From it's Slovenian source and along the battlefields of World War I (please read Ernest Hemingway, "A farewell to Paradise"), the Isonzo river reaches it's estuary into the Adriatic Sea. Between it's main river bed and the Canale Quarantia (slightly East of the main river), there is a narrow peninsula called Isola della Cona. Here, the Italian organization of National Parks has reshaped an old farmhouse to serve as a visitor's center, whilst a nearby building has a café and spaces where educational courses can be given. The visitor's center serves as a starting point for a walk around an artificial lake, where nowadays many birds breed, and you truly can see how nature finds it's way back to... nature. On top of that, several horses also live in the area; during summer season, you may book a ride on them.

Enjoyable natural reserve. The different pathways aren't marked well so before you just start walking (like we did) make sure you know where exactly you want to go. There is a small (very small) round and a larger one. I would definitely do the large one if you want to go a bit off the beaten track. You'll get some amazing views and unspoiled nature there. Go early - in summer in can get very hot and its not shady. The small round to the bird watching centre is really just a few metres (5-10 min. walk). Pay attention to the small stream to your right hand, you'll probably see some turtles (they are really well disguised). When you've reached the little hut go downstairs you might be able to see a beaver.

If you are looking for a peaceful place to enjoy a few hours viewing beautiful wetlands full of exotic birds, giant water rats, wild horses and other animals then this is a must visit. There are many viewing points to take great photos or just enjoy the view, If you enjoy a good walk there are 2 good walking trails that range from a 30 minute to a 90 minute walk at a casual pace. There is a good place to eat and drink with local italian cuisine at reasonable prices.

I spent a day there with my friends and our dogs and it was a very well spent one. Like already someone else said it’s like Camargue in France, with those wild horses, birds and paths. I recommend good walking shoes or boots at some parts it can be pretty muddy. The place is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, but is a paradise for ornithologists and photographers. You can make the small tour, about 4 km or the longer one, about 7km (or both, but have some water with you). The staff is very helpful and they speak English. If you have a dog with you, have it on the leash. The entrance fee is 5 EUR for adults, for children aged 6-12 and seniors 65+ it’s 3,5 EUR.

While searching for a path that would lead down to the amazing Isonzo River, I came across this beautiful area filled with an extraordinary range of flora as well as various species of birds. Having only spent less than an hour in such a very beautiful and vast place, my suggestion is for visitors to spend at least two hours and perhaps even more to truly appreciate this wonderful gem in the very underrated city of Gorizia.

The Isonzo Rivermouth Nature Reserve (in Italian Foce dell'Isonzo) is located in the eastern part of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia along the lower 15 km of the course of the river and covers an area of 2.338 hectares.

The wetlands of the North Adriatic were created over the last 20.000 years as the sea level rose and dropped again, the sea water gradually flooded flat land along the sea. These processes are still at work today, also the rivers deposit sediments that helped build the stretch of sandy beaches marking the outer limit of the existing North Adriatic lagoon areas.

The best starting point to visit the reserve is Isola della Cona, a 50 hectare restored freshwater marsh. There is an attractive visitor centre with a small museum. The visitors can proceed along the nature trail winding up to the mouth of the Isonzo River. Several bird hides have been put up which provide great views.

The North-East Adriatic wetlands are a paradise for ornithologists and bird watchers. Over 400 species have been sighted here, which is a large number compared with just over 550 bird species to be found in Europe.

The number of species observed is particularly high in the month of April (180 recorded so far), while the number of "non-passerine" birds can exceed 50.000 in the month of November.

The reserve is home to small herds of Camargue horses, which are in summer joined in grazing by cattle.

And here we are in this natural reserve which was indicated to us by an employee of the Spa at the Laguna Palace hotel in Grado. Thanks for the great advice!!! We immediately went looking on the internet attracted by the idea of being able to see white Camargue horses in the wild. Given the short distance from our hotel we went to the reserve. There are two routes available, the first is a circular route lasting about an hour on which there are observatories and observation points for bird watching. There is then a second, longer route, lasting about three hours, which leads to the mouth of the Isonzo river. Having completed the first tour after having lingered longer at the Marinetta Observatory which allowed us to observe mallards, swans, herons and other birds, we were a little disappointed... Not even a horse and the bad weather was approaching. We started the second route and suddenly some white spots emerged from the green of the bush towards Punta Barena. We approached slowly and there they were... beautiful white horses feeding freely near the swamp. From that moment on we saw horses everywhere, even near the entrance where these splendid animals live in the wild, free and in a herd. It's a shame that it then started to rain... we would have happily stayed to observe the avifauna present which consists of over three hundred species of wintering and stationary migratory birds, even if, not being experts, we find it very difficult to recognize the different species. Worth the visit.
