And all in one package deal of a destination! Wine tasting, gin, chocolate, pizza & fun for the whole gang ....Spice Route has it all. Thank you to Sune & her team for an unforgettable experience here. The wine was fantastic & the charcuterie board was a great addition. Duane from the distillery was a ball of fun :D I also love the kids area which has been an addition to the estate. A very family-friendly place.

Fourth visit here, grand location, lots to see and experience...
Our fourth visit, the first being in 2014 and the previous to this was 2018 and there have been a few changes for sure. The deli has now moved up to the main area, extensive goodies to explore and purchase and a delightful young women to inform us of all the changes. The chocolate Tasting was due to open soon(change of brand), the wine and beer tasting open but we thoroughly enjoyed the tea tasting. This unique experience was unexpected by well conducted by informative staff and from the giant tea wheel we purchased our favourite's. It's a shame the art gallery has gone, restaurants has changed hands but Spice route still remains one of the places to visit and for all the family. Grand views, easy to find, safe and plenty of parking.

An interesting quiet place in a beautiful setting.
We went off season and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. There are many interesting tastefully decorated shops. Tastings offered of locally made goods, including wine, beer, tea and chocolate. The restaurant's food is good and served either in a cosy comfortable setting inside or outside under huge oak trees. The views are magnificent. The facilities clean and well maintained.

Skip the Shop lol 😆, do the single Origin Tasting.
"The Chocolate Room" We had the best presenter "Choc Norris", he was succinct, detailed, hilarious and knew a lot about chocolate. And it's worth your money. He nailed it when he says Tanzania Origin is bitter and strong just like your Mother in-law... He's mother In-law is like Milk chocolate smoot and sweet. Send that man to Ghana please!! He explains everything so well from bean to bar. This is a must do on Spice Route. Next time I will definitely eat my chocolate with respect. All the best for you Choc Norris.

Three of us headed early out to Paarl to experience the Spice Route journey, and had an enjoyable day spent under the trees. The heritage of Spice Route Destination goes back to the historical mariners who used to trade Eastern spices to Europe along the “Spice Route” for the spice trade in the 15th century. So what is this Spice Route passport all about? It's an invitation to navigate through a world of artisans, flavours and experiences here in the heart of the Paarl Winelands. Each vendor is within comfortable walking distance from each other, and the beauty of it is that you determine your own journey of discovery. The artisans that we visited to name just a few: ~ The Chocolate Room by Beyers. ~ Wilderer Distillery for a tasting of their spirits. ~ CBC Cape Brewing Co for some premium craft beers. ~ A wine tasting at the Spice Route Tasting Room. ~ Jewells for a selection of traditional charcuterie. ~ Brenda's Preserves to do some spice shopping. Time-wise: It says to allow yourself at least 2 hours to savour the 5 artisanal tastings, but we found that it is better to do one or two at a time and really soak up each experience. There's plenty of time and opportunity to return for each. Top tip: Paarl in the Summer is a warm destination. Dress comfortably, bring a hat if possible and wear that sunscreen.

    Perfect Sunday Morning
It was my first time here although the friends who I went with have been before. They mentioned several changes, but it sounds for the better! I loved the shop with all the Brenda home made products. I also didn't find the prices touristy at all! The tea shop was a dream! I had no idea Nigiro tea had a location here and I lingered quite a while in that section. We did the chocolate tasting at Beyers and then the beer tasting next door. Then, of course, it was time to eat! You should really make a reservation ahead of time. Although there were about 30 open tables reserved for at least an hour later, they wouldn't give us a table. Eventually, they settled on a bench table under a tree. I don't know how practical it is to show away 8 hungry people while you have 30+ tables open for at least another hour? All in all, the Spice Route gets a thumbs up from me.

Great setting... One of my favourite spots but today was a disappointment.

But today (Sunday, 28 Feb 2021), Barley and Biltong was a let down. Had some friends from abroad visiting and the idea was to treat them to some of my favourite spots - Spice Route being one of them.

Being in the hospitality industry, it's difficult not to notice things.

1. We waited 13mins for a menu.

2. We ordered drinks and they came relatively quickly, given the restaurant was packed. Then we ordered food, which took 42mins to arrive (but I can understand the waiting time, as the restaurant was full and I think the waiters were just overwhelmed. Mind you, the Manager just stood in the doorway, offering no help, not touching tables, not reassuring guests who were waiting long for orders.

3. When our food arrived, we had no cutlery on the table.

4. We ordered more drinks when our food arrived, but they came long after we finished our meals - we had to ask three different waiters to assist with getting our drinks.

5. I ordered the ribs, they were Pick 'n Pay Escort Ribs or a variant thereof. I know this because I have those ribs maybe once, sometimes twice a month.

6. We asked for the bill and when I paid, I left a tip (even after the disappointing service) and Sive, our waitress, didn't offer so much as a 'thank you'.

7. When I took all this to the manager (who was still standing in the doorway) as we exited, he looked at me and offered nothing. Not an apology, just an "Oh", but a dismissive one at that and when I enquired about this ribs, he couldn't give me an answer. Then as I walked away, I must've been maybe two or two and a half metres away, I heard him say "Sorry!" That's it!

We have just had a phenomenal tasting and could not leave a tip for the amazing staff member who taught us about your wines because of company policy tips only in cash.

The amount of people that carry cash around is minimal and I think it’s so poor that you do not allow tips for your staff when customers pay by card.

Especially in South Africa’s economy how could you deny staff who perform well extra income?

Shame on you!

Great service but pizzas were horrible. Not enough cheese and toppings, bland and fall apart crumbly thin base. For such a huge tourist attraction and pizza being the most served food item (as observed) you really need to up your game.

Came here as a half day excursion, part of a conference itinerary. Nice scenery and we went to buy chocolates and ice cream at De Villiers. The chocolates are also found at Pick and Pay supermarket. Wanted to try the wine and cured meat platter but we were too late for the last order at 4.30pm. Bus took us down to a spice shop at the foot of the estate where the smell was heavenly. Got a bottle of fig jam and honey.

On a rainy day we headed to Spice Route. Quick trip to buy chocolate from de Villiers then onto the wine tasting. We went for the tasting with charcuterie selection. Not been a huge fan of Spice Route before, couple of bottles back in the UK which I haven't enjoyed. What a difference. Fantastic. Each wine perfectly paired with the most amazing dried meats. Definitely a place to go back to time after time.

There is so much to do, experience and taste at Spice Route. An excellent place to spend a couple of hours to ensure that you have enough time to sample all it's delicacies. The surrounding beauty is definitely an added bonus.
