Till I visited Bishnupur, I was not aware that such beautiful temples are available in our own West Bengal. Believe me the temples are really beautiful but it needs to protected and maintained. The maintenance is really poor. Another issue is that the lanes and by lanes of Bishnupur is very narrow and crowded as such not fit for moving with an car. It is advisable to park your own car in a open space and than hire a TOTO rikshaw to visit all the temples.

Built by Bir Hambir in the 16th century, this beautiful terracotta temple pyramidal roof and small roof domes and arches on the outer faces. Radha Krishna idols would be brought here and worshipped during Ras festival until 1932. there is a common ticket for all major attractions in the town. Do keep in mind the fact that approach roads are narrow and parking difficult to find

A good weekend retreat. Can be covered in a day trip from Kolkata. Parking is a concern. I liked the new online ticketing system, though. Patrons need to maintain the decorum of the place.

Very well maintained architecture with three type big domes. The garden is nice.
Although not much terracotta work is remaining on the architecture. The different types of domes are something to look at.

The history of Rasmancha is there all over the internet, and hence like many reviewers here,am not going into those details.
One can say that this is the Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty of Bishnupur !! It is iconic.Period
The oldest terracotta structure situated almost at the center of town has withstood the test of time. The structure itself is well preserved and looked after by Archaeological Society of India.
One has to procure tickets and then go near it. There are local guides available, the oldest among them (Mr A Banerjee) is the most knowledgeable as well as courteous, and charge very less. From him, get to know about the history of the structure.
Start your Bishnupur temple city tour from here, and you wont be disappointed.
Check out my accompanying pictures, and feel free to ask me anything.I have been there last weekend, with my family comprising aged parents as well as young kids.
Few points I want to add - There was lighting of the place and it was a spectacular sight at night. Unfortunately upkeep is poor, and although we were told there would be lighting of the structure at night,we found that it is closed after 5pm,and there is no light these days. The roads to visit the place are narrow, and it is best to get hold of a battery operated buggy, locally called "Toto",which doesn't charge a lot

Bishnupur is a town in Bankura District in the state of West Bengal, India. It is famous for its terracotta temples. For almost a thousand years it was the capital of the Malla kings of Mallabhum. Most of the exquisite terracotta temples for which town is justly famous were built during the rule of Malla Kings.
The temple was built in 1600 A.D and is famous for its pyramidal superstructure. The temple are decorative and are narrative of a number of economic, social and religious themes. The temple has a very high aesthetic appeal through its fine.
The temple site is well maintained by Archaeological survey of India. The entry ticket is worth INR 10 for Indian tourists and INR 100 for foreign tourists and needs to be bought at Rasmancha temple.

Very well maintained medieval structure, and one gets a glimpse of the history of the place three centuries ago. The artisans of the time tried to depict the social, religious and mythological beliefs of the times in the clay tiles that they produced to build the walls of the temple.

We started our Bishnupur tour from this place because this is where the ASI ticket counter is located. The ticket is valid at all temples in Bishnupur area. This place is bang in the middle of the Bishnupur town, surrounded by houses and busy shops. The roads are narrow everywhere in Bishnupur and it takes time to go around, plan accordingly.
Rasmancha (or Raas-mancha) is not a temple, it's supposed to be the place where the Krishna idols from all around Bishnupur used to congregate once a year to celebrate Raas. It's a grand structure made out of terracotta bricks and reliefs, surrounded by a well-maintained garden. The walls are adorned with beautiful carvings and statues, but they are not as intricate or complex as other temples in Bishnupur. It feels nice walkign through the colonnades of the building looking at the beautiful terracotta work.
