5 am to avoid pony on the route. Once ponty starts, way will be dirty. It will be mesmerizing experience to go on such a divine Trek. You would get needed snack during the Trek. A key improvement I see, there should be proper washroom during the Trek and those were clean very regularly. Temple is very divine and soaks you in religious emotions. It also has a hot water spring where people can tak bath. Temple is clean and usually you get enough time to do the darshan. Spend good 2 hours there. There is lot of scope to improve these heritage and religious site, I could see the government is already trying their best.Visited May 2022Traveled with familyWritten April 14, 2023
- BhaginiChennai (Madras), India109 contributionsYamunotri templeWe stayed at Barkot, started at 6 from Barkot hotel, drove to Yamunotri yatra base. Took us about 1 hour and 30 minutes. We went by pony, they charged ₹2,500 per person. Walking is also possible, but some paths are wet and slippery with the pony dung. Spent about an hour in the temple and the yamuna river behind the mandir. People have spoiled and spoiling throwing clothes, plastics etc. Don't know when people will become sensitive to the environment.....Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2023

The climb to Maa Yamnotri temple is tough to begin with because you are sharing the narrow pathway with other yatris, horses, mules & palkis..
Our entire climb up & down from the temple was riddled with rain which made it a little more difficult & colder than usual. But the best part of the yatra is the gorgeous view and beauty literally everywhere..
The temple is not managed properly though, we were lucky to get darshan as we went during the off season. It was a mess anyways.
Best to start early morning and return by late afternoon, plenty of food available on the way, carry water bottles & avoid using plastic as much as possible. Jai Mata Di.

Yamunotri dham is one of the four chota char dham in the Uttarakhand state. Situated at an altitude of 3200m its about 150km from district headquarters uttarkashi. Buses are available from rishikeah, haridwar and dehradun to Uttarkashi. The last town where one can get accommodation is Janki chatti. From there one have to trek about 7km. Horse, dolly, pitti etc are also available. Trek through the picturesque mountains itself is divine. Up there is a hotspring and kund with hot water where one can take a holy dip before darshan at the temple. Remember, one can go solo to save time and money.

Yamunotri temple belongs to Devi Yamuma, sister of Lord Yamraj. The temple is one of the four dham temples in Uttrakhand. One has to walk 6 kms to reach the hilltop were the temple is situated. The walk is fairly steep. Senior citizens can take a palki or a pony. We took pony for our parents. There is a natural hot water spring at the top were one can take bath before going to the temple. Hygiene level at the pond is alright. Must visit temple.

We went in Nov 2020, started to trek from Jankichatti. Though the kms displayed is 5kms, but in total its a trek of almost 19kms both sides. The view wile trekking is great but in a certain point you will the route, as you hvave to enter the forest and uphill trek. Its better to ask the local for routes, to avoid getting missed.
The temple is good and has hot springs, food availability is not much. But, you can get biscuits and Maggie, chai. We could see snow on the mountains and river alongisde.

Yamunotri is the first of the four dhams and definitely the toughest. Although, its located at a lower elevations than the other dhams, the narrow and crowded pathway make it challenging and tough to reach the temple. The paths actually so narrow that its actually more like a one way path, yet loads of people convey in opposite directions leading to traffic and much delay. There is a choice of either trekking or by going on pony. I would advise a pony while going upwards as it can get cold and exhausting, but while descending the climb is relatively lot easier and can be easily covered on foot. The temple is not a much attractive monument per se, but the godly way in which its perched just on the banks of the Yamuna river makes it much more beautiful. There are proper bathing rooms for people who want to take a bath in the river, which is chilling, hence warm blankets are advised too. Even though its very difficult, the satisfaction that you get after having done the darshan is overwhelming! Amazing place.

We visited Yamunotri on 6th and 7th May 2015. This was the first destination of our Chardham Yatra. We left bangalore by the 7.30 jetairways Dehradun flight, reached Dehradun by 12noon, GMVN Driver Durga Prasad was at the airport. After having lunch in Mussoorie, we drove directly to jankichetti. It was a long, lovely drive via Yamuna bridge, Naugaon, sayanchetti, Hanumanchetti and Poolchetti. We reached by about 8PM. It was very chill.
Our accommodation was booked at GMVN Jankichetty Annex. The rooms were quite decent and clean. There was no hot water in the bathroom but the when we asked for it, the hotel staff gave us hot water. The food was simple and good. The staff were very polite and helpful. GMVN has another Rest House which is near the Yamunotri gate where they have Deluxe rooms.
Next day early morning at 6AM we left for Yamunotri trek. There are ponies and dandies available at the Yamunotri gate. But we preferred trekking. The 5Km trek is a steep and continuous climb, where at times the route passes through hard rocks just wide enough for two horses to pass. Though the trek is rough and rugged, it is nevertheless a richly rewarding experience. On the way there are small shops selling tea, nimbu pani etc. We reached on top by about 9.30AM.
A bath in the hot spring(Yamunabai kund) refreshed us and the view of gushing yamuna is too good. The places to see are the Surya kund, Surya Temple, Divya Shila and Yamunaji Temple. There are number of eateries selling hot hot samosas, jelibis, parotas etc.
After spending some time in Yamunotri, we started back by 12 and reached the Hotel by about 2.30PM. Good lunch was awaiting us and then we left for Uttarkashi.

Yamunotri, situated in the Uttarkashi District of Uttrakhand, is a place of a different kind. If you fall in the age group of 15-40 years, this is a place to walk/ trek through. The temple is about 7 kilometers from the place called JanakiChatti. Though you have multiple options to head to the temple; Trek, Horse ride & Doli. It is worth walking through the path listening to the faint sounds of the nature admist the breath taking view of the Yamuna river, melting down through the glacier & reaching down the hills, kissing all that she passes through. Shrine isn't visible until you are about 700 mts close to the place. The trek on an Average day to an Average human like me, took 3 hours to climb through 7 kms & once you get there, the feeling you get is just amazing. You might be just lucky to witness the best of all. I experienced, sun, Snow & the rains at the same time. A feelling like that, can give you an opportunity to experience the New you!

Today the 10th June,2017. We reached Janki Chatti, the base camp for Yamunotri temple, one of the Char Dhams last afternoon accompanied by rain . The motor road ends here . Now we are to trek 6km to reach the temple by two horses . At 6.05am we started our journey . The road though made of stone slab, fitted with railing guard from falling into the deep ditch. The river Yamuna is flowing much below.Janki Chatti is at 2575mt asl but the temple of Yamunotri is at 3293 mt asl. The road is gradually on an ascent. After trekking a few meter, we had to take "gate pass" for Rs.100/ per horse, the entry tax payable to the Local Govt. As it was very early, the road was more or less empty, we did not face any hurdles except halt for drinking the horses & rest .Yesterday it rained heavily, the road got muddy. There were lots of shops with mineral, soft drinks, teas , snacks etc in interval. We passed many yatries walking on foot with a stick. Now I can say that it is the trek of much fitness, physical ability, no heart problem, a lot of will power & courage & obviously there is something latent that will reach you to the destination after much hardship. Thus we reached in almost two hours to the long cherished Yamunotri Dham, The temple is dedicated to goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama, the god of death & the daughter of the the Sun God. This is an ancient Hindu temple , built by the king of Tehri Garhwal in 1839, destroyed by an earthquake. However it was built again by the Maharani of Jaipur which was destroyed in 1923 & rebuilt in 1982.
This shrine opens after the Akshya Tritiya, say at the end of April & closes on the 2nd day [ Yama Dwitiya] of Diwali festival.Yamunotri , the source of Yamuna river but the actual source is the Champasar glacier on the Kalindi Mountain at a height of 4421mt asl, 1km uphill strenuous trek.
The idol of Yamuna is made of black marble & a white stone idol of Goddess Ganga is seated beside her. However, all the puja offerings are made on a silver deity of Goddess Yamuna, a replica of the original deity. This idol is being worshiped during the winter months in the village Kharsali, 1km from Janki Chatti. The temple remains abandoned under the blanket of snow that reopens in April end/ May first week. All the priests left for home at Kharsali . As we reached one priest guided us & we made our puja first at Divya Shila at Surya Kund . It is the custom here . We offered our rice & a potato for Prasadam to a priest for cooking in the boiling water [ 88 degree celcius] of Surya Kund. However, every pilgrim should take a bath at Gauri Kund [ less hot ] first, followed by puja at Divya Shila[ The Divine Stone ] & to reach the gate for darshan of Goddess Yamuna.Today we were the first to perform our puja as we reached there before any other yatri.
It is a very small place with high mountain with offshoots all around. Just standing on the temple gate we gazed at the snow clad peaks gleaming with the sun rays. The weather was very pleasant today. The chief attraction is the temple plus the magnificent track along the river bank from Janki Chatti and a panorama of mountains with snow caps. After puja is over, we took some snacks in a nearby food corner and again started for return but it was very difficult to get down on a slope plus the crowd of yatries on foot, in kandi, in dandi, in palki, up & down resulting a chaos. However, we returned safe at Janki Chatti. we took our lunch & headed for Uttarkasi for our next destination at Gangotri.

From Hanuman Cotti to Janokicotti 8km and from there 7km up trekking . There are three ways of visiting Yamonitri . By horse ,trekking or on doli.Whether you can trekk or not it depends on your fitness and determination . I saw 75 years old lady trekking . By the way why to trekk from Hanuman cotti. This is a old route. Now upto Janoki Cotti you can come by vehicle.

February will very cold, though the April, may will be ideal but crowded due to school college vacations.
Mid March will be very good as exams of children will be on and less crowded. If you can sustain the hard winter then little later June will also will be good.

The route to Gangotri is rather unsafe during rains because of landslides and streams flowing past the roads. I suggest you travel in October or November, take busy road n better to travel with more members. Happy Traveling!
